Amazon.co.uk Review The impact of Marilyn Manson's subversive musical agenda has waned, and what's left is a provocative, talented artist writing affecting, powerful and, yes, controversial songs. Although IHoly Wood/I is the third title of a trilogy that began with 1996's IAntichrist Superstar/I, this is an album that stands on its own. Rife with references to the Beatles and the Dead Kennedys, and full of pop-culture barbs, IHoly Wood/I is a musically diverse and powerful statement. The memorable sing-along "Disposable Teens" boasts the same kind of staccato, Teutonic, fist-thrusting power introduced with "Beautiful People", while "Fight Song" sounds like the Sex Pistols meets Blur by way of Nirvana. While a futuristic, nihilistic tint pervades Manson's work, passion is also prevalent, notably in the spooky acoustic number "A Place in the Dirt" and the brutal "Death Song". Like Marilyn Manson the man, IHoly Wood/I is intelligent, dynamic and multifaceted, with myriad charms that are evident to the tuned-in listener. --IKatherine Turman/I

About the album May 7, 2005 Horatio (UK) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
Here is a bit more background information about the album, that I didn't include in my previous review (Great - but not his best).pHere's a bit of background to the album: After the Columbine killings, Manson was blamed for the killings (although it was later found the kids who did the shooting hated Manson and his music), Manson's Rock is Dead tour (Mechanical Animals) was cut short, and Manson, fearing for his life, fled to his home where he had to spend 3 (count em!) whole months hiding in his attic from the public. He spend the months ferociously writing song after song for the album 'Holy Wood', very embittered. Manson wrote an article about the Columbine Killings for Rolling Stone magazine, which you find if you look around a bit.brThe album is mainly about society, especially American society, and how the media glamorises deaths. Manson has moved on from his personas of the Antichrist Superstar and the androgynous alien rockstar Omega, and is now (though less obvious) Adam Kadmon, the original human (from Jewish mysticism). Manson said: "It was sort of pointing out that circle that religion is the origin of entertainment, and I was trying to show that I could relate my life to characters in history like Christ or Kennedy or John Lennon and how people are often martyred for being misunderstood".brhttp://www.resnet.trinity.edu/ddamon/hierophant/index.htm says "The album itself is a product of Hebrew Kabala, celebrities and serial killers, biblical scripture, freemasonry, history, and bizarre internet resources. He draws on the Tarot cards, much as he does front page news, to produce his most brilliant work". The site is great for analysing MM and his works. A moderately detailed analysis of Holy Wood and of the other albums can also be found at http://www.marilynmansonimages.com/band-history6.html brThere is no doubt about it, spend long enough analysing the lyrics, and you will see that Manson put a huge amount of depth into this album.
Absolutely breathtaking. June 24, 2004 Ross D. Lovie (UK) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Simply, without a big long spiel, this album is quite possibly one of the most stunning rock albums ever to grace the earth. Holy Wood is 20 tracks of music that is so wonderfully intense that it leaves you baying for more.brFans of Marilyn Manson and anyone who has ever felt disaffected or dismayed with the state of the world should sit down and play this album with the volume as high as it can possibly go because it is quite literally a big middle finger on a CD in musical incarnation.brThere is nothing on this album that Manson doesn't cover; gun-culture (namely the blistering attack on it in the powerful 'The Love Song'), obcession with celebrity, assassination (Kennedy, Lennon, etc.)brSome of his most powerful work to date can be found on this album, especially with regard to the anthemic 'Disposable Teens', a fist hammering industrial ballad devoted to the disposessed and unwanted.brNot all of the album is heavy and there are also some really beautiful tracks in which the melancholy and possibly even the hurt of Marilyn Manson himself seem to shine quietly through the lyrics (mind you, having just been blamed for the Columbine massacre, who wouldn't be upset?) An excellent, haunting example of this would be the powerful 'In The Shadow Of The Valley Of Death'brMusically diverse and with a huge number of obvious and more subtle facets, this album is everything that a Marilyn Manson fan could ask for and stands out as a powerful statement against the throw-away and often cruel society in which we live. With tracks like 'Disposable Teens', 'The Nobodies', 'President Dead' and many others, I would think it fair to say that this is quite possibly the most powerful Marilyn Manson album released to date and will certainly take some effort to beat.brMarilyn Manson, the essence of the message summed up on one CD. If you haven't already, you REALLY need to buy this album. Powerful, bold...you certainly wont be disappointed.
Manson Comes Out Fighting: November 21, 2000 mattm@mattmaher.demon.co.uk (Bristol, UK) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
After taking the moral-majority's blame for the Columbine Highschool Massacre - Mr Manson has come out fighting.pI can't stop listening to this album. I'm a big Manson fan and own all their albums, but lyrically I think this is the best yet. The lyrics are powerful and hard hitting, and amazingly it's the most rebellious album Marilyn Manson have ever released.pThis album is more similar to 'Antichrist Superstar' than the last album, 'Mechanical Animals', and this is a good thing.pThe album dives in and tackles issues such as religion and being an outsider, issues which so many of us can identify with today. All in all it's a 'pissed-off' album and that is exactly where Manson should be. The guy is extremely intelligent and he has more to say in this record than most artists say in a career.pThe first half of the album is instantly likeable, the second half grows on you until it becomes just as likeable. 'The Fight Song' , 'Coma Black' , 'Burning Flag' , 'The Love Song' and 'Target Audience' are all superb tracks with excellent lyrics.pBut most of all - Manson is now being played on daytime Radio 1. This is a GOOD THING. The more people who hear this mans music, the better.
'cut the head off...grows back hard' January 27, 2001 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The god of **** comes back with a renewed purpose on this album after the more mellow mechanical animals...... manson turns in yet another cd of blinding material ranging from the sublimly reflective (a place in the dirt , in the shadow...) to the venomous spitting anthems of old (fight song , death song )plus some more experimental stuff (cruci-fiction in space ,count to six and die).Manson is clearly shaping up to become a song writing genius alongside dylan and lennon but the narrow-minded and ignorant stil fail to see past his image and anti-religion views and ultimately miss out on one of the most gifted musicians who has come along in a long time.Holy wood is a natural progression for manson who just seem to be getting stronger and stronger and his song writing seems to improve with every record.Where manson moves next musically we dont know but you can bet whatever he does will be intelligent, inspired and incredible.
Subversion at its most comically subversive September 15, 2001 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've browsed through the other reviews, including one which said that Marilyn Manson was a poor lyricist. I can't see that. Manson is obviously a very clever writer. He can't be taken too seriously, but we can see where he is coming from when he says I never hated the one true God, but the God of the people I hated. He's attacking everything he feels is wrong, everything that gives him grief and pain. 'Holy Wood' is the first Marilyn Manson album I've listened to, and it is a fantastic one. Never mind the lyrics and the vocals, you've got a good heavy metal band supporting Marilyn Manson, and this combination means that he can win such awards as Kerrang!'s best album without any dispute. This is one of the albums of the year, but please remember that Marilyn Manson wouldn't really perform acts he talks about, on much the same line as Eminem. It's a scare album for parents, but one kids can listen to, rebel to, and not go too far.
