Amazon.co.uk Review
IWingspan/I could be the collection that finally gives Wings the respect that they've long been due. Some people are wary of Wings simply because knocking them is the done thing. Others are dubious because they've actually tried listening to ILondon Town/I or IRed Rose Speedway/I all the way through. It's a truism that without a vociferous writing partner, Paul McCartney's sense of quality control could be rather lax, but it's easy to overlook how many fine tracks he and Wings produced from 1970 to 1983, the period covered on IWingspan/I. Compiling 40 of them on a two-CD set is a smart move--it allows you to purchase pretty much every post-Beatles McCartney song you could ever possibly want, all at once. The hits crowd together on the first disc, while the second cherry-picks album tracks and oddities; forget the inevitable "Mull of Kintyre", let "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Waterfalls" and "Back Seat of My Car" remind you of just what Paul McCartney could always do when he tried. I--Taylor Parkes/I

As I'm a teenager whose (almost) 50-year-old Dad owns almost all the Beatles LPs, it's very hard to think of Paul McCarteny as someone who 'rocks.' But I love the man - he's quite clearly a songwriting genius, without doubt the best singer-songwriter ever, and he proves with this album that Wings have produced songs of Beatles standard. Although they often take some getting used to, almost every track is a gem, with songs like 'Venus and Mars/Rockstar,' 'Helen Wheels' and 'Daytime Nighttime Suffering' being included on the 'History' CD (ie not Hits... how?). Personally, Paul is my favourite Beatle, so it was no surprise to discover that Wingspan, although more 'pop-like,' can match up to many of the Beatles' songs. I could list all the great songs, but it's far easier to name the bad ones - Lovely Linda and Tug Of War. Because I don't mind Mull of Kintyre.

So much talk over the years about Wings not being as good as you know who blah blah blah.. However if you like the Fabs(and who doesn't) then Wings are the next best thing. This is SO much better than it was given credit for in the 70s.Songs such as Uncle Albert have that quirky middle section Macca loved in Day in the Life You never give me your money. Sure Mull of K is cheesy (and a nightmare to dance to if my memory serves)but it has a certain style with some 'power' bagpipes. Songs such as Maybe I'm Amazed,Band o.t.Run and Jet beat a great deal of the stuff from the White Album, but that's my view. Good to have them all on one CD more comprehensive than the earlier Wings greatest hits. One final point on the musically-maligned Linda: I can't hear one note out of tune. Go on buy it, you know you want to.

okay, it's all about lennon v mccartney , who's better? well in my view lennon was the best in the beatles but mccartney has had the better solo songs by far.True Lennon died in 1980, meaning Mccartney has had more time to amass a huge amount of classics and he has as shown here.Disc 1 is full of superb songs - goodnite tonite, let em in,band on the run,jet etc. Disc 2 is more album tracks and quite unsuccessful singles. But it also rules - it has maybe amazed, the amazingly catchy take it away and the superb tomorrow, amongst many others. This is a must for any Mccartney fan, unless you want to get all of his albums, which you might as well cos u can pick them up on the cheap and hardly disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars A Grand Collection!   December 16, 2002

For those who had slightly written McCartney off for a few of his sillier 'pop' hits, one might want to take a listen to what may be his swan song collection. The big hits are here wether you like them or not, but the real treasures are packed in like his first great solo hit, "Another Day". p"Give Ireland Back To The Irish" was originally included in the first pressing, but deleted later due to a request from the friggin' Queen. Paul was knighted by her - so out of respect? Too bad.pDisc One sticks to the Top 40. Disc Two is a great surprise, giving up great songs album cuts like, "Heart Of The Country", "Back Seat Of My Car", "Too Many People" and the sultry, "Let Me Roll It". McCartney even publicly trashed his old ditty "Bip Bop", but it stands as a reminder to his simple craftsmanship. That of one half of the greatest songwriting team in history.

5 out of 5 stars Strange Compilation - Great Songs   May 28, 2008

A very strange compilation indeed; some but not all the greatest hits, some but still missing vital b-sides and album tracks and topping it all, this compilation includes Macca material both before the formation of Wings and solo material 2-3 years after he disbanded the group. Macca also had a TV program regarding his years with Wings around the release of this project. My guess is that all this was more a thinly disguised tribute to the late Linda rather than a Wings compilation. br / br /Being obviously incomplete in these aspects, this its still a very enjoyable album. Most of the hits are to be found here and many album tracks justify being given a second spin. The sound has been remastered and one can clearly hear the difference compared to some earlier CD pressings. Viewing this as a complete compilation and this is clearly a disaster; with an approach of a sampler and this is a great buy. Macca made great songs and a few fantastic records. He, however, also released music which should have been put aside, no such duds are to be found on this set.
