Amazon.co.uk Review Widely credited with being the band who kicked off (and merged) the two sub-genres of punk-pop and geek rock, IThe Green Album/I is Weezer's attempt to wrestle back their crown from the upstart likes of Blink 182 and Wheatus. IThe Green Album/I, recorded nearly five years after their previous album, the widely ignored (but wholly excellent) IPinkerton/I, sees the band reunited with former Cars frontman Rik Ocasek, who produced their multi-platinum debut way back in 1994. The result is an album of catchy pop gems, more accessible than IPinkerton/I, and with a quicker pace and more sonic depth than IWeezer/I. Though the high-pitched harmonies of former bassist Matt Sharp are missed (he left to focus on his own band, the Rentals), lead singer/songwriter Rivers Cuomo still has a way with an infectious hook and a sing-along chorus, especially on "Don't Let Go", "Photograph" and "Knockdown Drag Out". The album's first single, "Hash Pipe", kicks off with a bass-heavy, 70s-sounding metal riff, while "Island in the Sun" is as summery as its title suggests. At just over 30-minutes long, IThe Green Album/I may leave some listeners feeling a little cheated, but overall, this is a gem of an album, small yet perfectly formed. It is also a worthy return for a band whose influence is undeniable, if under appreciated. I--Robert Burrow/I

Fantastic! I haven't bought an album this good for months!! July 12, 2001 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This being the only album by Weezer that I have heard, I have nothing to compare it to - but I think it really is amazing. It's a feelgood album with some fantastic songs, including the single Hash Pipe which has you nodding along to your walkman looking like a complete fool! Photograph, Crab and Knock-down Drag-out would all also make brilliant singles. Weezer are a great rock-band with their own definitive character, but (I know this sounds strange...) many of their songs are much like the Beatles' - the simple, catchy tunes and lovely harmonies in Island in the Sun and Smile are very similar to songs by the Fab Four. All in all, this is a great album without a single disappointment on it - BUY IT NOW!!!
They're back, and they are, of course, still brilliant May 14, 2001 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
If you're a weezer fan, you'll love this album. In fact, if you're a weezer fan, you've probably already heard it. But it *is* fantastic. It's on familiar ground - well, familiar as far as the Blue Album goes, anyway, and is a perfect example of what you'd describe as the Weezer sound. I would pick a standout track, but it's too hard! Photograph, Island In The Sun and Simple Pages are all wonderful, Hash Pipe is probably the heaviest thing they've done bar Pinkerton's Getchoo, O Girlfriend is nice and heartfelt, and Glorious Day is, as the title suggests, an upbeat, us vs the world kind of song. And upbeat is what sums up this album. This is a band who've lost a key member, had a crisis of self-confidence, been on the verge of splitting up (if you can, read the infamous 1997 Alternative Press article The Unravelling Of Weezer to see how close they came), yet have come through all that and are just really happy to still be making records. And making bloody fantastic ones at that. Though a little short at just over half an hour (though at least UK listeners get an extra track, I Do), what you get here is eleven perfect pop-punk gems. It's happy, it's upbeat, and more importantly, it's brilliant.
a small piece of musical genius July 9, 2001 adwhiting@btinternet.com (Nottingham, England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
ok, now people reading this fall into one of three categories.... p[1] you are a weezer fan and have heard their other albums [2] you are not a weezer fan and have heard nothing by this band [3] you have heard some weezer i.e. Buddy Holly or Hash Pipepif you fall under the first categorie then no doubt you have this album, if not then get it and i guarantee that Rivers Cuomo and company will once again rock your world.pif you fall under categorie two then Weezer are a FANTASTIC band, their subtle mix of pop-punk and geek rock put them up their with the genre creating likes of nirvana, the ramones and darest i say it... tool. the lyrics are witty, well thought out and meaningful, and they are one of the most easily accessible bands you are likely to hear. if you don't believe me then try and get hold of songs like susanne or buddy holly and hear what i am on about.pthose of you falling into categorie number three should definately get this album because if you have heard and likes any of their more commercially successful songs then you WILL love this album and the previous ones aswell.pBasically, this album merely confirms Weezers status as one of the greates bands of their time, not trying to be anybody but themselves and being extremely successful in doing so...
It makes me feel so fine I can't control my brain September 17, 2001 knowledeayton (Hereford, England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Green Album is a marvellous illustration that, sometimes, less is definitely more.
br /
br /Whereas power-pop contemporaries of theirs such as, say, Ash have a tendency to pad out otherwise excellent albums with filler (trim three or four songs off Free All Angels, for example, and you're left with a five-star product), Weezer favour quality over content. Although it clocks in at only just over the half-hour mark, from beginning to end every song is perfectly, joyously, infectiously crafted and, come the end, you aren't left feeling cheated...just press play and go round again...
br /
br /Their five year hiatus has enabled Weezer to collate a mightily impressive array of songs. You might, perhaps, think you're a cynical type, but one listen to The Green Album might just provoke you into reviewing your definition of 'value for money'...
The Best Album Since The Mid-90s...Ever! January 22, 2002 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Better than Pinkerton (and nowhere near as pretentious), even better than thebrBlue Album, and better than anything in years. Apparently it 'rocks' as well. brIf the only song you've heard is Hash Pipe, don't be deceived into thinking that's what to expect from the rest of the album, because that's definitely the most straightforward 'rock' song on the album.pIf Brian Wilson and that guy from the Knack had a child together, that biological miracle would probably come up with something like this album. Catchy as hell, and despite the fact that it's only 28 minutes long you don't really notice its brevity. And you WILL sing along to all of it, sooner or later.pMy favourite songs are Photograph, Island In The Sun, Knock-Down Drag-Out, Smile, and O Girlfriend, but the rest are pretty much faultless. That's possibly because it's not the most ambitious album (but they tried 'different' with Pinkerton and look at the pig's ear they made of that) but when the songs are this poppy and catchy you don't need anything else.pPhotograph reminds me of Phil Spector songs with a bit of the Beach Boys mixed in; Island In The Sun is the main reason I bought this album, and is probably the high-point of Rivers Cuomo's songwriting career (the single is also well worth a look, for the b-side Always); Knock-Down Drag-Out is the only song that is noticeably too short, but it's still great, loud, distorted pop; Smile is the slowest song on the album and provides a change of pace and is LOVELY; and O Girlfriend is one of the more delicate, melodic songs and wraps the album up brilliantly. pI love the rest of the songs as well. Some of the songs are more obviously singles (Island In The Sun, O Girlfriend, Hash Pipe) but I really don't think there's any filler on here. Though if I had to pick out songs that I could live without, I'd say Crab and Simple Pages, but I only very very rarely skip those tracks.pIf like me you love the Lemonheads (especially the poppier moments from Lovey) you'll probably like this album a lot. The Green Album is like the Lemonheads, only not as country-fied or as laid-back. And not quite as good, but then again, what is?pIt's good to know someone out there is still writing good, loud, melodic, catchy, guitar pop songs....
