this album is 16 tracks of amazing beats. there is a song for every type of mood you are in. If you want a Pure Hip Hop album with lots of heave beats, this is definetly the one.

4 out of 5 stars A rather decent first album, definately one for the summer   July 19, 2001

Wait A Minute has become Ray J's biggest hit to date thanks to an untouchable beat by the Neptunes, a delectable appearance by Lil Kim, and that darned unforgettable hook: It's On Tonight...but how about the rest of the album, is it good? Better believe it... Formal Invite is clearly a winner (produced by the Neptunes); it jiggles a la Mystikal's Danger - just a little faster. While it might take a second to get used to Ray J's nasal vocals on here, the beat is certainly undeniable. I can't say enough about this song...a club banger for sure. Keep Your Head Up is a smoldering Rodney Jerkins track that oozes sincerity and experience. It's an uplifting ballad that Ray J performs quite well on. Keep Your Head Up is radio material for sure. Might be my favorite actually, and Ray J sounds like a tad like Michael Jackson when he's raspy on this one...especially near the end. The Neptunes (yet again) deliver the album's most unique track in the form of Out The Ghetto, a catchy midtempo that will speak to a lot of folks who can relate to the subject matter. I think Ray J will win a lot of young hearts who can feel this - it's actually inspiring... The album's title cut, This Ain't A Game is a Rodney Jerkins creation, with pop aftershocks. If you miss Immature/iMx, you'll like it too...the most 'kiddie' sounding song on the album. Wet Me is produced by Jodeci's DeVante, and it works. So does Crazy, the third Rodney Jerkins track, but it's the last song that ends the album perfectly, called Where Do We Go From Here, because it's a breezy track that suits Ray J's voice perfectly. There are only two cuts in my opinion that could have been left behind: U Need it and I Got It All - they're filler. But every other song is good. Lastly, I'll add that the song I Tried is kinda funny; peep it for real. Oh, and I also can't forget No More...this sad ballad about breaking up is surprisingly powerful. Now don't you go and get it all twisted (smile): Ray J is not the best singer in RB by any stretch of the imagination, but he does get the job done - and then some. What impressed me most about 'This Ain't A Game' was that Ray J wrote and produced a lot of this album, including Takin Control, a solid Donell Jones-ish midtempo. Ray J is even given a co-executive producer credit, and for those in the know, that's no small accomplishment.

4 out of 5 stars Could suprise a few people   December 15, 2002
Rishi Ingreji (London)
When i first receive the album, i didnt really know what to expect considering his claim to fame is being the brother of Brandy. I am generally a fan of artists such as Common, Talib Kweli, and Nas. I was actually pleasantly suprised. It is a solid album, consisting of soft ballards and speeded up beats (best illustrated by the neptunes production of 'wait a minute' and 'formal invite'). It is a youthful artist who probably has a lot more to offer in the future, i would recommend this album to those who like soul and R'n'B, but if you are a into Black Thought and Dead Prez it may not be your thing.

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad debut.   July 9, 2001

Not a bad first effort from Brandy's brother. Undoubtedly the best tracks on the album are produced by the Neptunes. Wait a Minute (feat Lil' Kim)and Formal Invite are top tracks, which feature pounding beats, and are sure to get you moving! The rest of the tracks are what we have come to expect from solo male RnB artists, and simply add to the album. Definately a worthwhile listen, if nothing else!

1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing Debut   July 24, 2001

From someone whose family is so highly acclained in this music business, a strong debut is expected and was anticipated, at least on my part. The album starts out with an off beat, apallingly mixed joint that leads into the Neptunes produced club track 'Wait A Minute' which is a bad cut form the untouchable producers whose sound has been unbeatable for a long time now. Although Kim's flow tightens the track, Ray's isms take the album down 2 stars. The rest is bad - the worst being where Ray takes to the boards, stay off them man and stick to the mic! Maybe 2 tracks produced by Rodney Jerkins bring this album it's 1 star, however I suggest you stick to Urban Renewal for your Norwood family fixes. Ray has definitely dissapointed.
