Amazon.co.uk Review
Taken literally, the IVery Best of Prince/I title is sure to cause endless arguments. Nothing from IDirty Mind/I, not a trace of the early IControversy/I, no "Erotic City", no non-LP cuts at all, save some edited single-versions and a cold shoulder to the criminally out-of-print IGold Experience/I. As a compendium of 17 key A-sides from 1979 to 1992, however, IThe Very Best of Pri nce/I is (ahem) a quick-'n'-dirty review of the days when the Artist was, in the estimation of R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, one of the weirdest musicians in the Top 10. Blessed with both creative cunning and the wish to reach every listener possible, Prince revitalised rock and soul modes from the sex-crazed ("Little Red Corvette") to the cryptically spiritual ("Purple Rain"). Often he blurred lines between attitudes as surely as he did musical ones; the New Testament image of "Thieves in the Temple" became in his hands a complaint about a stolen girlfriend. A fine party artefact, this disc is still likely to prove too scanty even for many casual Prince fans. I--Rickey Wright/I

5 out of 5 stars Prince best? the full albums better!   August 23, 2002

This CD is ok as an introduction or for a casual Prince or music fan - but does not do the one artist from the 80's that is in the top 10 of all time (based across song writing, live performance, groudmaking music etc) justice - as there is so much more to Prince than just the big hits or even just the singles. If you like this buy 1999, Parade and Emancipation to get a better picture of how good Prince really is.pPrince disowned this and stopped a tour just to reinforce it had no endoresment from him, but I think that only had an adverse effect on him as perhaps younger people didn't get to be aware at how good and influential he is and was: to name a few that have aped his music over the years woul include Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Terence Trent darby, Maxwell, D'angelo etc

5 out of 5 stars GET YO FREAK ON!!!   December 31, 2003

Well, I bought this CD as an introduction to Prince, since I'm only 21 and therefore remember him best as being a huffy little man with a squiggly name. People seemed to be making a fuss over him so I figured he was fair game.pWise move.pNow my mate John's got Purple Rain on DVD and our fashion tastes are bordering on the exotic. I personally blame this album.pIf you are indeed a long-time Prince fan, I understand if this 'Best Of' annoys you, but for all those other guys out there: its only a fiver at the moment! DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR!!!

5 out of 5 stars PRINCE GREATEST HITS?   August 2, 2001
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

In a word this in reality is not the very best of Prince. Like UK 1 'The most beautiful girl in the world', (his most successful single) is not here and also the mega top-ten hits of 'My name is Prince', and 'Gold', are not here as well as others.pBut these are still a collection of the most diverse, varied and influential songs of the decade. The first hits package had his current very best singles at the time, were only released a few years ago, so i guess u have them.pBut if u don't, get it, this is a real muscian.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised!!   February 11, 2004

I bought this album out of curiosity (and the fact that 1999 is an awesome song), I had only heard one prince song so this album was a surprise to me. The first song on the album, I wanna be your lover is another awesome song, the album flows magnificently. All songs from I wanna be your lover to money don#8217;t matter 2 night are great both musically and lyrically, so whether you are a prince fan or not BUY THIS ALBUM, you will be pleasantly surprised. I actually prefer this to Michael Jackson #8211; Number Ones

I bought this CD on it's initial release in 2001 and was totallyre-introduced to Prince. Although it only contains the songs that manypeople associate with him, it is a perfect starting point for anyone tobegin their musical discovery and journey with Prince. I bought theoriginal Lovesexy Lp in 1988 and the Batdance single in 1989 and nothingelse by him until this CD in 2001, since then I have bought everything hehas ever released on CD(albums)and even some of the original vinyl fromthe 80's and now have over 30 CD's by him. That is the impact that justbuying this CD had on me. For anyone who doesn't know much about thisincredible artist, start here and let the journey begin, you will discoversome of the most awesome music ever made by anyone as your collectiongrows, just as I have. Right now I am experiencing how wonderful his newCD 'Musicology' is, something I may never have done had I never boughtthis CD to start with!!!
