Amazon.co.uk Review
Mrs Beckham completes the set of solo Spice Girls albums with her self-titled debut, IVictoria Beckham/I. Leading off with the first single and meatiest song on the album "Not Such an Innocent Girl", the 12 tracks breeze through a number of different styles with varying degrees of success. You can hear Victoria's voice adapt to suit the song, not quite finding a style of her own but still sounding far better than many critics could have imagined. "A Mind of It's Own" is very pleasant, inoffensive pop where VB sounds little like former band mate Geri in a whisperey, half-sung, half-spoken kind of way. Another song where her voice and style morph into that of a different pop peer is on "I.O.U.", a sweet ballad which sounds a little like a find on the studio floor during Madonna's IRay of Light/I sessions. It's unlikely that Victoria will win any new fans with this effort as there are no songs to stand out and wrestle for attention but aside from over-using the dreaded vo-coder, it is easily a pleasant enough, inoffensive pop record. --IGeorgina Collins/I

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT ALBUM!!!   January 23, 2002
11 out of 14 found this review helpful

This album proves that Posh Spice, Victoria Beckham does have a voice and knows how to use it. There are so many fantastic songs on the album, each one with it's own merit. Ignore 'Not Such An Innocent Girl', a big mistake, but buy this album, it's worth it!pTrack-by-Track reviewp1 Not Such An Innocent Girl - The worst song on the album, this shouldn't have made the album. The song isn't that catchy but Victoria certainly can sing, and she proves it here in this rather bland record. ( 6 / 10 )p2 A Mind Of Its Own - Much better, this is very surprising, the spoken parts and the verses really do work, and the chorus is just one of those choruses you just cannot erase from your head for the whole day. The second single, should do better than the first. (8 / 10)p3 That Kind Of Girl - A nice chilled out vibe on this song, with wonderful vocals from Victoria, a song for the Mums Dads out there, Definitely NOT A SINGLE!!!, but really good all the same. ( 8 / 10 )p4 Like That - A fantastic RB/Pop song, with a KILLER chorus. Victoria is full of attitude here, really catchy verses and a very sophisticated sound. Could be a single. ( 9 / 10 )p5 Girlfriend - Another wicked track, along the lines of P!NK Destiny's Child. Really hard beats and a very catchy chorus. Halfway this song turns from an RB song to a garage. Very good indeed, rumored to be the third single, should be!!!! ( 9 / 10 )p6 Midnight Fantasy - Hmmmm, not bad, but a bit unoriginal, a good party song, with sexy vocals. A bit similar to Kandi's 'Don't Think I'm Not', but a bit poppier! ( 7 / 10 )p7 I.O.U. - A really nice ballad, with a very orchestral sound, nice chorus and irresistible beats. Not a single. ( 7 / 10 )p8 No Trix, No Games - YES!!! This is EXCELLENT!!! Produced by the team who produced 'Genie In A Bottle', for Christina Aguilrea, this is soooo good. It has a nice pop/RB edge to it and in the chorus; Victoria's voice is so hypnotic. Very good, could be a single. ( 9 / 10 )p9 I Wish - This is another brilliant song. This is produced by Soulshock Karlin who produced for Whitney, Mya, Destiny's Child Jennifer Lopez. This is more RB than any of the other previous songs. Probably one of the standout tracks on the album. Victoria's vocals are superb on this and this HAS to make it as a single, EXCELLENT! ( 10 / 10 )p10 Watcha Talkin' Bout - Another Soulshock/Karlin song, another brilliant, excellent track, along the lines of Brandy Monica and Destiny's Child. This is another song that could be a single. ( 9.5 / 10 )p11 Unconditional Love - Produced by Rhett Lawrence who did Melanie C's 'Never Be The Same Again', this is a spine tingling ballad, written for David Beckham by Victoria. Perfect for Christmas, Nice vocals and very tear-jerking. Another single perhaps?? ( 8 / 10 )p12 Every Part Of Me - A nice cute song to finish off the album, dedicated to Brooklyn Beckham. A nice beat and good vocals, not single material, but still very good. ( 8 / 10 )

5 out of 5 stars Totally Unbelievable   June 2, 2006

I didn't actually get hold of this album until about 3 months ago, but OH MY GOD!!!! What a fanatastic album. Having an extremely eclectic music taste, and thinking 'Posh Spice' was just a marketing puppet. I, frankly, didn't use to be a fan, BUT after listening to this shamefully overlooked masterpiece, I definately am now. br /Even though I like the 2 singles Victoria released from the album, I have to say they are actually a 'tad' on the weak side when compared with the rest of the songs. For example 'I Wish' 'Like That' 'Girlfriend' are just fanatastic, so is 'IOU' (and thats coming from somone who doesn't really like ballads).

5 out of 5 stars HOT DEBUT OFFERING FROM SOLO SPICE NO 5!   September 19, 2001

Anybody who had previously branded Victoria Beckhams singing talent as pretty dismall should listen to this debut offering. The production skills on this record should make Michael Jackson jealous. Posh has teamed up with many top american r'n'b producers who have previously worked with Brandy, Monica and Toni Braxton to name but a few. If her vocal talent at times lacks the writing skills of Victoria Beckham have certainly improved since her spice days. To sum up this record I strongly recommend it to any r'n'b/garage/pop fan. This album will appeal to a much older fan base than Posh has been previously linked to. I enjoyed listening to upbeat songs on the album because they are fresh and different to many of her contemporaries. This album also contains many love songs dedicated to her husband David Beckham.

5 out of 5 stars TRACK BY TRACK   September 24, 2001

Track by Track of one of the years hottest releases:pNot Such An Innocent Girl: Weakest part of the album. Catchy when first heard, but you'll find yourself skipping over this track after a couple of listens. 6/10pA Mind Of Its Own: A great chorus makes this otherwise unremarkable pop tune good. Catchy and Unpredictable. 8/10pThat Kind Of Girl: Romantic Chill-Out song for the lovers out there. Not as catchy, not as melodic, still worth a listen. 7/10pLike That: One of the best on the album. Very much like the current UK music scene. Plenty of attitude and a great hook. 10/10pGirlfriend: A Two-Step feel with Destiny's Child type vocals and a funky chorus. Lots of attitude. Takes some getting used to. 8/10pMidnight Fantasy: Good pop tune much like Janet Jackson. Moves along rather quickly, fantastic catchy melody. Lacking in originality. 8/10pI.O.U.: A great ballad with some nice orchestration and good chorus. 8/10pNo Trix, No Games: Hip and funky. Good verses which sort of run into the chorus, making it less discerable. Still catchy and fun. 9/10pI Wish: The album at its best. Victoria's vocals provide a deep, cool, rich sound and beat and synths make this a great song. Single potential. 10/10pWhatcha Talkin' 'Bout?: Victoria seems to be doing the opposite of other acts by saving the best tracks to the last. The album doesn't let up with this pop tune. Much like a Brandy and Monica tune. Should be a hit. 10/10pUnconditional Love: Reminiscent of Britney Spears DLMBTLTK, only better. Great chorus and verses, spine tingling! 9/10pEvery Part Of Me: The most soulful and meaningful song. The album closes at a midtempo with great chorus and cute laughter. Fun song. 9/10pGet the album. You won't be dissapointed. She still has Spice.

I had heard that I would be suprised by the album. I think that the word is amazed. This is the best solo spice album and the least acknowledged in my eyes (and ears). Track number four Like That has been on repeat on my stereo for hours!! THe album shows us that Victoria has not only style in the way she dresses but the way she sings. She keeps the pop that we have come to hear and love from her in the Spice girls but there is also the RB feel to the album. I love this album and I think that anyone who has ever doubted this Spice with no talent should listen to this and be corrected.
