Amazon.co.uk Review IGoddess in the Doorway/I is one of Mick Jagger's rare attempts to create a solo persona separate from the Rolling Stones--with typically mixed results. Bootleg-savvy Stones' fans understand why Jagger's solo albums tend to be curiously pop-precious and testosterone-challenged; if Keith Richards had his druthers, we'd likely have IExile on Main Street Vol XI/I by now. Indeed, given Jagger's decades-old rep as the most virile dinosaur of the herd, it can be jarring to have the Vulnerable Mick ponder "Wonder if you catch my mood/Can you feel my solitude?" as the strings well on this album's "Don't Call Me Up". But then, being a caricature so large (and ludicrous) can drive an artist to do desperate things, such as sewing their heart firmly to their sleeve in a quest for truth. Infused with a welcome sense of renewed musical adventure on tracks such as the jangly, alterna-nervous Lenny Kravitz collaboration "God Gave Me Everything", the East-West fusion of the title track and modern techno-murk of "Gun" (both co-written with co-producer Matt Clifford), the icon seems finally to have found a solo persona that fits: spiritually awakened world-weary rebel. There's even a devoutly uplifting, Pete Townshend-backed duet with Bono ("Joy") that among other things, makes the U2 singer's reservation at Jurassic Park all but official. Still, it's hard to teach an old cur new licks; the best here is undercut by other genuflections to chart-conscious predictability (the Rob Thomas collaboration "Visions of Paradise") and hoary, ironic arena-ready sentiments of "Everybody Getting High"(with guest guitar deity Joe Perry). I--Jerry McCulley/I

Mick Jagger has done a Thriller with new album! November 19, 2001 stefan.asmussen@toyota.dk (Copenhagen, Denmark) 21 out of 23 found this review helpful
I had heard a lot of good rumours about the new mick Jagger album to be released 8 years after his last average quality rock album Wandering spirits. But I must admit I had my doubts..SO I was totally surprised when I put on Goddess in the Doorway. This is Mick Jagger back at his very finest sending great memories back to She's the Boss and the best Stones albums. These are good songs with great productions and with Micks voice at its best. Dancing in the Starlight, Lucky Day, Everybody Get High, Too Far Gone and Joy are the greatest tracks on this one, all with hit single potential. In fact the good current single God Gave Me Everything is not among the best tracks of this album. And this says it all really. This is one rocking fine record. GO BUY NOW!
Addictive listening - go out and buy! December 26, 2001 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I first heard several of the tracks from Goddess in the Doorway on a chance-caught TV documentary about Jagger, and was immediately struck by the music and the lyrics. I put the album on my Christmas wish list and my teenage son (bless him) bought it for me. It hasn't disappointed and with the exception of tracks 2 and 3 I love them all. Unlike a fellow reviewer, the title track is one of my particular favourites. I love melodic rock and interesting lyrics and this is going to be one of my favourite albums along with Red Hot Chili Pepper's Californication.brI have to say that I find the 'official' review at the top somewhat pretentious, superior and supercilious, but that's rock journalism for you. Looks like five stars all the way from the common listeners out there!
Superb! September 6, 2002 Paula Suckling (Georgetown, Ontario Canada) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have to confess it has taken me 44 years to finally 'find' the Rolling Stones and in particular Mick...sorry, Sir Mick Jagger. I never really liked their music but last month bought Jagger's 66 minute documentary "Being Mick" which took you through the making of Goddess in the Doorway featuring collaborators Kravitz, Wyclef Jean, Bono and Pete Townsend. It was that film that made me buy the CD and I can't stop playing it. If you enjoy watching the process of genius in action then order the video along with the CD. It isn't only about the music but a sort of 'year in the life of Mick Jagger'and very profound it is too!brMy apologies for thinking you were a gormless idiot Mick, goes to show you can't judge a book by it's gyrations...you are one intelligent, generous, caring person who loves his family, great with the kids and a fabulous composer to boot.brThe CD is a great mix of sad, upbeat, dancy, reflective and new-country style songs. I defy you to keep still when Hi Hi Hi plays, the beat is infectious.brNow I'm off to discover his other solo albums and what Keith Richards has to offer.
A superb CD from the greatest rock and roll star of all time November 30, 2001 rosemary_bruce@hotmail.com (Solihull, England) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
A wonderful collection of tracks on the latest CD from this unique performer, from the poignancy of 'Don't Call Me Up' to the classic rock of God Gave Me Everthing and the almost gospel feel of Joy, they all have their own individuality. Admittedly you have to listen to some of the tracks a few times to appreciate them but this is a good thing as it means they are intricate and their appeal will be long lasting although others such God Gave Me Everything (sure to be a big hit) and Everybody Getting High (with the the superb guitar playing of Joe Perry)are just as good even though they'click' immediately.A truly great CD from the greatest rock star of all time.
