5 out of 5 stars If Ed Wood had made records....   March 15, 2004

This is a truly wonderful compilation. It has clearly been put together by a real fan of music the sleeve notes alone (give or take the odd typo) are enough of a reason for buying it. It#8217;s the sort of thing that Nick Horby woukd approve of!pThe contents of the cd are a true eye opener for me too. Of course there are the hits #8211; Telstar-,(wasn#8217;t this number 1 during the Cuba crisis ?), has to remain one of the most joyful records ever (even if it was Mrs Thatchers favourite tune) and the echoed out from another world sound of Johhnny Remember Me is another highlight. But there is a lot of other quirky interesting stuff here too. Some of it is a bit derivative, many of the vocal deliveries are , shall we say, thin but together the collection is very listenable () there are tracks here that are as good as any US rock roll instrumental group summoned up plus some truly classic novelty records. So Ok not all of Heinz tracks are as forgivable as Just Like EddiepThe evidence is also here that Joe did adapt to a post Merseybeat age whilst his creations do not necessarily rant with The Stones or The Beatles then they certainly match anything by. say, the Swinging Blue Jeans . Actually that doesn#8217;t sound very nice which was not my intentionpJoe Meek clearly missed out on anything up to a dozen hit records perhaps in the early days because his business was undercapitalised , perhaps later because he was just a teeny weeny bit difficult to work with which tended to result in a BBC ban being slapped on more than a normal percentage of output. Either way I have never heard such a consistent collection of tracks of early 60s music that didn#8217;t sell in copious quantities.pBut, lets face it- 56 tracks? That#8217;s quite awe inspiring if you don#8217;t know the work (could this be important enough to be an oevre?) I have to say I found the entire thing unlistenable when stuck in a rush hour jam this morning. But choose your moment , listen with a generous heart learn that there was life in British music before The Beatles

5 out of 5 stars Do you believe in magic?   July 9, 2003

Magic is what you'd expect from an alchemist Britain's first independent record producer was familiar with providing just that thing on a regular basis, if this compliation is anything to go by!pJoe Meek flourishes on here from his last productions for the big boys(end of 1959) to the very end of his independent productions in 1967. All the hits are here, plus the misses the classics that people failed to notice at the time. If you wonder why an obscure single from that era has a huge price tag, it's usually because it's an RGM(Robert George Meek) production. 2 CD's worth gives you a very broad range of Joe's work shows you how carefully he crafted his work-some very ordinary songs become one magic performance after another, so often the result of Joe's efforts-as a result of which, several artists, notably John Leyton Lord Sutch, swallowed their own self-doubts and went on to lucrative or distinguished careers.pThis set captures the heart of British pop music from 1960-1964 and then shows there was talent to burn beyond the charts from 1965-1967, too. Joe Meek was probably too complex and contradictory a character to be captured as easily, but the set does full credit to his professionalism and enthusiasm to create a perfect single-Johnny Remember Me,Telstar Have I the Right being just 3 good examples of how often he did it or got darn close to it-there's ten times as many reasons to buy this!

Joe Meek-Genius or Nutcase? You decide after reading the book. br /This double CD contains all the hits and is all you need though for the completist just about eveything else Meek produced is available now-even the unissued stuff. br /Joe Meek actually produced-or rather engineered- one of my all time favorites in Humphrey Lyttleton's Bad Penny Blues which can be found on a CD of his pre RGM things. br /He started off with the short lived Triumph label which signed a Liverpool artist Michael Cox who became his first hit. br /Though he topped the American chart with Telstar-the last U K name before the Beatles he once blew a chance to record the Fab Four at the time he met Brian Epstein trying to find them a recording contract. br /Probably that was fortunate the same as it was when Decca turned them down. br /Meek was out of fashion in the Merseybeat years and was usually held by rock critics to represent all that was wrong with the U K music industry pre Beatles. But that misses the point -he was only out of fashion until the market swung back to his era during the 80s.Today many Meek experts were not even born during his time. br /Sure there were bummers but the good always outweighed the bad br /However another good compilation of Meek recordings is Joe Meek's Girls which only repeats one item here

For over forty years I had forgot Joe Meek and many of these GREAT recordings.brWhat a wealth of talent is featured in this Classic JEM.br Having only recently purchased this cd set for THE HONEYCOMBS tracks (Back in the Radio Caroline CLub days I (a member) had won a pop picking competition for having nominated newcomers THE HONEYCOMBS to reach No.1 in the Hit Parade. Somewhere back in time my prize copy of the original 45rpm record had been lost. br Only when I listened to the other GEMS featured I found the 60s expressions of FAB, HIP, COOL, SWINGING and SUPER do not encompass the pleasure my ears and mind were experiencing. All the tracks including, 'Only the heartaches', 'Angelo Jones', 'Johnny Remember Me', 'Please Stay', etc.. ALL had my feet tapping.br Even Screaming Lord Sutch's tracks that I can't recall ever hearing back in 60s, his tracks adds body (excuse the pun) to recapturing all that was good and crazy from that era in time. br To those from the Swinging 60s this cd set will recapture great moments from your youth. To those unfortunates' living after the Swinging 60s THIS IS A MUSICAL HISTORY CAPSULE.brEnjoy.

This just pure and simply blew me away. I've been aware of him for many years, liked the odd track, hummed along and left it at that but Boy! was I ever wrong! This guy needs serious re-visiting, re-appraising or re-constructing from the ashes of his reputation. Anyone with a serious interest in music or popular culture should dive into Joe's world without hesitation. From the Forest of Dean to the King of Teen is a mighty leap but Joe pulled it off with aplomb. Play his stuff and then play Spector and tell me who's the greatest. No contest, take it away Satellite Joe (get the book by John Repsch as well). Gloucester's finest radio/TV repairman who produced some of the greatest teen pop ever heard. Whaddaguy!
