Alicia is the new queen of RnB November 27, 2003 Cynthia Selene (Miskolc, Hungary) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I thought piano belongs to classical music, not to modern R'n'B. I was wrong. This CD is something new and original and Alicia is a true talent. The best songs are the 4 singles, but the others are also worth listening, my favorite non-single tracks are Jane Doe, Butterflyz and Rock Wit U. I'm glad I bought the special edition 'cause this remix of "A Woman's Worth" is so COOL. (A hint: don't turn off your CD player after listening it... wait a few minutes. :)brThe CD also contains a weblink to a page where you can find videos and some Alicia stuff.

This album is my favourite album yet out of a collection of 200 CDs! The tones and textures complement each other thought the harmonise cords. This album is the one were you can sit down after a hard days work relax maybe with a bottle of wine and just play right through not having to worry about getting up and hitting the skip button. Songs in A minor is not only for relaxing its for all occasions, dinner partys, driving, dates ect.pI could go on and on about they way she uses dynamics and tempos and how the merge of all the notes make you tingle, but it would be best for yourself to buy the album and enjoy the angelic voice of Alicia Keys.

Songs In A Minor Has the Keys to your Heart April 23, 2002 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
A 20-year-old New Yorker, Alicia Keys is a breath of fresh air amid the existing mainstream situation and has the makings for great success in the RB/soul, even popular, domain. Not only does she boast all the archetypal requirements for global success, she has also secured the espousal of the critics, being regularly compared to Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, et al. In addition, her adolescent influences illuminate her music to full effect: James Brown practically has an invisible presence in the undulating Fallin', while Caged Bird gives more than a subtle nod in the direction of Stevie Wonder. The entire album is enriched by a classical inspiration coming from a talented classically trained pianist.pSongs In A Minor is full of contrasts from the introspective Piano I through the pensive Caged Bird. Keys's vocal talents are best represented on Prince's How Come You Don't Call Me (testimony to her abilities, indeed) and A Woman's Worth, while Goodbye, Never Felt This Way/Butterflyz and Why Do I Feel So Sad enthral through their throbbing earnestness. The album also dabbles in sassy groove (Girlfriend), Latin flavours (Mr. Man) and rhythmic funk (Rock Wit U). Songs In A Minor is an excellent debut album that stands out from the crowd and, when all's said and done, an artist that is invited to perform at the House of Commons at a show organised by a Labour MP must be doing something right.
