Amazon.co.uk Review Everybody knows Lauryn Hill's a brilliant artist but IMTV Unplugged No. 2.0/I just confirms it. This double CD acoustic set recorded for the music television channel contains snippets of material from her debut album, but mostly it's all new "L Boogie" folks. Hill gives a raw, honest performance that comes after a shocking period of depression and unhappiness for the ex-Fugees singer. According to reports Hill lost her creative light after copyright lawsuits over her Idebut/I) and a tempestuous relationship with her partner Rohan Marley (son of Bob). Now she's divested herself of emotional and physical baggage (though not Rohan), evident in this stripped down performance that is basically just Hill and her unplugged guitar.p The material's release has been long delayed, no reasons have been given but this session's highly spiritual nature may lie behind it. Hill's found spirituality in a big way. New material includes "I Find It Hard To Say (Rebel)", a blistering comment on the shooting of African immigrant Amadou Diallo by the New York police in 1999. Throughout Hill's voice is rough and throaty giving the performance an earthy, heartfelt pull. She cuts across musical styles from bossa nova ("Just Like Water") to Marley-esque rebel songs ("Oh Jerusalem", "The Conquering Lion", "Freedom Time"). And Hill's lyrics are deeply personal. She sings of stepping away from her public persona to keep from being trapped by the image fame created for her. She rails against everything from self-delusion to government corruption to religious dogma without being overbearing or pretentious. In destroying her old artistry she discovers a new creative force. And all the while she stays mesmerisingly, enchantingly musical. Who else could leave Alicia Keys sounding like a wannabe? This is an instant classic. --IJake Barnes/I

Most beautiful collection of spiritual lessons April 21, 2002 12 out of 18 found this review helpful
Lauryn hill has produced a masterpiece which i think shee would find hard to surpass.the lessons continue from her previous hit,'Miseducation of Lauryn hill' her personal experience and her view of the world of today is beautifully transformed with the help of just her guitar and a wonderful voice.pI'll recommend this album to any music loving person and even those segregative of genre.

This recording is a dramatic contrast to the groundbreaking 'Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' but still works dramatically well for me. These are all acoustic recordings, all written and produced by Lauryn Hill. The raw emotion and ways of communicating a message you get from listening to Lauryn is so rare it is such an amazing thing to experience. There are some very political messages on some of the songs but the way Lauryn communicates this always outstands me; her rhyming ability is truly genius and I really admire her honesty throughout these recordings.pMy favourite moment from this CD had to be 'Just Like Water'; the melody, lyrics and guitar riff are truly soothing.pBeing completely honest, if you are looking for the kind of sounds you got from the Miseducation CD, this CD is probably not for you. However, if you just love the sound of Lauryn's voice or are looking for some kind of spiritual guidance this CD is perfect for you.pHowever, the inevitable second studio recording from Lauryn is most definitely on its way, and with studio versions of 'I Find It Hard To Say' and 'Water' (featuring Common) recently emerging, other songs from this set could very well appear on the new CD, so if you want a taster of some potentials for the new studio album check this CD out.pThe last completely new studio recording to emerge from Lauryn was in October 2004, this was 'The Passion' and you can find that on the CD 'Passions of the Christ: Songs Inspired By'.
ear-gasm July 8, 2002 Philippe (London, UK) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
just her and an acoustic guitar, what more do u want. yet again, her lyrics are breath takin, she starts crying towards the end cos she gets so emotional, her songs are magical especially adam lives in theory and i gotta find a peace of mind, there are different styles from freestyle to melody. Even if the music isnt studio perfect, cos its live, its different cos of that, and the result is better. Lauryn is a born preformer and in this album she does what she does best, its that simple.
Pure Beauty...Amazing, Inspiring... December 25, 2002 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is Lauryn Hill as she should be...flaunting her raw, pure beautiful vocals. She takes you on a spiritual journey, but she does not preach to you..this is just absolutely amazing. Her voice sounds very deep, throaty and raw which makes this so special, you know she is singing from the heart, Lauryn refuses to follow the crowd..this is an album that is so refreshing, Im in awe of Lauryn Hill's talent so will you be. If you want an honest, beautiful and inspirational album, you MUST buy this.pxxx
there is no summary to her brilliance May 16, 2002 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
The long awaited 2nd album is finally upon us and hasn't disappointed. It is very different to her last album all the funk, base and body-shaking melodies have been taken out and instead we are left with her raw talent. In some artists case this would be an absolute nightmare if you stuck them on a stage with a guitar and said sing. She, however is a natural and after hearing this i would gladly listen to her simply talking for 2 hours. There are still the interludes that were featured on the last album but they are more like intro's to her next song. She is honest and expresses with the audience what she has learnt and felt since her last album, you can hear this from the maturity in her voice. brEach song is 8/9 mins long and they are written, produced and sung by her live.brBuy this album if you want to hear pure talent and in many cases the answers to questions that you ask yourself in everyday life. There are only a few artists that match her talent and this album is well worth buying.
