5 out of 5 stars Explosive, Stunning, Amazing....get the drift???   April 24, 2003

This album is living proof Hollywood stars can rock! After the failed attempts at rock stardom made by some big screen stars, Jared Leto has proved it can be done and with some style. The soaring vocals are complemented by heavy, riff laden guitars and thrashing drums. This, however does not mean it isn't melodic-'93 Million Miles' and 'Year Zero' combine crashing choruses with calmer verses before ripping back into a loud chorus again, and I love it! 'Buddha For Mary' and 'Capricorn (A Brand New Name)' are probably my favourite tracks but on an album with no weak tracks, it was a difficult choice!

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest albums of all time   December 2, 2005

I have to say until a couple of months ago I hadnt of heard of 30 seconds to mars, until a friend pointed me in there direction. And im so glad he did. Every track is pure magic and the album works great as a whole each track flows from one to the next then in just under an hour the experience is over. But you can always hit play again.pIts the sort of album you get lost in the sounds , it absorbs you in and thats what you need some timespDo not delay add this to your music collection today

Every time I see another actor or actress is releasing an album, I tend to just switch off, and ignore it. Music history is full of ill advised cross overs, or over marketed rubbish, as far as 'musical thespians' are concerned. But this is different. The main man behind 30 Seconds to Mars is Jared Leto. Hardly a household name, but he has had a few high profile roles. Though maybe he should give up his day job, and concentrate on the music! No reflection on his acting ability, just that there is the start of something very special here.pLike VAST and Orgy, 30STM look back to the 80s, and bring the sound bang up to date (unlike the electroclash movement, which seems pretty content to replicate the 80s). There is a sci-fi theme through the album, but this isn't some nonsensical fairy tale. The lyrics deal with real issues, albeit metaphorically. pJared Leto cites Rush as an influence, and the track 'Echelon' could have evolved (musically at least) from 'Grace Under Pressure' and 'Power Windows' era Rush. And the spoken outro on 'Year Zero' could be from 'Signals'. Some influences are more modern, with 'Welcome to the Universe' being reminiscent of Devin Townsend's more melodic moments. I can even hear some Oingo Boingo in the track 'The Mission'. pVocally the sound is very clean (no post grungeisms here), the rockier moments remind me of Robin McAuley, vocalist with long gone 80s rockers McAuley Schenker Group. But don't be put off by all these 80s references, this is definitely a progression, and sounds incredibly fresh in a climate of nu metal has beens, and Nickelback wannabes. And unless I hear something fantastic by the end of December, my album of 2002.

5 out of 5 stars how good can a movie star be?   April 3, 2003

i first downloaded capricorn (a brand new name) off the net as i heard a slice of it on tv and was intrigued to its style. i learnt of jared's status as a movie star later on, also later learning he was part of fight club (great film). i would never of expected it to be this good. the amazing style of the musicians pieced together is outstanding, jared's vox are amazing. this a style i have not heard anywhere else and i love it. i just hope that they continue to grace us with their music. well worth five stars, this needs to be in your collection.

This band is, literally, out of this world. Unlike Leto's last band, this one has immense talent and a totally unique theme. All the songs have a running "other-worldly" theme and are really well put together. The drumming is coherent and fitting, the vocals (by Leto and his brother) are harmonious and truly make me shiver!p If you like the sound of a smooth metal ambience, then buy this album! You won't regret it...
