Another great release from Cilla's back catalogue August 1, 2002 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I am one of those people who cannot understand why Cilla has squandered her talent appearing on Blind Date for nearly 20 years with the result that she is not generally remembered for her considerable and excellent singing talent which brought her such critical success in the 60s and 70s. However, I hope with the release of this and the double album "Cilla" and "Cilla sings a Rainbow", a wider audience will understand what us fans have missed over the last 20 years.pI have the original LP so I am eager to hear the tracks digitally re-mastered. Also the inclusion of some of the singles from the 70s is an added bonus as songs such as "He was a writer" is not included on any of Cilla's current CD releases, as far as I'm aware.pOne small issue. I'm not sure why "Conversations" and "Surround yourself" were included as bonus tracks as these are well represented elsewhere on other greatest hits compilations. It would have been nice if this special edition could have included a few more of the more obscure singles for example "Easy in your Company" which I believe was the theme music to Cilla's T.V. comedy series in the 70s and dare I mention "Surprise Surprise" which was also released as a single. Still we can only live in hope that more of her back catalogue will be released to mark her 40th anniversary in show business next year. Particular favourite albums with me are "Junk" and "Day by Day" from the early 70s.pFor those of you who do not know her work really well, then this will serve as an excellent introduction to why she was one of our best female singing artistes.
That Old Black Magic At It's Best!! August 7, 2002 Neal Dzik (Seattle, Wa USA) 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
EMI continues with it's re-issue of Cilla's back catalogue - this time with the original 1968 'Best of Cilla'. brI know many fans will say not another compilation but this collection has the distinction of being an original album which charted in 1968.brThe plus to this CD is that it includes tracks which have previously been un-issued on CD before including Stevie Wonders 'I Believe', the haunting 'I Wanted To Call It Off' and the cult 'He Was A Writer'.brIf this is a preview of what we might expect from EMI next year when Cilla celebrates 40 years in show business, we will be in for more suprises.
Cilla Black really is an amazing singer!!! November 24, 2007 Jake M (England) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Long before Cilla Black became the queen of Saturday night TV with legendary shows such as "Blind Date" and "Surprise Surprise", she was a pop star with many hit singles, albums and EPs to her name. Her voice is pure magic, jet black and just amazing, it's no wonder then that many of her songs shot up into the top ten in the UK from 1963 to 1974. She even had a couple of no.1 hits, the incrediable "Anyone Who Had A Heart" and "You're My World".
br /This great, super value compilation album is a re-issue of Cilla's top 30 greatest hits LP from 1968 with 11 great bonus tracks added. All her main hits are here and the bonus songs are a must!, my favorites being the beautiful "He Was A Writer", "I Believe" and "It's Now".
br /All in all, this is one great album and living proof that Cilla is every inch one the UK's most incrediable singers, do yourself a favour and pick up your copy of "The Best Of Cilla" today!
This really is THE BEST of Cilla Black August 17, 2002 P V Mellor (Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire United Kingdom) 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
It's good to see re-issues of Cilla material in time for her 40th anniversary next year. The Best of collection was originally released to coinside with the second BBC series of 'CILLA' variety shows at the end of 1968, when Cilla's career was a mere five years old. All the big hits to date were included along with one or two selective album tracks for good measure.pThis re-issue gives us 11 bonus tracks with 5 of them making their debut on CD. This album is worth buying just for the inclusion of Cilla's 1977 single I Wanted To Call It Off - this single was in a class of it's own, her performance is outstanding it is Cilla-the-ballad-belter at her very very best.pI am a fan of Cilla's practically from the start of her career - I am not one of these people who have just heard a couple of tracks and now think she is wonderful - I have seen Cilla many times Live and fondly recall Cilla performing I Wanted To Call It Off in cabaret - the recording captures Cilla's emotion of her live performance perfectly.pThis CD will be a welcome addition to any collector of 60's music as well as introducing a new audience to the power and range of our Cilla. Lets hope there are lots more CD releases to come our way to celebrate 40 years of this countries best entertainer. There is so much dross put out by artists who have never come within spitting distance of Cilla's recording success and yet she is all too often overlooked. CD releases of this calibre will help to rectify the situation.pHe Was A Writer/Alfie Darling/It's Now and the old Stevie Wonder track I Believe are welcome inclusions on this CD - He Was A Writer deserved to be a much bigger hit than it was. pCongratulations EMI on a superb compilation.
Riding high on hits, this is Cilla @ her BEST! July 23, 2002 Mr. K (UK) 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
I love this album. Not only do I adore the cover shot by John Kelly [hmmmm, wonder where Madonna got the idea to do the cow-girl look??] but this collection by the original 'pop princess' really gives you a great retrospective of class Cilla. pMy favourites would have to be some of the new tracks to CD which include the adorable It's now and He was a writer. It's understandable why they are so popular with Cilla's fans.pMy only advice is buy the 'Cilla/Cilla sings a rainbow' CD and begin a collection of what will hopefully be the complete re-issue of Cilla's enitire Parlophone/EMI back-catalogue.
