Amazon.co.uk Review
Best known as the Backstreet Boy with the annoying wee brother (Little Aaron), Nick Carter's INow or Never/I is a change of direction for this former teen star. As the lyrics to "I Stand for You" attest ("I'm gonna have a tattoo, I'm gonna have an attitude") the release is a predictable coming-of-age diversion into rock. Lurching between Nirvana-style grunge ("Help Me") and Bryan Adams soft rock ballads ("Do I Cry for You?" and "Heart Without a Home"), the album's unashamedly targeted at a pseudo-rebellious teen audience (although parents may enjoy the Adams-style compositions). With tracks such as "Girls in the America", "Miss America" and "Scandalicious" the rest of the album could easily provide the soundtrack to any upcoming teen flick. "Blow Your Mind" is the one standout track on the album, which opens as a simple piece of electronica but explodes into a rock epic. Though written and produced by some of the record industry's greatest (including Gary Clark and Teddy Riley), however, "Now or Never" always uncomfortably misses the mark. --IJohn Galilee/I

5 out of 5 stars Don't be put of by the fact that Nick is a Backstreet Boy   November 3, 2002

I listened to this album with a completely open mind. You might think that because I am a huge backstreet fan that I would praise this album no matter what. That wasn't the case, I decided that I would try to see hear the album through the ears of a Backstreet hater. I believe that even if you are not a backstreet fan you should check this album out.brIt has flavours of Bryan Adams and even Bon Jovi. I believe Now or never has something to offer every one. brRocky tunes like Girls in the U.S.A, Is it saturday yet and Forever Rebel (Bonus Track). Slow romantic tracks like I Got You, Do I have to Cry for you and Who Needs the World. Up tempo tracks such as Help Me and My Confession.brThe track to really check out is Blow Your Mind, it almost has an 80's feel, up tempo and very catchy.brOver all this album show off Nicks talents as a vocalist and it's a million miles away from the stuff he did with Backstreet.brWell done Nick...you have done us proudbrEnjoy :)

I have 225 CD albums, and have a wide range of musical tastes, but out of all my CD's Nick Carter-Now or Never would be in the top five, it's truly amazing. There's a bit of everything for everyone, and he's left the Backstreet Boys image well behind. This guy is a talented guy. brBuy the album and be surprised.

5 out of 5 stars Different but still quality   November 2, 2002

This album shows a very different side to nick carter that many may not be aware of. This cd is very rock influenced, and many tracks have hints of sounds from the likes of bon jovi and bryan adams. pIn my opinion stand out tracks on the album are the single 'help me','my confession', 'I stand for you', 'do i have to cry for you?'a superb ballad, 'heart without a home (i'll be yours) another balad' 'who needs the world' a ballad also and 'I got you' which i believe is undoubtly the best track on the album, an up tempo rock song that you will love to sing along to while driving in your car. pThe rest of the album tracks are pretty much rock sounding, the album doesnt have any fillers, each track is slightly different and catchy.pIn my opinion all songs mentioned above could potentially be singles. I would recommend anyone buying this album, but with an advanced warning that the contents are different to what you would expect the backstreet boys deliever.penjoy

5 out of 5 stars Carter can rock with the best of them!   May 9, 2003

Nick Carter said that he wanted to make a pop rock record and he succeeded. "Now or Never" is a great fun album that mixes '80's pop rock with new school rock and a bit of pop. It talks about what any 22-year old knows about, having fun, girls, and still more girls! Girls, from the ones he loves, the one he hopes would love him back, to the downright devious, and Nick sings to them, and to us perfectly. This record shows that he's a very versatile vocalist, each song has a different vocal treatment, from "Help Me"'s raspy vocals to the sensual tone of Miss America. pHe's also showing his songwriting chops in this record. Not usually considered the best songwriter in the Backstreet Boys, he proves that he has the makings to be one of the best. Standout NC co-writes are "Do I Have To Cry For You", "My Confession" and "I Stand For You". pWhat's most impressive about the album is that just when you think: "That's gotta be the best song in the album!", then comes the next track and you'll have the same thought once again. It just overwhelms you. A lot of people can sing but only a handful has that ability to make you feel what he/she is singing about and takes you to another place, and Nick Carter has that ability. Just like when it seems like you're in outer space listening to "I Got You", the production is excellent but it's Nick's voice that draws you in. The album has cohesion but is is far from monotonous, each song has its own special quality. pA lot of people are skeptical about this solo project from the start. Well, doubt no more 'cause Nick Carter has just proven that he's got what it takes to do it on his own.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the wait   November 2, 2002

1. Help Me 9/10 - the first single so far to be released from the album. A great, mid-tempo rocky-pop song and perfect to hum along to on the radio in a traffic jam.p2. My Confession 10/10 - a very original mild rock, mid-tempo pop song with a mellowed out beat.p3. I Stand For You 8/10 - the first really upbeat song on the album and it's a real feel-good bubble rock song with infectious guitar and melody.p4. Do I Have To Cry For You? 10/10 - this is probably the best ballad on the album. A cross between Backstreet Boys' "Drowning" and Bryan Adams' "Heaven", it's a perfect mix of pop and classic rock, resulting in a beautiful love song.p5. Girls In The USA 10/10 - the beat to this might remind you of Queen's "We Will Rock You". An unusual but great combination of rock and reggae (dancehall artist Mr Vegas makes a brief appearance here - think Shaggy), "Girls In The USA" is a big-ass, stomping rock song that you can't resist singing along to.p6. I Got You 9/10 - this song would be a rock ballad if it weren't for a fast beat. With sweet lyrics and a catchy tune, it's another great song to just sit back and listen to.p7. Is It Saturday Yet 7/10 - another feel-good pop-rock anthem, this has some odd parts in it that don't completely correspond with the rest of the song, but otherwise it's a good song with an "I-don't-care" attitude. Check out the synthesized verses :).p8. Blow Your Mind 10/10 - written by Max Martin (the usual choice for Britney, *NSync, etc) it's definitely not what you would expect from him. An awesome rock song which gets all loud at the chorus, there're a few hints of pop in it: otherwise probably the rockiest song on the album.p9. Miss America 8/10 - this is a laid-back mid-tempo pop-lite song. Despite the borderline-cheesy lyrics, the melody is impossible to forget and you'll be humming it for hours.p10. I Just Wanna Take You Home 10/10 - definitely something you'd expect from Blink 182, except without the swearing. Cheeky lyrics, a simple yet great tune and loud poppy-punk guitars, this song is one of the best on the album.p11. Heart Without A Home (I'll Be Yours) 9/10 - going along the same lines as "Do I Have To Cry For You", it's a little more upbeat but once again combines classic Backstreet ballads with classic rock ballads. Sweet, original lyrics, too :).p12. Who Needs The World? 8/10 - this is a nice, simple little song with a quiet beat. Not the most original song on the album, but still perfect to chill out or snuggle to.p13. Scandalicious 10/10 - funnily enough, the two bonus tracks are two of the best on the album. "Scandalicious" is an awesome rock song which packs all the punches you could possibly want and more.p14. Forever Rebel 10/10 - my personal favourite. This also has that I-don't-care-attitude and once again, you'll be singing it for ages. It goes more upbeat for the chorus, and like any other great rock-pop song, has a brief "na-na-na" part in the middle. Kicks butt :).pAll in all, this is an amazing album, combining pop, rock and even little reggae and punk-pop. It shows a personal side of Nick that Backstreet Boys fans have probably never seen before, having written half of the tracks. The boy plays fine guitar and drums, too :). I suggest buying Now Or Never if you want something to really listen to..and pick up the "Help Me" CD single, too, for the brilliant B-side song "Payback".
