Amazon.co.uk Review
If you're only going to buy one Pop Idol product this season, make it IWhat My Heart Wants To Say/I, the debut from series runner-up, Gareth Gates. It's idol album number two (three if you count Rik Waller's), and it's released just in time for the Christmas shopping frenzy. p Boasting a hefty 16 tracks with the singles all tucked at the beginning, this is hard going at first but despite the inevitable fillers, it's a pretty consistent collection. Gareth and his team have covered most bases for their target audience, doing pastiches of artists such as Atomic Kitten, Kylie, Westlife and most notably (where Gareth excels) George Michael. "Sentimental" is a fine funk-tinged pop song but could easily be mistaken for classic George on a dark night. This is surpassed by the standout "Good Thing", which is also influenced by the Wham! man but has a touch of the soulfulness that Will Young could have done with on his debut. p "(I've Got No) Self Control" is a great piece of disco pop that should keep the Kylie kids happy and Gareth (whether assisted or not) sounds in great voice showing a lot more confidence than he did during the earlier part of 2002. So that's the positive side, the downside is that a fair few of the 16 songs are mere fillers where similar results could be attained with a cheap keyboard's demo button. Nevertheless, there are enough decent songs to make it worthwhile. --IGeorgina Collins/I

5 out of 5 stars Gates in Talent Shocker   February 6, 2004

To be fair I'm 23 (so not the usual Gates follower). Bizarre, I know. I recently caught him rehearsing for his UK Tour and was impressed. So, I bought this and thought I'd give him/it a chance. brBasically its got OTT Westlife-o-rama (that always manages to pull you in) and Jackson 5, George Michaelesque killer tunes! Thats right folks the one with the stutter is a poptastique nutter! pTunes to watch out for (incase they beat you to the floor) are:brAnyone Of UsbrSentimentalbrGood ThingbrI've Got No Self ControlbrAlivepAnd for the touchy feelers out there:brWhat My Heart Wants To SaybrWith You All The TimebrThat's When You Know.pThe only criticism here is that instead of 16 tracks S Records could've put out 10/11 with the rest as b-sides on the singles. But overall. Excellent debut! Pop Idol has provided us with two interesting new talents. Watch this space.

5 out of 5 stars A lovely Debut Album with a good mix of tempos   November 28, 2002

I have had this Album for a few weeks now and I can only say it gets better with every play.pThere is a lovely mix of tempos, from upbeat and funky to slow romantic ballads.pMy favourite tracks on the Album have to be What My heart Wants to say, a beautiful ballad sung with feeling, and One and Ever Love, which would have made a beautiful Christmas ballad, and Sentimental and It Aint Obvious which are very upbeat funky tunes. pWith You All the Time is another lovely ballad, beautiful lyrics and melody.pAs well as some great new songs there are also the three big No 1 Hits, Unchained Melody, Anyone of Us, and Suspicious Minds.pAltogether a great Album, which I still cant stop playing. pThis Album would make a great Christmas present, not only for dedicated Gareth fans, but for anyone who is a fan of pop music in general.pA great Debut Album Gareth, very well done.

I am one of Gareth's more mature fans and this CD would certainly not be out of place in any music fan's collection. It has a good mix of ballads and boppy tunes. Don't be put off by media anti manufactured band hype - Gareth has a gorgeous voice and there are some really good tracks on here. Whether you were a fan of Pop Idol or not this album really is well worth buying.

Everyone's talking about it...and even the 'critics' were saying it was a great debut, so naturally being a Gareth fan i was expecting it to be better than what they thought. Nothing prepared me for just how good it actually is though. pTrack 1, I'd forgotten how great Gareth sounded when singing 'Unchained Melody' so I had to listen to it twice! Then we slip into 'Anyone of us' - a classic favourite already in my eyes. Next for 'Sentimental' which apparently is Gareth's next single. It's a great track, really easy to listen to and shows Gareth's singing ability is amazing. I remember Gareth singing this song on the tour and thinking "i like that one".pBefore I knew it I was on track 4 - suspicious minds. Made me get up and dance like Gareth does in the video! Then comes the fantastic 'Downtown' instantly likeable and really catchy. pNext it's the title track 'What my heart wants to say' a really beautiful song - he sang this on tour aswell and it made me want to cry (I said WANT to!). 'Good Thing' is next up, this is one of those tracks which is going to take longer to remember as it's not as catchy as the others but it's still a well-written song. pOther stand-outs on the album are 'Too Serious Too Soon', 'I've got no self control' and 'Alive'.pOverall a fantastic debut album from a fantastic person! If you haven't bought it yet, I seriously recommend you do so!
