5 out of 5 stars A goldmine   October 20, 2003

This superb 2002 collection gathers every track Rod Stewart recorded for Mercury Records between 1969 and 1974, and the retail price is surprisingly moderate. br / br /But that should not be taken to indicate any lack in quality. These 56 songs include remastered versions of all 46 songs from his first five solo albums, as well as ten outtakes (half of which previously appeared on the excellent double-disc "Handbags And Gladrags" retrospective). Ten non-LP songs isn't all that much if you already has all five studio albums ("The Rod Stewart Album", "Gasoline Alley", the fabulous "Every Picture Tells A Story", "Never A Dull Moment" and "Smiler"), but if you don't, this is an excellent way to acquire all of Rod Stewart's very best material in one fell swoop. br / br /The non-LP songs include a good take on "Pinball Wizard", a heartfelt "Every Time We Say Goodbye", and Rod Stewart at his most "country", doing a really great "What Made Milwaukee Famous". br / br /Stewart's first four studio albums went from great to sublime, after which "Smiler" was a bit of disappointment, but it too brings several fine songs to the party. br /There are almost too many highlights to mention; originals like "Lost Paraguayos", "Gasoline Alley", "Every Picture Tells A Story", the beautiful "Mandolin Wind", and the classic "Maggie May", and some of the best cover songs ever, courtesy of the greatest interpretive singer of the last 40 years: br /"Street Fighting Man", "Only A Hobo", "Country Comforts", an incredible "Cut Across Shorty", and the best ever rendition of "That's All Right". br / br /To me, this tough, superbly melodic, and extremely well-arranged folk-rock ranks among the best music of the seventies. br /The only drawback is that the flow of the original albums has been disturbed, but that is a minor complaint. Rarely has this much excellent music been gathered on one album.

5 out of 5 stars Rod at his best !   January 27, 2003

This box set is really a delight to the ear. Anyone who thinks Rod Stewart is a disco/AOR singer should listen to this. The music on this boxset is raw and honest rock with a country-rock/folkrock feel. (check out Ronnie Lane also). The remastering is very well done and this really is the complete Rod Stewart Mercury Anthology which covers the periode 1969-1974. I recommend this set to anyone remotely interested in good music.pMartin from Amsterdam

5 out of 5 stars The only Rod Stewart album you need.   February 23, 2007

Rolling Stone magazine called Rod the biggest waste of talent in Rock 'n' Roll and from this collection you can see why. If he continued on this passage he may be spoken of in the same sense as the true greats like Dylan, Van the Man and Bowie. But it wasn't to be. br / br /This collection is almighty collecting albums of the highest calibre together, especially the first four. The star of the show is Every Picture Tells A Story which is wonderful. The way he takes the songs on make them unique and is his greatest talent yet his songwriting deserves to held aloft also with some very fine compositions. br / br /This could be the only Rod Stewart purchase you need to make. Tread carefully if you want to go further. If you delve into his past and concurrent work with the Faces, it is a journey well worth making.

Superb all the way through, brought back many many good times from way back. No old tracks are left out and will remind you of when Rods voice was at his best. Long live the Faces

I had always dismissed Rod as an artist due to his output of the eighties and his awful dress sense, but I am so glad I took a gamble on this. The music on this set is fantastic and makes me want to apologise to Rod for being so dismissive of him in the past.
