Amazon.co.uk Review Stabbed, shot, assaulted and now with a million-dollar record deal, 50 Cent lives up to the title of his latest album IGet Rich or Die Trying/I. The New York native comes from the same school as B.I.G, Shine and Mobb Deep--a raw street rhymer who mixes the thug and poet in one perplexing package. 50 cent earned extra cred by coming up through mix-tape popularity after his first album was dropped when the ex-boxer was shot on the eve of its release. Guns, threats, drug deals and misogyny populate 50 Cent's outlaw world, but it's a popular mix--hence his recently sealed link with Eminem's record company. p The excellent "Wanksta" was pulled onto the I8 Mile/I soundtrack and Dr Dre produced the crunching first single, "In Da Club". Jamaican Sean Paul puts his now familiar patter on the hypnotic "Dem Not Ready". "If You Want It" is a ridiculously rude party joint, while "Cocaine Dreams" takes a pop at Ja Rule. "Got the Hood on Smash" is, undoubtedly, damn funky. Sadly his first single "How to Rob an Industry N***A" (reminiscent of B.I.G's equally scabrous "Dreams") doesn't appear. Even the most hardcore have to tone it down sometimes. --IJake Barnes/I

One of the best rap CD's of the last 10 years!!! February 12, 2003 10 out of 16 found this review helpful
Put simply, this is one of the all-time classic hip-hop albums!!brGot this yesterday and have listened through it 3 times and am hard pressed to find a single weak track!! In my opinion this is on a par with Snoop's Doggystyle album, in that it has banging tracks one after another!! Both Dre Eminem have bought their obvious talents to this release and with 50's smooth flowin' style it's a match made in heaven. 'What Up Gansta' 'In da club' 'Many Men' and 'High all the time' are all classic tracks.brI can only advise anyone who likes Dre's beats to BUY THIS ALBUM!! Haven't looked at the DVD yet, but when the CD is this good I've already got serious value for money!!

50 Cent has been around alot longer than most folk think appearin' on mixtapes and makin' a mark on the n.y underground scence and most recently on the 8 mile soundtrack. After all the hype surrounding this release it is finally here and has definately been worth the wait. From start to finish this album has great beats along with tight lyrics from 50 with appearences from Eminem,Nate Dogg,Young Buck,Tony Yayo and Lloyd Banks from G-Unit. With Dr. Dre and Eminem as the executive producers of the album it was always gonna be good and any fan of of the shady/aftermath camp should definately get this album
A touch of class March 5, 2003 I. Bilton (UK) 11 out of 20 found this review helpful
I have been sitting infront of my computer now for about 15 minutes trying to think of an opening statement to this album but i don't believe words can do this justice but i will try anyway.pNot since Biggies "ready to die" dropped have i heard so much hype about a rapper from the streets of new york. The hype for this album is well justified and on the evidence of this album I think 50 cent will be around for a long time to come.pTo compare this album to biggies first is unfair as this isnt 50 cents first album release and the style of the album is diferent which is a testiment to how production in hip-hop has changed in the last 8 years. The production on this album is slick and matches 50 cent's lyrical style perfectly, The way i believe it manages this is by not relying to heavily on one producer but by letting alot of producers giving their own styles to individual tracks this means that you avoid the albums production becoming tired and sounding the same and believe me every track on this album sounds fresh.pContributions on this albums come from some great names which include Eminem, Nate Dogg and Dr Dre who although doesnt rap on this he did produce the first single from the album "In da club" which is the best track i have heard since N.O.R.E.'s Nothin'. pBut the real reason for you buying this album is to hear true lyrical genius at work. Normally i would try and pick out the bright spots on the album but to do this i would have to find a bad track to seperate the good ones from which i cant...pThis album has everything including a bit of beef with Ja-rule (always good to hear). Not bad for a man who was shot many times in the legs and in the cheek. BUY THIS YOU WOULD BE MAD NOT TO!p* source from the Westwood show discussing the 50 cent album launch in the UK
Shady Records finally launches into the Big Time! February 11, 2003 9 out of 18 found this review helpful
Brought this album on import as i was prepared to get the biggest rap album of the year before anyone else and i wasnt dissapointed, it was worth every penny of the airmail and more.pThis album is one of the greatest of the past few years with a excellent collaboration with Marshall on 'Patientely Waiting'also featuring his unground classics from previous albums 'Wanksta', 'U Not Like Me', 'Lifes On The Line'. The single ' In Da Club' is also on the album and a great documentary dvd is included giving you a huge insight in to how and when 50 Cent made it into the big time in the rap industry. I would nearly go as far as to say he was the modern day 2 Pac, not on all the tracks, but on some of them you will really beleive me. Suprisingly it is not the sound of commercial rap, which is was pleased with. The beats contained some oldschool g funk beats with more modern day beats. no suprise considering the best producer ever produced the album (Dr. Dre).
Due Change April 16, 2003 Grant (Bexleyheath, Kent United Kingdom) 8 out of 16 found this review helpful
50 CENT, a metaphor for change has been heralded as the saviour of hip-hop detailing truth from the streets and in his debut album, Get rich or Die Tryin' 50 Cent (a.k.a. Curtis Jackson) proves why he was so coveted by various record labels before signing for Shady/Aftermath.brGet Rich or Die Tryin' is a 16 track album conveying the truth of 'hood life and the former boxers rise from it, to mix tapes to an ill fated record contract, before signing for Dr Dre and Eminem's respective labels.brEach track conveys lyrical complexity, and with the production skills of one of the finest producers, Dr Dre 50 cent is at least guaranteed to get rich, and is likely to garner respect both critically and commercially for his offering. brThe lead single off the album, 'In Da Club' is a fast tempo track following a typical Dre mould in selling singles and on this album each track is near excellent. Although the name checking of 'G-Unit' becomes a bit repetitive each track conveys reality in the eyes of 50 and the album shines because of this. The best tracks are that of 'Many Men (wish death)', 'Back Down' and '21 Questions', along with the bonus cut of the now classic 'w***sta' which features on the explosive 8 mile soundtrack. br'Many Men' containing a 'Lose Yourself' (Eminem) like intro is a tale of 50's destiny as a rap artist and the strife caused by his talents detailing a bounty on his head and the precautions he now has to take to protect himself, whilst 'Back Down' launches a verbal attack on Ja Rule.br50 Cent never doubts his talents, the track 'If I Can't' showing his belief in his ability, as does the G-Unit collaboration of 'Like My Style.' brGet Rich or Die Tryin' features Eminem on two tracks along with his production skills and for all Eminem lovers this album is worth purchasing as Shady has definitely upped his game. Eminem and 50 combine well on 'Patiently Waiting' and the lyrically darker 'Don't Push Me,' both tracks showing two rappers combining equally well to produce brilliant pieces of music. brRap album hook favourite Nate Dogg also guests on the slower '21 Questions' a tale of love and the constraints that might surround it, and this track is a certain possibility for the second single, showing a different side to 50's talents.br50 Cent has been hailed as the next big thing and with the future of hip-hop supposedly resting on 50's shoulders Get Rich or Die Tryin' is a brilliant start, 50 with this album a true challenger to the deeply contested crown of New York, contested currently by Nas and Jay-Z. brGet Rich or Die Tryin' is a flawless album, 50 handling nearly every rhyme and never short on lyrics making this album a necessity.
