| Customer Reviews: Not half as bad as you may have heard..... February 17, 2003 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Okay. This CD has received mixed reviews, most of the bad ones being clouded by the fact that Solange is Beyonce Knowles's little sister. But forget all of that and judge Solange as you would any other RB singer not related to someone as ridiculously talented and as famous as Beyonce.brMost of the tracks are great uptempo RB songs. Feelin You, Get Together (from the same production/writing team as Aaliyah's last album), Crush, Feel Good Song, Solo Star and Naive (the hidden track on the album featuring Beyonce) are brilliant. Add to that the fact that Solange co-wrote the vast majority of the songs and produced some of them too; all at the age of 16. brSo forget that she's Beyonce's sister and you have in fact a very impressive debut album for a 16 year old kid. I feared it would be immature but it certainly isn't (well, except for sampling the theme tune for 'Scooby Do' on one song!!) brLots of older people would only dream of having a debut as mature as this (comparing, say, to Nivea's album whcih was disappointing and she's slightly older)I look forwards to the next album!
excellent debut February 21, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Solanges debut album not only launches her vocal talent but her amazing ability to produce at 16!! The album features big production from timbaland, the neptunes, rockwilder, linda perry and damon elliot who has previously worked with destinys child, pink and mya and solange herself. This album is completely different from anything brought to you by destinys child or beyonce herself which is a good thing and as she tells you she is a SOLO STAR! This is reflected in her unique style and look and some unknown but talented producers she brings with her. The album includes 3 bonus tracks which i love and are a definite bonus i don't understand why she has recieved criticism i think perhaps this is because of beyonces success but this is a good fresh album i would reccommend
WOW! THOSE KNOWLES KIDS... April 29, 2003 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
How did two people manage to bring up two such talented ladies? I am of course referring to global superstar and frontwoman of Destiny's Child, Beyonce Knowles, and her little sister, Solange. Beyonce may not have released her debut yet, but her lil' sis shows that she is a star in her own right...br I was delighted after finding this in HMV Scarborough (!), and was even more delighted when I popped it into my CD player and heard that voice for the first time. There are bound to be comparisons springing up all over the place between Beyonce and Solange, and the bottom line is that Beyonce is the better singer. But Solange is by no means bad.br One of the best tracks on the album is the super-sexy 'Get Together', produced by Timbaland. It oozes sex appeal, and Solange's voice is perfectly suited to it. The chorus, while simple, is good - "We're not havin' a party, we're havin' a get together, that's when we get together and do whatever, we're not havin' a party, we're havin' a get together, no plans whatever's clever".br 'Crush' is, well, a pretty song. The backing music is cute and summery, and Solange's voice is great on it. It wouldn't sound out of place on her sister's bezzie mate Kelly's album. Then, there is 'Solo Star', a real gem of a song and one of the best on the album, and features the obligatory appearance from that famous sister of hers. 'Solo Star' is all about Solange doing her own thang, and has lines like "Y'all look like twins in Versace, BCBG, Gucci, Bebe, yeah I like it but don't buy it cos' y'all wear it it ain't for me".br Other songs on the album feature appearances from N.O.R.E, Lil' Romeo and B2K - the next generation of stars. Then there is the Scooby Doo sample! You've been warned! Overall, Solange's done good with this debut, and proved that she doesn't have to trade on her sister for fame, as some other pop siblings seem to do. Solange is in the nu generation of stars. Along with Lil' Romeo, B2K and Nivea, she will be launching her attack on the world soon enough... you have been warned.
