The only way is "Up!" for Shania Twain April 4, 2005 J. McKay (Falkirk, Scotland) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
If you are a fan of Shania's debut album, "Come on over" and are considering buying "Up!", be prepared for a refreshing (but not dramatic) change of direction. The tracks featured on this album are slightly more pop and rock influenced than her usual modern country, but that is by no means a bad thing. On the contrary, Shania has an amazing voice that is suited to virtually every genre of music, and she proves that on this album.p"Up!" is an astounding collection of nineteen superb tracks with no "fillers" thrown in just for the sake of filling time, which is a real plus sign for any album. The sheer brilliance of Shania's songwriting, together with her incredible voice and beautiful backing music, just blows me away. There is a lot of variety on this CD, the main attraction being Shania's trademark "girl power" lyrics against soft electric guitars and her ever-present string arrangements, which are breathtaking in themselves. The first track, "Up!", is a prime example of how rock-inspired this album is; the guitars are very prominent, but not so obvious that it moves away from the pop genre. Other tracks like this include "I'm gonna getcha good!", "What a way to wanna be!" and "In my car (I'll be the driver)", all of which are pulled off to perfection by Shania. There is a lovely Spanish feel to "Juanita", and this track encourages women to find their inner selves, so to speak. A truckload of gorgeous ballads are also included here, such as "Forever and for always", "It only hurts when I'm breathing", "When you kiss me", "I ain't goin' down" and the simply stunning "I'm jealous", my personal favourite from this album. This song really shows the strength and range of Shania's voice, and there are beautiful piano instrumentals complimenting her as she sings. Yet more styles of music are reflected in "Ka-ching!" and "Thank you baby!", certainly the two poppiest tracks of the lot. Both feature the breathtaking string arrangements that were included in most of the songs on "Come on over", and were great single choices from "Up!". By far the best lyrics are that of "She's not just a pretty face", which tells the story of a woman who does absolutely everything with her life: "She hosts a TV show, she rides the rodeo, she plays the bass in a band".pIn my opinion, "Up!" is even better than "Come on over", although many people will disagree as "Come on over" is the biggest selling album ever by a female solo artist, and rightly so. However, I am pleasantly amazed that Shania has managed to produce such a fantastic and versatile comeback album. "Up!" is a must for any pop fan, or any music fan for that matter.

Shania had alot to follow up after the fantastic "Come On Over" album. To come up with something Shania searched deep into her musical routes and produced a fantastic follow up.pThe album gets started with the fabulous "Up" with catchy lyrics and strong vocals this song is certain to bring you up when your down. "I'm Gonna Getcha Good" is a slice of the sophisticated and cool songs that Shania brings her fans and i love it. "She's Not Just A Pretty Face" is a song about appreciating woman and describes how i feel about Shania, she not just pretty but also incredibly talented and this song shows it.p"Juanita" has a great spanish vibe which gets you dancing and singing to this perfection, a very tasteful number. "It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing" is a beautiful and tear jerking heartbreak song which has such deep emotion in it. "Ka Ching" is a catchy and upbeat song about greed and is a true album highlight, i love this track.p"In My Car(I'll Be The Driver)" is the best song on the album, its up tempo and fun with confidence and shows Shania's strong voice. "Forever And For Always" is a cool and lovely song about eternal love and has such lovely lyrics.p"Thank You Baby" is great as are "What A Way To Wanna Be" which is so catchy and is fantastic to the very end, and "I Aint Goin Down" is beautiful and confident. Also "When You Kiss Me" is a very sophisticated ballad that Shania fans will love.pIf you enjoy country music, pop music or just love to dance and sing along then this album would please you. I was certainly not dissapointed with it. a very worthy follow up to "Come On Over".
It's Unfair To Compare February 22, 2004 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
As always, fans are comparing Up! with Come On Over, let me tell you, there is only one winner, and that is Come On Over. But this album still rocks, Come On Over will probably remain the best album by a Female for years to come, but Shania couldn't just stand back and keep releasing for her hit album.brUp! has a number of passionate ballads such as When You Kiss and It Only Hurts. Upbeat Pop tunes like Nah! and Up!. brThis is the album of past two years for me, just for the fact that Shania tried her damned hardest to win more fans, this Album just shows how a singer/songwriter should follow up a multi-million selling album (Over 30 million to be exact).
Shania's still the one! September 1, 2004 J. Dring (UK) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful

Sooo Good October 3, 2007 S. Firth (Leeds, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My sister gave me a copy of this album about 2 years ago, or more maybe. And since I didn't like the single 'I'm Gonna Getcha Good' I thought the rest of the album would be pretty rubbish so I put it away and pretty much forgot about it.
br /
br /Then a couple of months ago I came across it again and decided since I was putting her 'Come on Over' album into my ipod, I would put this in too. And as soon as I listened to it I was hooked.
br /
br /Now I've never been a big fan of Shania Twain as a person, but I really liked her 'Come on Over' album. But this album is better I think. The most amazing song is 'I'm Jealous' it blows me away everytime I listen to it. It's so amazing. And 'It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing' is what it feels like when you split with someone, so beautiful. Also 'When You Kiss Me' has the most beautiful lyrics "I can see you with me when I'm older, all my lonely nights are finally over, you took the weight of the world off my shoulders" so gorgeous.
br /
br /There are a couple of songs I'm not fond of like 'Juanita' and like i said 'I'm Gonna Getcha Good' but the rest are pretty good. Although I think on the single 'What A Way To Wanna Be' Mrs Twain is slightly patronizing singing "Don't be so obsessed, come on give it a rest, this is not some contest, just do your best because nobody's perfect, what a way to wanna be" when it's easy for her to sing about not been obsessed about how you look when she's beautiful!!
br /
br /Anyway, this album is pretty brilliant, I definately think you should buy it!
