Amazon.co.uk review Gareth Gates launches into his second album, the tellingly titled IGo Your Own Way/I, full throttle, producing a monster double album that can only leave Will Young wondering how the IPop Idol/I second overtook him so quickly. It's clear from the outset that Gates is moving (or being moved) into a new, mature direction. Lead single "Sunshine" is a slick MOR soul cut and exactly the kind of song that Simply Red's Mick Hucknall must wish he could still write. "Groove with Me" continues in this way, bringing in a not unnoticeable George Michael vibe. "Let me show ya...I want to know ya", he whispers. Later, "All Cried Out" slows things down slightly and introduces the mandatory string section, but it still throbs with an infectious, unusual beat sitting high in the mix. It's another calculated effort to be different, but it works. However, "Enough of Me" is such an obvious Justin Timberlake wannabe it will make even the most devoted of fans cringe, their pain increasing as it descends into a poor 1991-era Michael Jackson pastiche. p There are no poorly conceived covers here (aside from "Spirit in the Sky", but who would leave that off?). Much of this is funky, high-octane pop music, some of which Gates has contributed to himself. The usual bag of slush ballads are tucked away onto disc two ("Day"), which is crammed with heartbeats, heartbreaks, believing, disbelieving, beauty, pain, tears and goodbyes ad nauseum and are best left for those for whom they're intended (his original fanbase). Gates's benign overlords are hedging their bets, producing an album for everyone--hence the quantity of tracks. Far from being too far-reaching or diverse, it hits the spot too many times to dismiss. Make no mistake, Gareth Gates is here to stay and that might not be such a bad thing. I--Cortman Virtue/I

The BEST Album Of The Autumn September 18, 2003 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
This second album from Gareth Gates proves how much the 19-year old really has grown up in the last few months. Moving on from the material featured on his debut album, released last October and entitled "What My Heart Wants To Say", this double album focuses more on the R'n'B side of 'Pop', with over half the album co-written by Gareth himself, and all of the tracks co-written by highly credited songwriters, Cathy Dennis for example. The double CD is split into 2 genres: Day and Night. Although this CD does feature beatier, rawer and sexier music in comparison to Gareth's previous hits - there is also an element of ballads and a few slower songs for his die-hard fans. A definite must-buy for any fan, or simply someone who enjoys good music, suited to any mood.
*GARETH GATES IS HERE TO STAY* October 12, 2003 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have supported Gareth since we all first saw him audition on the ITV1 talent show 'Pop Idol', so I just new that this album 'Go Your Own Way' would have to be a definate 'MUST HAVE' for me!!!brWhen I first listened to this album, I just couldn't believe how much better it actually was from his first album 'What My Heart Wants To Say', although I loved his first album, this is just such an amazing step-up. He has really matured during the last couple of years, I really think that this young talented lad has far more to give... Please can I just ask all of you people out there who have gone off Gareth because of his change of image, to just have a listen to this album, because you will then see that Gareth still has a selection of "BEAUTUFUL BALLADS' all of-which you will find on CD2 (Day)!!! -Overall, an amazing 2nd album, from a Gorgeous, Loving 19yr old with Incredible Talent.
GO YOUR OWN WAY to ....NORTH AMERICAN RADIO ! December 5, 2003 FredericWhite (Montreal,Canada) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
VIVA THE NEW GEORGE MICHAEL ~! Here in North America we've never heard of GATES. This is perfect pop for top40 radio (ABSOLUTELY a la George Michael). When the North American media finally get a hold of GATES and this out of the park double CD project, GATES will explode world wide. His CD contains strong material that is going to satisfy any true pop music fan. Hey United Kingdom, where and why have you been hidding this vocalist? He really puts our IDOL WANNABES (aka:Clay Aiken) to shame. This is how a real "POP" vocalist should soun
An excellent album from Gareth September 24, 2003 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
I bought this album on Monday and havnt stopped playing it since. Split into 2 CD's it has something for everyone. I really love CD1 which has some funky upbeat songs, 7 of which have been written by Gareth. Stand out tracks on this Album are Absolutely, Enough of Me, All Cried out and Club Hoppin. The last three written by Gareth are a testiment to his huge potential as a songwriter.brCD2 is more mellow but has some lovely songs, Say it Isnt so a beautiful power ballad, Foolish a very quirky song which shows off Gareth's vocal abilities perfectly and Skeletons a lovely little pop song are just some of the good tracks on this CD.brAll in all, a great album, definitely a step up from What My Heart Wants to Say and a great new direction for Gareth.
gareth just a little better September 23, 2003 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
ive listened to the album and i would like to say that it is by far better than his first album. sunshine is a great new pop song. it seems that people are overlooking him alot now. its up to him to keep his status alive, because this is his second go around and it determines whether he will stay around for years to come. so if you liked his first album there's no reason why you shouldn't like this cd. go out and buy it your assured a good quality pop album.
