Amazon.co.uk Review
IHeavier Things/I should surprise more than a few critics. John Mayer's big-label debut was a multi-platinum breakthrough success whose sensual anthem "Your Body is a Wonderland" scored him an unlikely Grammy for Best Pop Vocal. That out-of-the-box success--and more than a few critics grousing that Mayer's muse was cloned from Dave Matthews--primed him for the typical sophomore slump. Instead, Mayer delivers an album whose tone and title suggests a gentle, tongue-in-cheek rebuke to his naysayers. Propelled by the subtle ambitions of an expanded pop-jazz framework (largely courtesy of Sheryl Crow/No Doubt producer Jack Joseph Puig), Mayer's breathy vocal tack now suggests a detached, conflicted and significantly less precious incarnation of Michael Franks. But the way he weds fluid pop hooks to lyrical concerns, whose self-obsessions are undercut by telling dollops of self-deprecation, should clearly draw listeners in, from the my-spirit's-too-smart-for-my-body laments of "Clarity", upbeat single "Bigger than My Body" and bluesy plea "Come Back to Bed" to the cautionary, melodically rich "Daughters" and even the anti-materialist agitpop of "Something's Missing". I--Jerry McCulley/I

5 out of 5 stars I was'nt expecting this!   December 25, 2003

"Heavier Things," it was indeed. I first heard John while on exercise in Canada. "Why Georgia" was the tune, from his 1st album "Room 4 squares". It had a mellowness to it that matched my taste in music better than could imagine. So, on just that tune, I bought his album. I was plesantly surprised at how much I played it. Im normally one of those people who buy a cd, listen to it five or six times, then shelve it and buy something newer. brRoom 4 Squares has now been joined by "Heavier Things" in my cd changer, which plays non-stop when Im at home. "Heavier Things" is different from Room 4 Squares, not better, but equal, but in a different sort of way. Its more intense, and as another reviewer stated, his lirics are "3D" in comparison to the classic ballad or love song. He can express himself so well, musically on his guitar, verbally. If u sit listen to it properly, you get immursted, you may find urself sheading a silent tear, or with a silly grin on ur face, he's that good. br"Heavier Things" is a great 2nd album which doesnt disapoint. "Room 4 Squares" was a difficult album to follow, but he has suceeded with flying colours.brBuy this album if u dare, tho I think you should buy Room 4 Squares before this one. Only so u can get aquainted whith his style. It took me a couple off plays to get into them both. your money will not be wasted buying this album, believe me!!

Having bought John's first album Room For Squares, my initial thoughts were that this follow up could never be as good as RFS.However,I have been proved wrong. This album marks a change in direction with more emphasis on the superb guitar solos and has definitely grown on me.It didnt take long!brMy highlights of the album are Bigger Than My Body which I defy ANYONE not to start singing along to the chorus!,Come Back To Bed a gorgeous tune with excellent guitar playing,Clarity, Daughters and Wheel.brIf you ever get the opportunity to see this man perform then go!I have had the privilege of seeing him three times in London and he is simply awesome live.Cant wait for the third album!

This album had great expectations weighing on it after such a superb debut LP Room For Squares. I found out about Mayer through a related search to dave matthews and decided to buy room for squares. Eversince i have been hooked on him and he is now my favourite artist although his Jazz influence is much of a first in my cd collection. Heavier things is a mixture of a couple of high tempo songs following from Mayer's original material, but with a bulk of much slower delicate songs like Something's missing, Come back to bed and Wheel. I have seen him live twice in the UK now and his performance blew me away. The band are great musically and Mayer himself is a brilliant guitarist, often just playin to the crowd by himslf with mindblowing rhythms. The slower more intimate tracks from heavier things were the highlight of two great gigs and do not be fooled by some reviews calling this album a disappointment. All of the great artists go through a change in style of music or it would get repeatable, this album is a must for any fan of good songwriting and will be a welcome addition to most collections.

after flicking through the music stantions on the tv i came across the music video for Bigger than my body, after listening to it I saw an advert advertising the album Heavier Things so i went out to buy it the day it came out, whilst listening to it i cant explain it but it felt as if he was singing it just to you directly. Every time i play it it makes me feel happier and it makes me smile just by listening to his voice and the words to the songs.

The first I ever heard of John Mayer was the track "Daughters". I liked it a lot. Then a friend of mine realised I had no John Mayer CDs and forced me to buy one.pI bought "Heavier Things" with no real expectations and played it. Instantly catchy, musical integrity, obvious talent, sharp lyrics. My dad and I agree: it's one of those albums that you come across just a few times in life where each track is absolutely cracking. pWhile the songs are singalong friendly, and no doubt the singles were huge on radio, there are some beautifully deep moments too "How come everything I think I need always comes with batteries?". This isn't throwaway pop trash, but it's not dreary and dry either.pIf you want an album of quality musicianship, shrewd songwriting and a set of tracks that won't let you down; this is it. It's a classic.
