Amazon.co.uk Review
For Britney Spears, IIn the Zone/I is more than just her fourth album; it's a pivotal moment which could decide the length of the rest of her career. Having literally outgrown the role of teen sensation, she now has to prove she's got what it takes to grow up and fulfil her Madonna-sized ambition. Adulthood calls for adult themes, and for Britney that means sex--and lots of it. In a staggering about-face, IIn the Zone/I takes her from vestal virgin to hyper-sophisticated nymphomaniac. The saucy Arabian shimmy and quietly euphoric chorus of "Toxic" has her delirious with carnal delight, "Showdown" is steamy cyber-funk lesson in how to tease, while "Touch of My Hand" is a none-to-discreet celebration of solo stimulation, with Britney purring to a swimming groove "I love myself, it's not a sin". Like single "Me Against the Music", featuring Madonna at her corruptive best, it's all a long way from the cute Britney of old, and if not as instantly catchy, her new direction is deceptively addictive. Less sensational RB fillers and a couple of slushy ballads aside, she's made the jump with style and grace, and it looks like Ms Spears could be with us for some time yet. I--Dan Gennoe/I

5 out of 5 stars These Reviews are spot on - Amazing Album   November 17, 2003
11 out of 11 found this review helpful

Britneys had some bad press recently, and personally I don't think she deserves it. She gets slated no matter what she does, so its a no win situation. She is constantly compared to Christina Aguilera and shouldn't be - They're both branching into their own styles and I think thats whats so good about this Album. pHere is a run down of the Songs.pMe Against the Music - You've probably heard this now, its so catchy. Its Britneys version of Christina's "Dirrty". This is going to be on in all the Clubs around the UK, its so good for dancing to with friends. Its a dancey song, you can't keep still. Its sexy and smooth and it features the amazing Madonna. What more could you want in a Song 9/10p(I got that) Boom Boom - Don't be fooled by the start of this. It starts a little slowly and your about to turn it onto the next song when Britney's voice comes in. It features some rap parts in by Ying Yang. I promise if you wait about a minute into the song it grows quickly. The Chorus is definately worth waiting for. Britneys voice is suited to the sexy, slower beat to this song 10/10pShowdown - This is another one that you have to stick with for it to get better. A original beat, this is quite different to everything else. Britneys breathy style is great for this type of song. Listen to the lyrics in this Song, they're clever "Here comes the Showdown, what comes around goes around" 9/10pBreathe on Me - This is a 'Kylie Minogue' style song and reminds me a little of 'Slow' I think this might have been produced by Kylies producers. Its slow and VERY breathy but it works for Britneys voice. The best way to describe this is to say its a mixture of Danii Minogue and Kylie Minogue 7/10pEarly Mornin - Not to sure on this Song, its not as catchy as the others. Its quite Urban rather than something you'd dance to. This is a slightly grown up Song for Britney, not completely sure if she pulls it off or not. Still I wouldn't say its awful, its a song that will grow on you 7/10pToxic - WOW! Another fast one. Remember Abs Song 'Miss Perfect', this sounds JUST like that to begin with. It has a fast beat and is fast paced, slightly Kylie Minogue towards the Chorus but the Chorus reminds me a little of Rachel Stevens. I think though, despite sounding 'Similar' to other people, you'd still know its Britney due to that distinctive voice. This is a clever song, its a bit of a gamble song but it works and she pulls it off 9/10pOutrageous - Written by R Kelly, I'm not surprised this is that sort of style song. Its a little like 'In Da Club' by 50 Cent. Big bass and smooth lyrics, the lyrics are a little explicit but it works for the song. I'm not that keen on this Song, I think its a bit 'Nasty' for Britney but I'm sure other people will like it 6/10pTouch of my Hand - How refreshing to see a Artist not be scared to try new styles. This has a Eastern beat to it in parts and is the closest thing you'd get to a 'Ballad' on this Album. This is a brilliant Track, I fell for it as soon as I heard it. I think its because I like anything Eastern, so it clicked for me 9/10pThe Hook Up - Some more rapping at the start of this, this is another 'Club' Song and something you'd dance to on a Saturday night. This has a slight R and B flavour to it I think its safe to say that its almost a Jamaican influenced Song. Listen to it and you'll see what I mean. Think Beyonce! 8/10pShadow - This is a 'Safe' Song, you always get some on a Album that are like this. Its slow and the best way to describe it, is that its like 'Background Music' you play when your doing things. The Chorus is better than the Verses and is more catchy and effective. Quite a slow song, listen to the Chorus which is worth the wait 8/10pBrave New Girl - So different to her usual style. This is a mixture, its hard to say what it sounds like. Its a little like a mix of Girls Aloud and Holly Valance but it has Britneys own spin on it. I've never heard her sing in this way before, its faster than she normally sings. Rather 80's Electric Disco is the words I'd use for the Verse, but when the Chorus kicks in it slightly becomes more 'Pop'. I can imagine this Song being on a Film 8/10pEverytime - Similar to the style of Mandy Moore and AS good if not better. Slightly Delta Goodrem as well, but in her own style. This is the only real 'Ballad' on the Album, beautiful words. I think this is the Song she penned for Justin Timberlake, if not then its been written about someone. This is a heartfelt song, Britney does seem to put a lot into this Song. Its so beautful "Everytime I try to fly without my Wings, I feel so small" I think this is one of her BEST ballads and she sings in a grown up way compared to her earlier music where her voice is slightly breaking 10/10pMe Against the Music/Remix - You normally get Remix vesions, I prefer the original but this is just been put on for a bit of fun. Has a slight Eastern/Arabian beat to it 6/10pThe Answer - Remember 'Bombastic' off her last Album? This could easily follow on from that. It sounds like a follow on, similar style. Great beat and toe tapping, this is a great Song. I wouldn't say its the best on the Album but its good 7/10pDon't Hang Up - I thought this would be a fast Song but its a medium tempo song. This reminds me of some of the Songs on her last Album, in between fast and slow. Another 'Safe' Song I think, not an exceptional one 8/10pOUTSTANDING TRACKS - Me Against the Music, (I Got That) Boom Boom, Toxic, Touch of my Hand, EverytimepAVERAGE TRACKS - Breathe on Me, Early Mornin', Shadow (Though the Chorus could be put into 'Outstanding Tracks' the Verse lets it down)pBELOW AVERAGE TRACKS - Outrageous (Sorry just didn't like this style on Britney, it doesn't completely suit her)pGood Tracks out of 15? I would probably say 12.pPhew! The one thing I would say about this Album is that its obvious Britney has been experimenting with different producers. Her styles are so varied in this Album, its rather different from her last Album and a million miles apart from her FIRST Album which was full of 'Pop'. Britneys grown up into a young woman who is experimenting with her image and her sexuality. Theres nothing wrong with that - In that sense she reminds me of a younger Madonna, always reinventing herself. This Album will do better than her last, it IS better than her last, it deserves 5 Stars.pAMAZING! STUNNING! GO BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars Me likes..   August 26, 2004

I bought this CD in the power of 'Everytime' and her duet with Madonna 'Me Against The Music'. I wasn't disapointed, it's a really good CD. I was worried that it would be filled with some weaker songs, but thats not the case.brI can't understand the people who feel the need to review her with comments like "Britney Spears eat my poo". I also like RatM, Ramnstein, etc. and it doesn't stop me from being able to appriciate this CD. All I have to say is open your mind and live and let live.

5 out of 5 stars She's Toxic!   January 18, 2004

I've always liked Britney in general, and although I do own all her albums, I'd never considered myself a major fan. I didn't rush out and buy the albums straight away (infact I only got her debut in 2003), and never have purchased all her singles/DVD's and so on. Simply put: I liked Britney's music quite a lot, and was interested in what she was doing career wise.pHowever, with "In The Zone", this has all changed. I am now a Britney fanatic, and with an album under her belt like this, I'm damn proud of it! Although not instantly loveable, by the third listen through of the CD, I was hooked. The thing that hits you the most is that while all songs on here could essentially be classified as pop songs, they are all eclectic and different from one another.p"Me Against The Music" is the funky lead off and easily one of the best songs of 2003. Catchy dance-pop, unlike anything else currently out there. This shows the Queen - Madonna, and the Princess - Britney, of Pop doing what they do best.p"I Got That Boom Boom!", "Showdown" and "The Hook Up" are catchy little rb numbers, all different and full of great hooks that'll keep them in your head all day. "Breathe On Me" is the best track on the album, a Kylie-esque dance number, however done with Britney's breathy vocals, which are actualyl stronger than Kylie's here, and with stunning production. A pure club stormer.p"Everytime" is the pick of the couple of ballads with its sweet sound, and follow up single "Toxic" is the best of the pure pop tracks of Britney doing what she does best.pIf you like Britney, check it out. If you just like pop music in general, this is one CD you need to have - Britney is on top of the charts and is the top of her game. "In The Zone" is gonna keep her there!

5 out of 5 stars Britney is BACK and IN THE ZONE!   February 7, 2004

This is an incredible album. The main thing that stands out for me are Britney's vocals. They are absolutely amazing...you have not heard what Britney has to offer to the world until you have heard this album. brYes, I am Britney fan but I can say what is good and what is bad. You won't be seeing "BRITNEY IS PERFECT! IT'S ALL GREAT!!!!!" from me. This review is my honest evaluation of this album for its music. pBy the way, Britney co-write seven of the twelve songs. pNow onto the songs! p1. Me Against the Music featuring Madonna brThis is a good dance track, with fast beats. The presence of Madonna adds nicely to the track (where Britney and Madonna sing together), though I am not that fond of her speaking parts. All my people on the floor, let me see you dance -- this track definitely makes you do that p2. (I Got That) Boom Boom featuring the Ying Yang Twins brI heard this song for the first time when Britney performed it on TRL on November 10th. At the beginning, the twins came out and becoming rapping. I was thinking...what is going on?! Finally, Britney came and began singing. pI really like this song. The beats and Britney's vocals are really good. pThe thing I dislike about this song are the Ying Yang Twins. I despise the parts of the song that they participate in. Don't get me wrong -- I can appreciate this type of music -- but all their random noises and their overall feel in this song are awful. I really think they shouldn't have been in this track. However, as harsh as it may seem, I simply ignore their presence in this song and focus on the parts where Britney is present and it turns into a really good song. pThe banjo rocks! It's very cool to see Britney singing this type of music...it really worked for her. p3. Showdown brNot my favorite track from the album but it is still okay. I think it could have been better -- I'm not really digging the beats and overall rhythm. However, toward the middle, it gets really good! I like that part. pThis is my least favorite track from the album but I like all the songs and thus, saying that a song is my least favorite isn't saying too much bad about the song. p4. Breathe On Me brOoh...it's so hot in here and I need some air! I really like this song. This song has a Kylie Minogue feel to it. It is very cool to see Britney be daring, attempting something different, vocally-wise, than what she normally does. Props for her because it works! At the end, instead of saying the word "breathe," she just breathes...I thought this was a very cute touch. Very sensual song. p5. Early Mornin' brYou can definitely feel Moby in this song. When I first started typing a review for this song, I began by saying "the vocals could have been stronger." However, I gave the song another listen. I no longer feel this way. The song talks about the night after partying and all...the way it is sung and was produced fits perfectly with the subject matter of the song. Britney also adds some spice to her voice that makes this song really nice to listen to. The talking part toward the end of the song...very good part that goes perfectly with the subject of the song as well. p6. Toxic brMy favorite track from the album! This is a semi-fast-paced, FUN song! Great vocals and beats with some playing around (in both categories). I can just totally picture myself blasting this song in my car when I'm on my road trip this summer! p7. Outrageous br...when I move my body! I like the repetition of the word Outrageous in this song. Again, the vocals are really good. Britney shows that she is definitely not a girl anymore! R Kelly did a nice job with the song. I just wanna be happy in a place where love is free! Can you take me there? Somebody? p8. Touch of My Hand brI will be bold...going to the places I can be out of control! The subject matter, of course, is masterbation. However, it is done very appropriately...so much to be one of my favorite tracks. The vocals, once again!, are very nicely. This song probably has the instrumentals/tunes that I like the most out of any song. Very soothing and calming. I love myself -- it's not a sin. p9. The Hook Up brAnother fun track with a reggae feel to it. This song's catchy beats will make you grab someone and begin dancing! I especially like the middle part of this song. Britney, once again, attempted something different and it worked really nicely. p10. Shadow brCan you say best.vocals.ever.? WOW! This is a gorgeous song. Britney really gives it her all and hits it perfectly. The vocals are incredible and it's a very soothing song. I love this song! I hope it is a single. p11. Brave New Girl brAnother fun song! I really like these fun songs on this album -- it gives the album a lot of variety. I agree with another reviewer on that it is a "cute, empowering" song -- definitely! However, I really like the bubbly, happy feeling to this song. This another song I can picture myself blasting in my car on my road trip in the summer! p12. Everytime brWhy are we strangers when our love is strong? Why carry on without me? Every time I try to fly, I fall...without my wings, I feel so small. I guess I need you, baby... Another song with really nice vocals. I think that there could been a little less music and a little more Britney -- this could have made it stronger. However, it's still a great track -- very good! p13. Me Against the Music -- (Rishi Rich's Desi Kulcha Remix brThis is just a remix of the first track on this album. It has Middle Eastern influences that work really nicely with the song -- nice remix!p14. The AnswerbrSounds surprisingly like I'm A Slave 4 U in certain parts but still a good song -- different vocals in some part from Britney, which makes this song a unique one. This is the track produced by P. Piddy.p15. Don't Hang UpbrAlso different compared to some of the other material. A fun song which many say is about phone sex. Good overall.pMy Final Thoughts pThere were a few tracks I disliked on ...Baby One More Time, Oops!...I Did it Again, and even a couple on Britney. I can honestly say that all songs on In the Zone are incredible and you will love this album! Music lovers of all genres will find something for them here. pI said this over and over in my review and I truly mean it -- Britney's vocals in In the Zone are INCREDIBLE and the songs (beats/tunes/etc) are GREAT. (Again, as stated, Britney co-write seven of the twelve new songs on this album.) pIn the words of a non-Britney fan after she heard a few songs off the album: brDang. I'm going to Have to buy it now -- her music has evolved and matured soo much. pShe has matured so much as a person and singer and her music has matured along with her. In the Zone is an absolutely fantastic album. pGet In The Zone now!p(Review by Dan1113)
