Amazon.co.uk Review
ISixty Six to Timbukto/I offers the listener two CDs worth of solo Robert Plant hits, key album cuts and obscurities, beginning with his vinyl debut in 1966 (a precocious cover of the Youngbloods' hit "You Better Run") and ending with a live version of "Win My Train Fare Home", recorded in the most famous city in Mali (hence the album title). pAficionados will head straight for disc two: although it's not comprehensive (it contains only one of Plant's four recordings from 1966), it's a bounty of rarities. While there's nothing from Plant's pre-Zeppelin combo "Hobbstweedle", the raw crackle of two "Band of Joy" cuts from 1967 (featuring John Bonham on drums) serves to remind us how much the White Stripes are indebted to the lion-haired lemon-squeezer from West Brom. And while there's plenty of interesting stuff collated from sources as diverse as film soundtracks (the rockabilly "Philadelphia Lady" from IPorky's Revenge/I, a ludicrous "Louie Louie" from that cinematographic masterpiece IWayne's World 2/I) and collaborations with Alexis Korner, Afro Celt Sound System and Jools Holland, one can only marvel at the generosity of a man who can place a song as superior as "Hey Jayne" on a B-side. pDisc one (hits and album tracks) is a more than useful meet-and-greet for the uninitiated. The earlier post-Zep material suffers from a thin 80s production (the tippy-tappy drums would have driven Bonzo Bonham bonkers) but the IFate of Nations/I stuff is great. "29 Palms" would have sounded positively regal if presented by Roy Orbison and British hit "Big Log" makes long-distance haulage seem as romantic as a noctural cruise along the Nile. --IKevin Maidment/I

5 out of 5 stars A superb special and waited collection of fine songs.   October 26, 2003

A superb special collection of 35 songs in 2 cd's, featuring the voice of one of the main singers in rock history. CD 1: features material from his solo albums; but CD 2: is full of rarities, bonus tracks, pre-zeppelin works with groups like Listen and Band of Joy and a live performance in Timbuktu. Sad, but no songs from the first solo Plant CD Pictures at eleven(Because I think "Like I've never been gone" is the best of the Plant's solo career), and no other hits like "In the mood" and "Other Arms"; The cd 1 contains "Big Log" from Principle of Moments; "Sea of Love" from Honeydrippers vol.1; "Little by Little" from Shaken and Stirred; "Heaven Knows; Tall cool one; Ship Of fools" from Now and Zen; "Tie dye on the highway" from Manic Nirvana; "Calling to you, 29 Palms; I believe; If I were a carpenter; Promise Land" from Fate of Nations; and "Darkness, Darkness; Song to the siren; Dirt in the hole" from last cd Dreamland. The rest are the "good news" of the track list: "Hey Jayne; Naked If I want to; 21 years"; 3 unreleased tracks: "Upside Down; Road to the sun; Red for Danger"; early tracks: "You'd better run; Hey Joe; For what's is worth; Operator"; a side project song recorded under the moniker Crawling Kingsnakes:"Philadelphia Baby"; special appearances: "Let's have a party; If it's really got to be that way; Rude World; Little Hands; Life begins again; Let that boogie woogie roll" and live performance in Timbuktu: "Win my train fare home". This cd sounds great, and worth to be part of your own collection. 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Why does Plant snub his first solo album?   November 9, 2003

A collection of Robert's solo work was well worth waiting for. The early pre Zeppelin stuff is excellent especially my favorite (which had many crackles on my vinyl version) 'Our Song'. The only thing Robert got wrong for me was the fact that no tracks from his first album made it onto this one. Surely there was room for Moonlight in Samosa?. Anyway that aside its a great collection that any fan would be proud of owning, with some previously unreleased material and an alternative version of 'I Believe'. One thing it does show is that like with Led Zeppelin, Robert's solo work has changed as the years have gone by, giving us something fresh each time. Thats why he is still Number One. Nice one...Cheers Robert.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Package of Material   December 7, 2003

Robert Plant's timing of the release of this material may have something to do with the success of the Zep DVD, but hey...why not...especially when the music is this good. Songs from his latest DREAMLAND album, along with all his solo earlier works on disc One. Disc Two is the real revelation though - some early sixties and seventies stuff he did when finding his feet and before Zep. That distinctive voice shines through on all of the songs, and the blues influence is clear to see. An excellent collection - very highly recommended.

What a superb album! Robert Plant's pre-LedZep tracks are truly original, particularly "Hey Joe" which is simply mesmerising. A wonderful addition to your CD collection.
