Amazon.co.uk Review On her second album, IFolklore/I, Nelly Furtado takes a hard left turn. The colourful but incomplete fusion of her debut, IWhoa, Nelly!/I, gives way on this tellingly titled record to an approach that lets in some acoustic sounds which take the music in an entirely different, richer direction. At times sounding like a dead ringer for singer-writer Sam Phillips (whose work colours each episode of the American television series IGilmore Girls/I), Furtado aims for more rock-oriented ground without losing the Brazilian influences that are so much a part of her identity. Her voice and tunes are strong, and both words and music paint a picture of a young woman still very much in movement, change, flux. It's an intriguing sound, and one that thoughtful listeners will cherish. I--Rickey Wright/I

Stunning! February 26, 2004 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
How do you follow up an album as widely acclaimed as Whoa Nelly? Like thispFolklore showcases a more mature collection of songs which see Furtado dipping deep into her portugese roots for inspiration. Folklore is made up of 12 new tracks and has guest appearances from Caetano Veloso and Jarvis ChruchpOne Trick Pony - This is a wonderful introduction to the album, opening with an epic strings arrangement from the Kronos Quartet. It then bursts into a wonderful pop song where Furtado sings about how she's different. A bit cliche, but the music and her vocals make up for itpPowerless - The First single from the album, a beautiful mix of Banjos and breakbeats. The song, attacking the media and its inclination to misrepresent its subjects is harsh and endearing at the same time. Her vocals are so powerful and harsh, as is the breakbeat. But at the same time she sings with passion and the banjo accompaniment makes it a feel good song.pExplode - Rumoured to be the Third single released. Furtado sings about her teenage years, and she herself has likened it to 1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins. Featuring Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger, this is a dark, in-your-face song about the teenage years. A well structured songpTry - The second single released from Folklore. This is a beautiful ballad which truly showcases her vocal talent. It starts an acoustic ballad and slowly it propels itself into a ballad full of emotion. Furtado's vocals towards the end of the song are truly amazing. The song is about the reality of love and that its not all perfect, but you have to roll with the punches.pFresh off the boat - Jazzy vocals and and old skool vibe. She stretches her voice to the heights of nasality as she sings about how immigrants deal with their arrival in a new country. The song switches between english and portugese to convey how such an immigrant in truly a part of two different cultures. If you're sucker for a beat this song will have you movingpForca - Nelly was commissioned to write a song for Euro2004. This is the result a banjo driven anthem featuring Bela Fleck on the banjo. Another song which features the portugese language. Close your eyes when you listen, you can't help but envision football stadiums chanting the chorus! pGrass is green - Ear pleasingly simple. Furtado sings about how we all lust after what we can't have. This is a mid tempo song where Furtado sings so passionately in the chorus. Check the bridge of the song, it is beautifulpPicture Perfect - Continuing the immigrant theme, Furtado sings a bluesy number. The soft verses carry the listener through to a series of epic choruses where Furtado sings "Please bring me along" each syllable complimented by the thrash of a cymbal. A guitar driven song featuring a simple bluesy piano solo.pSaturdays - This is folk. Recorded in one take, Furtado plays the guitar and sings about her days as a chamber maid. Featuring the gospel-like vocals of Canadian Solo artist Jarvis Church the song finds pace and gives you a true taste of Nelly Furtado, towards the end of the song she begins to laugh, but continues the recording.pBuild you up - Showing a nice range of vocals surrounded by relatively simple music. This allows the listener to focus on the songs message about how people have a tendance to "Build you up only to tear you down" pIsland of Wonder - Produced by Nelly Furtado's boyfriend, this is a lush and addictive arrangement of beats and percussion. With a guest appearance of Brazillian legend Caetano Veloso, he and Furtado switch the assumed gender roles as he sings the high notes, while she takes the low ones.pChildhood Dreams - A beautiful song. The moving introduction is played on a church organ, and the song then transcends into a simple ballad played on the harp. Here Furtado sustains haunting, stunning vocals. The longest song of the album at over 6 minutes as the song finds power at the end - this love song is a beautiful way to end the albumpBonus Track - Try Acoustic - Similar to the original, but instead featuring accompaniment from the Kronos Quartet, recorded in one take this is an opportunity to hear Furtado's live vocals. Every bit as beautiful as the original.pThe CD also includes a promotional, limited edition of the Powerless video and access to a secret website where there is a competition to see Nelly live and over 15 minutes of video footage from her 2002 Burn in the Spotlight tour.pIn all this a welcome return of Nelly Furtado, a heartfelt collection of songs each bringing you something new and different. This lady is truly doing her thing.
Simply: Natural, Simple, Original, Nelly... December 1, 2003 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
It is just a beautifull and soft album. Of course you can identify some aspects in the songs in this cd with nelly herself.brBut in my point of view the most cool thing in this album is: seeing the growing of nelly furtado, since she had the child, she gives more attention to the human questions, and that we can see in their songs like: explode, buil you up...brIs just amazing how versatile she can be, but the coolest thing is also her originality that you can see in saturdays (when she laguhs in the song).Comparing this album with the Woah nelly, i think both have their beauty and their own spirit. brMy favorite songs in this album are: fresh up the boat (5) she ends with the portuguese language wich is interesting and exotic, and it has also a traditional portuguese folk influences; Força (portuguese) wich means strength and give us a idea: don't give up, don't stop, go; Childwood Dreams is the last one is just beautifull and melodic song very similar to Madredeus style (portuguese group, very known). Well what am i saying???????? just buy this album it is worth it, you will grow in terms of music , trust me....
The Canadian with a Portuguese soul is back! November 19, 2003 Elisabete Rodrigues (Lisbon, Portugal) 15 out of 19 found this review helpful
Nelly Furtado is back! After her great debut album "Whoa Nelly" it the stores and introduced a new powerful voice from Canada, Nelly is back with a new, stronger and more vibrant piece of work:"Folklore". The first single,"Powerless(say what you want)", is a great song that shows that the vibe of this album is different from the previous one. In "Folklore" the songs and Nelly's voice are amazing, proving that this album is a definite step forward in this young artists'career.pp.s.Nelly comes from a Portuguese background not Brazillian as is said in the amazon review.
FORCA! December 16, 2003 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This album is unbelievable, I almost urge you to stop reading this review right now and buy the thing this instant, but stick with me a bit.brNelly's first album (Whoa, Nelly!) was an instant hit, and is still one of my favourites to this day, I hadn't heard any of the tracks from her new album before I bought it, and for me to buy an artists album on the strength of a previous album alone is rather daunting, but I gritted my teeth and went with it, and man I am so glad I did. Folklore is quite simply a work of genius, Nelly has shyed away from the mainstream pop tracks that were on the first album, I dare say that those tracks were insisted upon my the record execs to ensure good sales, she has also toned down a little on the Portugese influence too, again I think the execs were trying to hit two markets at once. But that is not to say that Nelly has ditched her roots altogether, not at all - this album is all about her roots, it's a beautiful insight into her life, her past, present and her family's history.brNelly is a remarkable songwriter, her lyrics are a fusion of simplicity and depth, English and Portugese, meshed into one, and rounded off with an eclectic mix of guitars, banjos (yes banjos - but trust me, if there is anyone that can get away with a banjo in a song it's Nelly), strings, organs....... I could go on.brThe songs themselves are all beautiful, and compliment one another brilliantly. I could comment on all of them, but I will just mention my three favourites - The opening track "One trick pony" is lovely and upbeat, with a gorgeous sweeping strings intro. "Forca" (which is Portugese slang for Go!) is a real anthem, and will have you stamping your feet and singing along. And finally "Childhood Dreams", quite possibly my favourite song of all time, this is a really heartfelt love song, it oozes emotion, the lyrics are beautiful - recorded in an old church using the organs as an intro, Nelly starts off gently with just a guitar and her amazing voice, and building to a soaring anthemic finish - stunning!brNelly really did have fun making this album and is not afraid to show it - she stumbles over several lyrics whilst laughing on "Saturdays" (a beautiful, simple duet with Jarvis Church about her days spent helping her mother with her cleaning job at a motel), you can tell that it is exactly the album she wanted to make, whereas I feel Whoa, Nelly! was only 60% her and the rest forced upon her. To enjoy this album to it's fullest, I strongly recommend visiting Nelly's website to see what she means and feels about each song and the album as a whole. It really is a very thought provoking album, and Nelly touches on many issues that have been a big part of her life, including racism and poverty, but she is in no way negative and uses the power of great writing to get the message across simply and beautifully.brNelly has one of the most beautiful voices around, almost feline at times, and I mean that in a good way. In the last few years she has matured and her songwriting is testament to that.brBuy this album.brForca!
Amazing!!! May 21, 2005 Iris Tully (London, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this album because I've got "Woah Nelly", and I absoloutely adore it. "Folklore" is sufficiently different, but still just as good. brIts one of the best albums I have ever heard, and in my opinion, some of the best tracks are "the grass is green" and "build you up". brNelly Furtado somehow gets an excellent combination of Folk-y sounds, mixed with more rock-ish music, with rythms that make you want to get up and dance.brWords can't express how great this album is. Buy it!
