Those who know Jack Johnson only as college radio fave are in for a pleasant surprise here, as are wave-riding aficionados with a taste for eclectic, cooled-out musical vibes. The project ISurfer/I magazine hailed as 2000's Video of the Year was originally a collaboration between surfing champ/then-USC film student Johnson and school colleagues Chris and Dan Malloy. But Johnson also gratifyingly took the opportunity to prove that "surf music" is purely a subjective term; indeed, electric instruments are few and far between here, let alone the traditional buzzsaw licks of such genre stalwarts as Dick Dale and Gary Hoey. Instead, Johnson has stitched together an organically focused, acoustic-centered collection that would seem as welcome on a shady creek bank as a sunny, wave-lapped beach. Johnson offers up an acoustic take of his sophomore album's "Holes to Heaven" and the sprightly instrumentals "Moonshine" and "Cove," while longtime associate G. Love duets on the spare, rootsy "Rainbow." Love and band Special Sauce also contribute the even grittier instrumental "Hobo Blues" and laconic "Honor and Harmony." But its also a collection that ventures as far afield as The Meters' 70's-funky "Liver Splash"., Finley Quaye's spare soul, the folk-raga of Kalyanji/Anadji's "My Guru" and the spacey, haunting "Dark Water and Stars" by Natural Calamity. This CD is an excellent compilation of some excellent artists. All artists have the same kind of style as Jack Johnson so, Jack fans, this one is for you. Songs with Jack and G Love are especially good. It includes a different version on Jack's song "Holes to Heaven" which is very good and all together it is a good chill out CD. It is highly recomended with his other CDs.

great album, set me off on to other artists. all just chilled jazzy grooves basically, its similar to the soundtrack for jacks' film "september sessions". i'd say get it if you enjoy laid back easy listening stuff by Jack, G. love or reggae inspired stuff like finley quay.

While I say good ol Jack this is not quite what you get from brushfire fairytales and on and on (it#x27;s more balanced, introducing artists whose music all blends wonderfully well and less samey). What I mean by good ol#x27; Jack is that this is yet another fantastically relaxed and mellow collection of songs which when accompanied by a beer as the sun sets on a sunny afternoon creates just the right atmos!

This is a great chilled out album featuring Jack Johnson and friends, being the soundtrack to the DVD of the same name (a must if you love the surfing lifestyle).

br /However, this is not to be confused with his later 'commercial' albums, and if you are stuck very firmly in your groove then this is probably not for you. But if you enjoy chilling on the beach watching the sun go down then this would make a great soundtrack to your beach bbq. If you love the openess of live music, welcome the opportuntiy to discover new artists and have a laid-back attitude then you should give this a try. Just as enjoyable as any of Jack's other albums, and should also appeal to those who enjoy the likes of Ben Harper, Finley Quaye, Foy Vance, etc.

After loving Jack Johnsons 'Brushfire Fairytales' and 'On and On', I was keen to explore his work further by buying this- the soundtrack to Johnson's film of the same name. While it's a pretty solid CD with some decent Jack tracks, it doesn't compare with either of his studio albums. It's still better than the majority of soundtracks around, but I'd recommend it for the JJ hardcore only. Perhaps one of his studio albums would be a better place to start your collection?!brAnyway- still a relaxing collection of tunes worth a listen and with worthy G Love offerings to complement more of the same from Jack Johnson.
