Amazon.co.uk Review
Prior to the release of IAmerica's Sweetheart/I, the media backlash against Courtney Love was in full swing. To be fair, Ms Love is a difficult celebrity to like--she's the screechy, indie-rock Madonna: singing, acting, courting the media and annoying the right wing. Critics have questioned her decision to release IAmerica's Sweetheart/I at the same time as former Hole bandmate (and current rock pin-up) Melissa Auf der Maur, but they seem to be overlooking one obvious fact--Courtney Love is a far better singer and songwriter. She picks up pretty much where the last Hole album, ICelebrity Skin/I, left off, delving further into the radio-friendly territory that that album had trailblazed with songs such as the anthemic first single "Mono". Mostly, she's left the grunge behind (though "I'll Do Anything" cheekily borrows a well-known riff from her deceased husband's band) and concentrated on the glitter and the gloss (Hole fans may find it a bit Itoo/I polished). It lacks most of the raw intensity of her best work with Hole, but those songs were about teenage rebellion, anger and angst--Love's smart enough to realise that, at her age, that just doesn't work (a fact she recognises on the brilliantly titled and targeted "But Julian, I'm a Little Bit Older than You"). Courtney Love has grown up ("Uncool" is, appropriately, cowritten with Elton John lyricist Bernie Taupin), and she sold out a long time ago (nine of the tracks here are cowritten with hitmaker Linda Perry), but that's okay. You don't have to like Courtney Love the celebrity to enjoy IAmerica's Sweetheart/I the album. I--Robert Burrow/I

5 out of 5 stars America's Sweetheart   February 13, 2004

I started to listen to this album with the view that it would be in a similar vein to that of 'Celebrity Skin'. The only song on 'America's Sweetheart' that really resembles this is 'Hold On To Me' and this is no bad thing as the song itself is good. But I didn't want this album to cover too much old ground and Courtney does not disappoint. pSingle 'Mono' the perfect opener, introduces Courtney's unmistakeable voice snarling over catchy and rugged riffs.p'Almost Golden' and 'Life Despite God' provides the lyrical poetry that Courtney does so well, entwined in a soft but raw sound. pFor me, the weakest song on the album is 'Uncool'. It doesn't have Courtney's stamp on it and just seems to drift along.pMost striking of all is a more light, humourous tone on 'Zeplin Song' and 'But Julian, I'm a Little Bit Older Than You' which had previously gone undetected on her past albums. This, I found to be the most refreshing difference and just proves that Courtney Love is far from all doom and gloom.p'America's Sweetheart' has become an instant favourite of mine and Courtney Love and this album certainly deserves a lot more credit than they have been getting recently.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great album, believe me, completely underrated.   July 10, 2005

Firstly, i loved Hole, and this album is up there with Holes great albums. This is a really underrated album in my opinion. There are no "fillers" either. Courtney gets a raw deal all the time - people should just leave her alone - she's great. This is a really cool album. I love every track, especially "Uncool", thats my fave. Also, check out the UK release of the Mono single, as there are some cool b-sides. I loved Hole's Celebrity Skin, plus the others, but this is definately up there with Celebrity Skin, definately, go buy it, you won't regret it, i promise.

If comparing this record with Hole#8217;s work, it does fall slightly short, lacking in the poetic lyrics which made Hole magnificent. However this is not Hole, it#8217;s Courtney, and it is important to separate the two. pThe album starts with #8216;Mono#8217;, a loud rockish song, commenting on the state of rock today (#8216;and they say that rock is dead/and they#8217;re probably right#8217;) with a catchy chorus that#8217;ll have you humming along whether you want to be or not. #8216;But Julian#8217; is a jokey punk song; the kind which will leave the listener with a smile, showing Courtney#8217;s crazy, though no doubt amusing side. pThe next track which is probably the best on the album, is a kick in the teeth to all those who claim Courtney can#8217;t write her own songs, as the lyrics and music were written solely by her. It#8217;s a beautiful ballad, with touching lyrics sang in a brilliantly emotional way by Courtney. The following track; Sunset Strip shows that although this record is much happier than her previous work she#8217;s still in pain. The album contains several emotional, touching ballads including #8216;Uncool#8217; and #8216;Never Gonna be the Same#8217; which is a perfect ending to the record, and the lyrics as well as the tenderness they#8217;re sung with can cause the listener to feel quite emotional. pThere#8217;s plenty of faster songs, namely All the Drugs and Life Despite God, the latter one can come as a shock on first listen and requires subsequent listenings to really #8216;get#8217; it. pA great thing about this album is it really doesn#8217;t fit into a genre; it has everything and is being enjoyed by fans of Hole#8217;s grungy Pretty on the Inside to people who prefer a more mainstream type of music. The lyrics may not be as great as Hole#8217;s, but you can tell they are written with feeling; you can see what Courtney#8217;s been dragged through, and admire her for surviving. pAs with all good albums, America#8217;s Sweetheart takes a few listens to really appreciate, if you#8217;ve listened to it once and been disappointed give it another go, you#8217;ll be surprised. There is depth here which only comes out from repeated listens and some beautiful melodies. This might not be Hole but it#8217;s still powerful, it#8217;s Courtney Love.

5 out of 5 stars Courtney Love's best album yet!   February 11, 2004

This album is very good. Its different to the rock music that has been in the mainstream. It is very refreshing to listen to and all the songs are well written. It is different to Hole, but there is still the original sound that Hole always had. I think people will enjoy this album.

I was so glad to hear My all time favourite musician was returning with a new album:Courtney love - Americas Sweetheart...And yes we have missed you!Her first single Mono totally rocks,Catchy lyrics,Great guitar hooks and a rough "I smoke 20 cigarettes in 10 minutes" voice and a cool video to go along with it but her album.Courtneys style of music has defiantly changed. The tracks that stand out for me are "Hold on to me","Uncool","Life despite god"Why does everyone hate that song?!,"Ill do anything" and "Hello".Other really cool tracks youll find are "But julian im a little bit older than you" and "Never gonna be the same".I have to abmit that "Sunset strip" is good dont get me wrong and the lyrics rock but it drags on a bit."Almost Golden" Is good but is easily lost in the album and "Zeplin song" Just washes over you really.I have listened to "Fly" also and it SHOULD have been put on this one and not just the Japanese one.Cos that song rocks.Well thats my thoughts. If your a fan youll probly just feel compelled to buy it anyway but i do think you should buy it even if you have just heard "Mono" and "Hold on to me".
