Beautiful April 9, 2005 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
There must be something about this album and York as I also heard this in a shop in York. Carla Bruni's voice is beautiful and this album is great to listen to when you want to sit back and relax. Don't be put off by the fact that all the songs are in French, the music will carry you away and you'll soon forget that this is not in English.
More of the same please September 27, 2006 Margaret York (Lot Velley, France) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Just bought this CD today having decided to listen to French music to enhance my learning of the language. What a pure delight her voice is, further complemented by the lovely music. Made my 3-hour drive more pleasurable. If you're thinking of buying this, don't hesitate.
Lovely surprise... January 9, 2007 D. Martin (Sheffield, UK) 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
I'm a great fan of this album... I got hold of it initially completely by mistake in low quality MP3 format - just some files on an SD card I was borrowing. I had a listen to them and thought it was worth a punt. I love it now... Carla Bruni's voice sounds like some strange cross between Kathleen Turner, Norah Jones and Cerys Matthews - but it's better than them all 'cos it's speaking Froggie - ze language of lurrve!

br /Getting a bit more serious... there's some real good songs on this CD. My personal favourites are: Le Toi Du Moi, seemingly her singing to her man that they're everything that goes together or everything that is opposite... "You're the lemon, I'm the zest, you're the tea, I'm the packet"... and L'Excessive - a lovely song where she seems to be apologising for going off the walls with love... going a bit mental and trying to explain that she understands it's excessive and inexplicable... but still happens. Carla Bruni can carry a tune well... and the songs are very pleasant to listen to, almost relaxing. Surprised me, considering her background... kind of reminded me of Nico a la Velvet Underground.

br /Oh, she also appears to be a bit of a fox... always helps.

br /My girlfriend is learning beginner's French at the moment - she loves playing this in the car... hard to get the majority of it of course just by listening, but the more you hear the easier it will be... we hope.

Yes get this initial CD only version but the version to get from Amazon.fr (France) is the special edition with a bonus DVD not available in the UK.
Just beautiful. August 8, 2007 Mister Kite (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
So glad a chance read through a friends old copy of the Observer Music Monthly led me to check out Carla Bruni. Who'd have thought it - a beautiful supermodel here found making even more beautiful music.

br /Of course it helps to have some romantic love for things French - but this is a thing of beauty that should entrance so many more too. Carla has a great sounding, characterful, rich voice, not only helped by the fact that she is using one of the most beautiful sounding languages in the world, but also by the fact that she is singing songs laden with hooks, texture and wonderful intimate, sparkling production.

br /The arrangements of the guitars - both nylon and steel string used here - behind the vocals is just as sublime - some great lead steel guitar parts. Yes, I do hear some similarities with Norah Jones' band and some of her songs too, and I loved the first Norah album. This has the same spell as that first Norah album had, before it became so huge and overplayed.

br /It's become my album of the summer, and goes well with things like the Divine Comedy, Bebel Gilberto and Nick Drake - those albums that are a treat to your ears and open your soul.
