Amazon.co.uk Review
IFly or Die/I, the second album from NERD is, irritatingly, not quite what you want and never quite what it seems. That's not to say it isn't occasionally brilliant, just a little taxing on the grey matter and something of an eccentric folly. If you're looking for the pop accessibility they produce as the Neptunes, frustration may force you to wish you'd never been swayed by all that hip rhetoric. p Of course, Pharrell Williams is a star in his own right and can croon like the best, so it would be churlish for him to omit a crowd pleaser or two. Hence the spaced-out "She Wants to Move", a funk-rock belter that contains the line "Her ass is a spaceship I want to ride". The rest of the album feels awkward, drawing on a confusing roll call of influences, including prog rock, the Beatles and Hendrix. But there's wheat amongst the psychedelic chaff: "Wonderful Place" stands out a mile as the best thing on here, a slice of toasted soul baguette that's as heavenly as manna. Often infuriating, yet never predictable, NERD shine when they get it right. Just forgive them their youthful indulgence, if that's what it takes. I--Paul Tierney/I

5 out of 5 stars Fly or Die. Fly or Die? Definitely Fly.   March 28, 2004

-br"N.E.R.D stands for No One Ever Really Dies. N.E.R.D is not The Neptunes. N.E.R.D is the offspring of the Neptunes id, a fly-or-die, thrash-around."brPharrell Williams - one third of the group called N.E.R.D.pA short excerpt from a conversation with a friend:brMe: Who's that guy that features on Justin Timberlake's track Senorita?brMy friend: Pharrell WilliamsbrMe: Is he a solo artist?brMy friend: Not really, he is a member of a couple of groups, one called The Neptunes and the other N.E.R.DbrMe: Who are The Neptunes?brMy friend: Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams - they were old high school friends.brMe: Who are nerd?brMy Friend: Not nerd. N, E, R, D. N.E.R.D are Chad Hugo, Pharrell Williams and Shay Thornton - another of their high school friends.brMe: Oh...(while scratching my head)pAs I mentioned above, I first heard of Pharrell Williams when he featured on a track with Justin Timberlake. I was impressed by both Pharrell's vocals and the fact that he had produced not only a few of Mr JT's tracks but also tracks and albums for other artists (including a young lady called Britney Spears!) under the guise of a group called the Neptunes consisting of him and his long-time friend Chad Hugo. I am always curious what the producers of other peoples music have to say with their own music (e.g. like Kenny Edmonds aka Babyface - the producer of soul) but I still wavered as to whether this warranted me forking-out hard cash for their album. But, on hearing their first single from the album, 'She Wants To Move'... I hesitated no longer. Amazon. Add To Basket. Proceed To Checkout. Confirm. Your order has been dispatched.pAs soon as the album, 'Fly or Die', arrived through the post I placed it straight into my CD player. The first thing I noticed were the guitars. The sounds of the guitars on this album are amazing. Listening to some of the tracks, you could be forgiven for thinking you are listening to the riffs of the guitar-great, Jimi Hendrix. But, guess what? Your instincts would be right...sort of... because guess who appears on Track 11- 'The Way She Dances'? Lenny Kravitz, an unashamedly self-confessed Jimi Hendrix-influenced artist if ever there was one! However, the instruments are not the only things that impressed me on this album. Pharrell's vocals (my initial introduction to N.E.R.D) did not disappoint - they were...sorry...ARE... superb!pAfter having listened to the album once, I was bowled over. I just played it again straight away. One track that stood out for me in particular was the addictively catchy 'Drill Sergeant' (track 8). Very catchy (as in 'Blur's Song 2'-catchy)! But, I am sure that if you play the other songs long enough they will soon be playing in your head just as much. A word to the wise, when Track 12 finishes... wait. In fact, wait for exactly 4minutes 16seconds into the song... yes, folks... a hidden track. And, what a track, in fact anthem is more accurate a description. Absolutely fantastic. When I listen to any of the tracks afterwards I definitely feel a lot more upbeat and optimistic which on closer inspection of the album is not surprising what with the first track called 'Don't Worry About It', another track (track 7) called 'Wonderful Place', and with lyrics such as: 'Stuff (...or a word to that effect!) happens. Just blow it off'. This is definitely an album that does not want you to waste time worrying about life!pThe tracks on this album are not unlike the tracks The Neptunes produce - cool, catchy, and clever tunes that are sure to brighten up any day...brHighly Recommended. pDuration: 54minutes 57secondsbrNumber: 12 Tracks (11 and 1 hidden) brPS Check out the website (www.n-e-r-d.com). Pharrel Williams' ethos behind the band in the biography section is nothing short of inspiring. You'll get a lot more info about the band and their music than I can cram in here!brWhatever album you decide to buy. I hope it is the right one for you.

I just got this album today! OMG i was so shocked! i didn't think it would be that good in comparison to "In Search Of.." but i was proved wrong! It is definately as good as, and maybe even better! A few of my favourites are "Fly or Die", "Jump", "The Way She Dances" (Brilliant!) "Drill Sergeant"-good to dance to! "Breakout" and "Maybe" are also good! I find it hard to pick out my favourites as they are all amazing. Trust me, buy this album! You can't really go wrong with Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo! They have so much talent! I hope there is much more to come! You will not be dissapointed!

5 out of 5 stars N*E*R*D's "Fly Or Die" - WOW!   March 4, 2004

All I can say is WOW! I just heard an advance copy of N*E*R*D's "Fly Or Die" and it is gonna be the album 0f 2004. This is by far one of my favorite CDs of all time. I was skeptical when I first bought this album thinking that the songs would all sound the same and they were just a bunch of tracks The Neptunes couldn't give other artists. I also didn't think that it would be as good as their 1st album, the awesome "In Search Of..". Man was I wrong! You never know what to expect with each song on this CD and that's what makes it so unique. I have to give much respect to Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo for their incredible talent. Not only can these two make hits for just about anyone in the music industry, they can also make really good music for themselves. If you thought the Neptunes/N*E*R*D were big already, they are just about to blow up big style. This is the Album of 2004!!! Thats all i need to say.

The first N*E*R*D album (In Search Of...) is the most perfect blending of conventional Rock, Soul and Hip-Hop I think I've heard. The Hip-Hop elements providing the true genius, as the Neptune's (Pharrell and Chad Hugo's other musical sideline) have astounding production talents in that field. Most crossover acts tend to move from Rock to Hip-Hop traditionally; because of the up hill struggle that learning to play an instrument presents. The Beastie Boys managed it years ago and successfully reinvented themselves. However, N*E*R*D are far more believable for Hip-Hop fans. They've reversed engineered the trend and migrated from Hip-Hop to Rock on Fly or Die. The down side for fans of the first album is there's far less of a Hip-Hop vibe on the latest album, but the songs are original and inspiring. Highly recommended for anyone looking for something a little different, up beat and extremely funky.

Ever since I got their "I Search Of ... " album I have been curious, curious to see how they could following that kind of sonic quality. So when informed of "Fly Or Dies" immenent release, palms became sweaty and I realised - I had the munchies for n*e*r*d.pI wasn't disappointed, this is pure gold. From the start you know this is gonna be good. They start as they mean to go on with a driving bass line that just makes you nod you head and before you know it your restarting the CD because you know what they say, time flys when your having fun!pstand out songs - Fly Or Die, Wonderful Place and Thrasher. I played it at work and even the rockers liked it. Nuff Said.
