Amazon.co.uk Review
There's absolutely nothing subliminal about Slipknot's third album, IVol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses)/I. No, the anger and frustration is pretty much at the forefront throughout the 14 tracks here. But this isn't just blind rage on display--the nine masked men of Slipknot sound more focused than ever, all because they manage to broaden their sound. Best of all, they display a profound awareness of hard rock's heritage and their place within it (helped in no small part by the direction of legendary producer Rick Rubin). pIVol. 3/I has hints of Slayer's speed metal (right down to the double-time guitar solo in "Welcome") and Nine Inch Nails' sweeping and meticulously-constructed epics (and, in particular, IThe Downward Spiral/I). They even show that they're capable of exercising restraint, applying a delicate touch to the string-laden "Circle" and the piano and acoustic-guitar-led "Vermilion Pt. 2". Mostly, though, IVol. 3/I is an organic industrial metal album, mixing sampled sounds and beats with real, rapid-fire drumming and split-second riffing. There's a lot going on here, even on tracks with silly names such as "Pulse of the Maggots". It probably doesn't do them any favours to say that Slipknot are cleverer than they look. But, on IVol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses)/I they prove themselves cleverer than most of their peers. Quite simply, this is an exceptional metal album. I--Robert Burrow/I

5 out of 5 stars The Mature Comeback   May 22, 2004

You'll either like Vol. 3, or you won't. It is as simple as that. If what you like about Slipknot, is its hate fuelled aggression, packed with swearing, and shocking lyrics, Vol. 3 is not for you. "Slipknot" and "Iowa" would be your better choice, but Vol. 3 is the new and improved Slipknot. It hides away from the typical nu-metal scene that floods our TV screens. With suprisingly good use of melody, and song structure, and even decent guitar solos, at last! This is what "modern heavy metal" (as metal-mutha from Edinburgh's review, well classified it) should sound like. Definate reflections of Stone Sour, it was like listening to Stone Sour's next album. Though you Murderdolls fans won't find any "Love At First Fright" on Vol. 3. The help of a legendery producer Rick Rubin has saved Slipknot, and many other bands. Slipknot HAVE NOT sold out. Rick now to save Metallica please!!!pgmcourtney2k2 from South Wales review well describes each of the tracks, if you are looking for description on each of the tracks. By the way if you are confused, yes "Don't Get Close" isn't on Vol. 3.

This version of Vol. 3 is too good, its worth spending a little extra money to buy this special edition. As it doesn#x27;t tell you here, the track listings are as follows:pDisc 1:p1.preludebr2.the blister existsbr3.three nilbr4.dualitybr5.opium of the peoplebr6.circlebr7.welcomebr8.vermilionbr9.pulse of the maggotsbr10.before I forgetbr11.vermilion pt.2br12.the namelessbr13.the virus of lifebr14.danger - keep awaypDisc 2:p1.don#x27;t get closebr2.screambr3.vermilion (terry date mix)br4.danger - keep away (full-length version)br5.the blister exists (live)br6.three nil (live)br7.disasterpiece (live)br8.people = sh*t (live)pI would recommend this to anyone and everyone, the second disc is truly amazing, the bonus studio tracks (don#x27;t get close scream) should have been on the regular album to show how great they are. The extra live tracks just prove how amazing the performance they put on is, I have seen them live and it was definatly my favourite concert so far(and ive been to few). On the main part of the album you#x27;ll find some of Slipknots classics (duality, before I forget pulse of the maggots) and other tracks containing some of the best drumming I have ever heard with awesome lyrics to go with it not to mention corey taylors great singing voice (shown best on vermilion pt.2 I feel).pOnly thing left to say is - BUY THIS ALBUM, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT

5 out of 5 stars Amazing album the best slipknot yet   May 14, 2004

having just finished listening to this album about 20 times already im going to be reviewing each track:br1-prelude 3.0:totally different knot dont expect a rage fuelled opener like 742617000027 or (515) this is a far more matured and melodic knot sounds at times like tool it remnds me aswell of pink floyd.5 starsp2-the blister exists:total knot style song definately my favourite from this album percussion heavy song clearly defined instruments, and the marching snare drum is awesome.5 starsp3-three nil: rage fuelled song typical knot again good song. 4 starsp4-duality: weve all heard it, definately the single of the album ,out of all the album this reminds me of the old knot the most, very melodic chorus. 5 starsp5-opium of the people: i love this song, catchy chorus kinda reminds me of iowa's the shape if rick rubin had his hands on it first. nice guitar work. 5 starsp6-circle: this is where the old knot sound has left the building more like a slipknot unplugged song! acoustic knot who woulda thought it. but still has the slipknot sound with its creepy sound effects to open and close again another pink floyd feel love the string work. 5 starsp7-welcome: reminds me of iowa and s/t rolled into one maybe its me but i feel as if this reminds me of mudvayne's internal primates forever with slipknots style thrown in(i.e percussion, samples and guitar work). 4.5 starsp8-vermillion: i love this song very gothic, different knot again very melodic best chorus from slipknot ive heard, nice solo. 5 starsp9-pulse of the maggots: another war type feel song, heavy metal definately.craig and sid shine on this song. 5 starsp10-before i forget: different knot again very melodic chorus has a punky feel. 4 starsp11-vermilion part 2: kinda reminds of incubus's mexico, obviously another acoustic but again very good. 5 starsp12-the nameless: this is a masterpiece from the knot its amazing brutal as hell then corey goes into an acapella sounding like a chorus from an unreleased backstreet boys song then back into brutality knot, percussion is amazing, its a different knot but a masterpiece none the less. 5 starsp13-the virus life: feels again like a pink floyd for a new generation with marilyn manson onboard, very good percussion you can hear shawn and chris amaizngly on this song, every member shines. 5 starsp14-danger keeps away: can i say pink floyd again! the knot take us on a journey knot style. 4 starspthis album is a masterpiece you will grow to like or like straight away this album, its amazing who woulda thought a band who wrote a song as brutal as surfacing write a song as brutal and psychaldelic as this this is a journey from beginning to end, hats off again to rick rubin for another masterpiece for his walls. and the best slipknot album yet. the man with the beard is definately the missing touch to what coulda been slipknot day 1, 5 star album *****

5 out of 5 stars wow..   June 4, 2004

I didnt like the first 2 albums simply because it was solid noise for 40 minutes. Dont get me wrong, I love tracks like Heretic Anthem and Wait and Bleed etc but I dont want to hear 12 very similar songs back to back. It all faded into the background to me... Its all change now though. You get some classic Slipknot sounding songs such as The Blister Exists which you will recognise as Slipknot as soon as you hear it and the album sounds similar if not slightly better until all of a sudden you reach track 6.. An acoustic song. This completly took me by suprise. Also tracks like Vermillion are superb and display a different style to the band. They dont have to play as quickly as possible and hit the bass drum as many times as they can in each song.brEach track feels more like a song and has more strucure and all the songs are more memorable after a few listens then anything by the band before. brTHe great thing that Slipknot have managed to do here is that all old fans will enjoy this album as it is still the same basic formula. All Slipknot fans of old that ive spoken to love this too and usually, more.brDont buy the album because you like Duality, its great but its not the highlight of the album by a long way. That goes to Vermillion or The Nameless. Both of these display new attributes to Slipknot that you wouldnt know existed before now (solos, great singing, acoustic guitars, harmony etc..)pIn short, Slipknot could not release another album packed full of what the first two had. They needed a change and change is not always good... It was a risk but it wasn't half pulled off well! Big congratulations must go to Rick Ruben also as his influence can be heard throughout the album. brThe most important thing is to not be put off if you dont like the other two albums!! This is MUCH better!p9.5/10

5 out of 5 stars SLIPKNOT ALL DA WAY, MAN!!   October 5, 2004

Just when i thought Slipknot were a memory, i heard they were releasing a new CD, when i got it, i thought it was absolutely magnificant!! Since i got into Heavy Metal and Rock, Slipknot were the 9 musicians hiding behind masks, i remember when i first heard them on the radio, late, i thought "If i like these guys i'll be the bee's knees?" Sorry for quoting Jack Black, but i became popular in school and i was just 10 years old when i bought Iowa, their 2nd offering.pLet's just focus on this CD hmmm???pSlipknot are the reason why i became a Roadrunner Records fan, then i liked a band called Chimaira, another RR band. The first song "Prelude 3.0" is quite a great show-opener, "The Blister Exists" is a good way of you knowing that the band exists, a good tune and beat. Corey's vocals are still throat lacerating. Good chorus, "Three Nil" is quite aggressive which is a high point, "Duality" is the best on the CD and i'm not just saying that, seen the video, terrific!!p"Opium of The People" is a good one explaining Idiosyncrasies, and a great chorus, "I won't give another soul to you." A nice quote there. "Vermilion" a nice colour and song, real sensitivity in that. "Pulse of the Maggots" a real boaster, but great aggression. "Berfore I Forget" has a great chorus, really brain-washing. "The Nameless" is a fantastic song. The Last song "Danger-Keep Away is sensitive, and is a bit like Radiohead transformed into Slipknot.pOverall, Brilliant new Slipknot, songs stunning, BUY IT, but it's better with SLIPKNOT and IOWA 2gether guys. See you...pTo My Friends, FIE YE DI'EN!!! p~ Calum Fairweather (Heavy Metal Fan and Reviewer)
