| Customer Reviews: Joe Meek Lives!! September 29, 2005 Jonathan Horne (Whitstable, Kent United Kingdom) 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
This four disc boxed set is what we'd all been waiting for. As well as all his hits, we have loads of his engineered stuff, previously unreleased stuff from the infamous "tea chest tapes", stuff never intended for release - Joe's message to Dave and Dee, Joe's answerphone message (with his secretary Pip I think??), and rare tracks that, although released, are damned hard to get hold of. In all a fabulous boxed set, charting the rise and fall of the greatest independant record producer of them all!! Buy it, you won't regret it.
Excellent compilation! April 20, 2006 Guy Foulard (Seattle) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
As a mid-level Meek-o-phile who had a few other Meek-related cds, this box set is a great step up. I was pleased to realize I had only about 10% of the tracks on here already. The organization of the discs manages to provide a comprehensive overview of Joe's career while at the same time offering up a treasure trove of less familiar songs. Bravo!
Meek for Meek Fanatics October 16, 2009 B. Siffredi (Brazil) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This box set is great for Joe Meek enthusiasts, because it covers almost all the different periods of Meek's production. However, it's probably best suited for hardcore fans, since this includes very different styles of music, and hardly all of the songs will appeal to the listener in the same way. The first cd has some very interesting jazz recordings, in which Joe had worked as an engenieer. However, it also carries some recordings where you can't find any 'special sounding stuff' that you would normally associate with Joe Meek. From the second cd on, all songs are very 'Meeked', but that also doesn't mean they are all good. Since there are circa 28 tracks per cd, this may make the whole experience a bit 'too much' for the less interested ear. However, for fans it's a real trip to 'Meekland'. One of the most interesting things in the box are the three versions of Telstar, that give you a hint of how he came up with that crazy song. And Heinz's version of Dylan's 'Don't Think Twice, It's Alright' actually doesen't sound too bad either. The box also contains a really cool book with Meek's tragic life story and quotes from people that worked with him, like John Leyton and Ritchie Blackmore. To sum it up, if you you're a fan, buy it now and thank yourself later. If you're not a fan, but want to know more of Meek, the best choice might the 2 cd compilation "Joe Meek - The Alchemist Of Pop".
latest Joe Meek release September 22, 2005 20 out of 21 found this review helpful
This Cd Boxed set has been along time in coming sterling work by particular people. Beautiful packaging nice CD's and lovely booklet well worth the money-- If you are a Meekophile then you will already have the unreleased tracks, as they have been doing the rounds for Years- If a new meek freak then this is just what you want a great start-Shame they had to include tracks Like "Have I The Right" The Honeycombs Just Like Eddie Heinz Theres many more could of been added. I suppose as the concept of the album is Joe's Work as it unfolded okay. There is nothing new here for me personally but make no mistake this is a Magnus Opus-of a work and effort worth every penny you spend. One of the Stand Out Tracks is " Message To Dave Dee" By Joe Meek Himself- could be released now as a single brilliant- On disc 4 I would of liked to have seen tracks Like "Every Little Once In A While" The Shakeouts- Crawdaddy Simone" The Syndicates- for starters. On the first disc Jackie Davies Somewhere Over The Rainbow- Chico Arnez ( same person)-Yashmak would of been a better choice than Frankie Vaughans Green Door- but there you are. If you have just found an interest in Joe Meek dont hesitate and buy this then try and find the other 60 CD's already released worldwide mostly in the UK---I am also Not sure about the warblings Of Joe Meek doing pre Telstar- does not Give Joe real Creedence-- Sound restoration and overall general sound is excellent some tracks have been slowed from the original unreleased and some are not as good as the originals certainly not mine- but dont let this detract you from buying It. I am speaking as a Meek Researcher and adjudicator not as a potential new Meek buyer overall great item you should not be without
