Great to be back August 18, 2004 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have been a fan of Van Halen for only a few years, pretty much since I started playing guitar myself. My only knowledge before this was 'Jump' and the 'Beat It' sole Eddie put on the Michael Jackson record. The latter inspiring me to pick up the guitar in the first place.pHaving been playing for 5 years now and read, bought and learned as much as I could have about the band, I am pleased to see the release of this CD. What can be said about the tracks that we all knew would be included here, they are all classics and the reason we are here reading the reviews in the first place.pBut for me the excitement is in the 3 new tracks, 'Its about time' opens up with a crushing guitar and bass riff and it takes about 22 seconds for that clear Van Halen vibe to kick in. A great track and a nice message to the fans that have waited for 5 years to see some new material.p'Up For Breakfast' opens with a strange delayed bass sound that reminds me of the music played in Beverly Hills Cop 2 (shoot out scene at the weapons depo). Classic lines and magical guitar parts. Another nice track that will have people request guitar tabs for all over the world.p'learning to see' come in with big drums and wah guitar, its a little grungy. With softer verses and big chorus it harks back a it, but a great guitar solo that's all about feedback and feeling as opposed to the outright speed and power eddies used to throw at you whenever you looked away. Not as strong as the first 2 but a real 'head nodder' all the same.pSo 3 great new tracks combined with all our old favorites, I am little disappointed not to see the inclusion of some lesser know tracks such as 'Little Guitars' and 'human Being' but then we all have our favorites.pMore importantly I think the theme of this record is about the old times and to showcase without giving the game away what's left for Van Halen, Its not just a look back and cash in record.pHopefully it includes UK date in their currant tour, and even more new material.

The Best Of Most Worlds... July 21, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Now, I don't know enough about Van Halen to criticise this compilation for being in a poor order as far as chronology goes, indeed it is supposed to be a mix, but some songs do sound a little out of place - for example, the 1st disc opens with Eruption, and then goes onto have three new songs, and then Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love. The two on either side of these new ones sound "old" (in a good way), and the newbies sound obviously new. This contrast feels a bit odd, and also the new ones are about the worst on the whole ablum while these "old" ones are among the best. In saying that, "poor" Van Halen is often better than other bands' "good". brThe Best Of Both Worlds title refers to having both Hagar and Lee Roth songs, indeed often alternating between each song. Really, I think this could have been better split discs - Hagar on one and Lee Roth on the other, but again this is a niggle rather than a comlaint.brThe music is really brilliant all the way through, and any poor ordering can be combatted easily by simply playing them in the order you want. The quality of the songs far outweighs any petty complaints about song order or cover art, and, unless you have these songs already or aren't into rock, this really is essential listening, especially for the likes of me: new to Van Halen.

Bad idea, Great Music July 24, 2004 Denis (Dublin, Co. Dublin Ireland) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The 3 new songs are not bad (It's about time is great - judgement day sort of song). People who criticise the running order miss the point - VH are a terrific band, and the personalities of the singers should never take away from the fact that the music is great.pThat said, I would not have bought this if there wasn't new stuff on it, so it's the usual record company swindle. The complete elimination of any reference to the "3" era is unfortunate. It was their weakest album, but through no fault of Gary Cherone's, who was a great singer.pLet's hope they do a concert DVD soon. They don't have a good record in this area, but could do worse than look at some of Sammy's DVD's for ideas!
