5 out of 5 stars genius in-deed!   September 28, 2006

This album is classic Ray with lucsious strings and brass arrangements. Featuring that 'big band' sound that is synonymous with Basie and Ellington. In his very productive career Charles gradually progressed from playing in his own trio to adding brass and wind instruments and a backing vocal group dubbed 'the raelettes'. I would describe the love songs on this album as smooth and visceral (from the heart), the stand-out track for me being 'come rain or come shine'. A very special album from a very special artist.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD not only for Ray Charles fans !   February 23, 2005

If you are trying to work out what genius is, you should be listening to this record. Because this is indeed a great CD not only for Ray Charles fans but for all people who love beautiful, versatile and intelligent music. This 19-track CD includes one of the best songs by the late Ray Charles. "Blues Is My Middle Name" sings Ray Charles but so is RB and Soul, Jazz and Rock'n'Roll because he literally influenced American music like no other artist did and all these genres wouldn't be the same if it wasn't for Ray Charles. If you haven't got anything by America's greatest singer, then this album is strongly recommended!!!

At the age of 27, Ray Charles had already put out six albums of superlative Fifties R 'n' B, but it was time for him and Atlantic to make a change and the February 1960 release of "...Genius..." was the result. br / br /An LP full of covers, the 6 tracks on Side 1 made up the blasters and dancers, while the 6 on Side 2 were the romantic ballads and standards. TOM DOWD engineered, RALPH BURNS arranged the beautiful strings and QUINCY JONES did most of the pumping brass parts. br / br /Personally I find some of the brass on Side 1 a bit too harsh to listen to now - but the lush music of Side 2 is a whole different ballgame. Side 2 contains three genuine masterpieces "Just For A Thrill", "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Cryin'" and the stunning album finisher "Come Rain Or Come Shine" (lyrics above). The remaster brings out all the instruments involved and is just `so' sweet - a really great job done. br / br /The CD comes in a card digipak with a foldout 10-page inlay, which contains an essay by noted soul writer CHARLES WARING followed by the album's original liner notes by NAT HENTOFF. Detailed production credits are on the rear of the digipak and this 2005 remaster is part of the massively extensive "Atlantic Masters" series (see comprehensive list below). br / br /"The Genius Of Ray Charles" was recognized as a gem then and still is now - recommended. br / br /Other "Atlantic Masters" CD titles are: br /1. Your Mind Is On Vacation - MOSE ALLISON (1976) br /2. Daddy Bug ( Friends) - ROY AYERS (1967) br /3. Stoned Soul Picnic - ROY AYERS (1968) br /4. Virgo Vibes - ROY AYERS (1967) br /5.
