Amazon.co.uk Review More than a mere rap album, Mos Def's long-awaited IThe New Danger/I combines hip-hop, blues, soul, and rock in an 18-track package that seeks to transcend convention. In that sense, it shares a similar spirit with Andre 3000's IThe Love Below/I or Common's IElectric Circus/I, with mixed results. Mos's reputation has been built on the strength of his lyrical charisma, and songs like "Close Edge," "Grown Man Business," and "Sunshine" show that his skills haven't faded just because he's Emmy-nominated. He's already proven that he can cut more than just street heat--best evinced on the soulful, poetic "Umi Says," a surprise hit from his previous release, 1999's IBlack on Both Sides/I. Yet, the rock- and blues-inspired songs here, while by no means poor, are acquired tastes, given their tendency to noodle--they simply can't compare with Mos's cutting verbal displays. The album's length and sometimes clunky sequencing can make for challenging listening, especially when so many of his more experimental cuts come early on. New fans might find the album's eclecticism intriguing, although older fans will likely be a bit perplexed. I--Oliver Wang/I

Some things are worth the wait October 21, 2004 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
5 years ago I was given Mos Def's debut solo LP 'Black On Both Sides' for Christmas. Musically, it was probably the best present I've ever received. An astonishing album of epic proportions and still to this very day what is in my eyes the best hip hop LP ever made! So you can therefore understand why I have been eagerly anticipating Mos' follow up record for 5 years! Mos returns with an album which is very different to 'Black On Both Sides', but that is not a bad thing. It actually proves that this current hip hop, and now budding movie star is as talented as they come. Mos has stepped into the creative side of his skills, combining hip hop with a cocktail of rock and rhythm and blues. This becomes apparent from the very first track and continues frequently throughout the 18 tracks. But the most impressive factor about 'The New Danger' is the production, which is perfect in everyway. Everything sounds so new, so fresh and you can see why Mos has taken his time in finishing off this gem of a record. Stand out tracks include the brilliant collaboration with the legendary Shuggie Otis and the deep, but humorous 'The Panties', but it's the track where Mos uses samples of 'Flying High In The Sky' and 'What's Going On' by the late Marvin Gaye that just simply amazes me, absolutely stunning, and must be heard to be appreciated. All in all 'The New Danger' is a new direction for Mos Def but one he pulls off in amazing fashion. Some things are more than worth the wait, and if Mos Def continues to take 5 years to make a new LP's like this then I'm more than willing to wait!
Great. November 4, 2005 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
There are a lot of reviews that have gone into great detail about why this isnt as good as BOBS, and that its a mish-mash, blah blah blah. As far as im concerned, it doesnt need dissecting, just listen to it and enjoy it. Its an awesome album and i never tire of listening to it. There#x27;s a lot of energy in there and its soooo much better than a lot of the rubbish that is continually released as so called hiphop. Get this album, you wont be disappointed!
Mos Def is Def! June 1, 2007 patchgamer (uk) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Awesome album. cant believe so many suckers didnt like it. Very experimental but something different. hes a new person on this album. Dont just compare it to his id (BOBS) cuz its completely different. Infact dont compare it to any thing but itself cuz its completly individual.

quality album from start to finish. perhaps a bit too rocky for hardcore hip hop fans, but still plenty of great rapping and funky beats to keep you listening!! BUY IT
