Who Is He? Mike Jones! October 23, 2005 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
You can't deny Mike Jones his credit. He has produced an album that, whether loved or hated, has got the whole rap world talkin. As a rapper, the Swishahouse rep is really nothing special, name dropping (including his own...) many, many times makes up around 50% of this record. The rest is filled with the general talk about girls, purple drank, cars, money, diamond grillz etc etc.pHowever, this constant generic constant verses are making him one of the most accessible rappers ever. His album has sold hundreds of thousands of copies around the US and held a top ten spot for weeks. It's these repetetive lyrics that have made him a favourite in commercial circles, whilst painting a target on his head for attack from the real hip-hop headz.pWhether you like his lyrics or not, you can't hate on the beats. Michael '5000' Watts, plus several Houston native relative no-names have pulled out beats that fit the album perfectly. Most tracks are real trunk-poppers (Still Tippin', What Ya Know About, Turning Lane), with a few down tempo numbers thrown in (Flossin', Grandma) and something for the club (Back Then).pTo sum up, Who Is Mike Jones? will be bumpin in your stereo for a few weeks. After that, you won't want to hear it ever again. Lets hope he finds some originality for his next album. Coming soon (yawn).
Mike Jones ad nauseum July 25, 2005 Amanda Richards (ECD, Guyana) 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
Well if you don't know Mike Jones after this album, maybe you should get your hearing tested. A fifteen song self promotion exercise, the lyrics are repetitive to the extreme, with the chant "Mike Jones" comprising about 75% of the total number of words. pYou have to give the Houston native some credit though - through his tenacity he has sold more than 250,000 copies of this album, impressive figures for an average rapper with limited lyrics. I was puzzled at the unintelligible first lines of the lead off track "Back Then", until I read the lyrics: p"Back then hoes didn't want me, now I'm hot hoes all on me" br"Back then hoes didn't want me, now I'm hot hoes all on me - I SAID" br"Back then hoes didn't want me, now I'm hot hoes all on me" br"Back then hoes didn't want me, now I'm hot hoes all on me - I SAID" pEach song has a promotional segment, even announcing a contact phone number, as in "Got It Sewed Up", where he raps: p"here the number you can hit me on brwhen you call ask for Mike Jones br2813308 zero zero four brhere the number you can hit me on brwhen you call ask for Mike Jones" pand "Turning Lane": p"Who? Mike Jones!! Who? Mike Jones!! Who? Mike Jones!! br2 8 1, 3 3 oh, eight zero zero fo' baby, geah! " pAlthough he has some good tracks, like "Flossin" and "Still Tippin", and some juicy samples of "If You're Not here By My Side" and "We've Only Just Begun (The Romance is Not Over)", by the end of the album, you wouldn't really be sorry if you never heard that name again. pAmanda Richards
