5 out of 5 stars Definitive NWOBHM   July 26, 2005

Possibly the best album to emerge from the NWOBHM scene. Guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Kevin Heybourne was hugely underrated - in his composition and playing you can hear the technical thrash that Metallica Megadeth were to have great success with. Versatile too - the restrained bluesy solo on 'Freeman' is stunning. This reissue is remastered and contains 10 bonus tracks. You get the 'Loser' single + the 'B' sides, the 'B' sides of the 'Sweet Danger' single and 'Baphomet', which was originally on the 'Metal For Muthas' compilation. The real jewel though is having the 4 track session from 'The Friday Rock Show' included - the versions of 'Sweet Danger', 'Angel Of Death' and 'Angelwitch' are far superior to the album versions, particularly the bass-heavy 'Sweet Danger'. The BBC managed to do justice to many of the NWOBHM bands in their sessions that the bands albums couldn't match; Witchfynde did a stunning session and I have yet to hear a better version of 'Transylvania' than the one Iron Maiden recorded for 'The Friday Rock Show'. Overall the remaster gives the album a bit of a kick and improves the 'pots pans' drum sound that the original suffered with.

5 out of 5 stars Memories are made of this.....   August 10, 2009

I used to love a bit of Angel Witch when I was young full of teenage angst (those days when you your mates used to go to each others houses listen to records talk drivel, mostly about football, music girls from school you had no chance of scoring with) but had not ever gotten round to buying anything by them at the time. I stumbled across this as it was an Amazon "recommendation" snapped it up. br /It's a great slice of NWOBHM nostalgia. Some of it is a bit of a cliche, some might argue that it is a bit dated but I think that if you take thses issues into account remember that it is of its time, then you will find it an enjoyable record with some very worthwhile "extras". br /Angel Witch were a band that never seemed to realise their potential or take off in the same way as some of their peers weren't well liked by the rock critics of the time(the band breaking up quite early on won't have helped either of course !!) - don't let that put you off getting hold of this record though. br /The title track remains a really well written, catchy bit of rock I find there are some real gems across the piece - White Witch,Sweet Danger,Free Man Baphomet (as one of the Non album tracks) br /In many ways it's standard NWOBHM fare but it's one period one of the styles / genres of rock music that I grew up with that I still retain affection for, so I love it. br /There's nothing flash, surprising or unexpected on this record, it is what it is. If you like the NWOBHM style (specifically this Angel Witch album has been described as the first Sabbath album played through a cement mixer) then you may well like this. Personally, I like to listen to this on train journey's before going to business meetings across the country. It helps me to worry less about the impending "challenge" take the meetings a great deal less seriously - how about that ? Angel Witch, the metal band that helps to give you perspective !!

4 out of 5 stars A blast from the past.   July 16, 2009

Very short review. br /I used to own the lp when it came out. I bought it on the back of hearing the Baphomet track on the Metal for Muthas compilation. br /The album itself is okay, where it comes into it's own is all the extras. These breathe a welcome lease of life into the whole package. br /Pretty good.

I bought this album when I was thinner, hairier and easier to impress. It has lain untouched in my vinyl collection for many years, but spotting it in a sale on this very website got me curious. The price was right, so it seemed rude not to renew acquaintances. And... br /Hmmm. The package itself is great, with sleevenotes that took me back, whetted my appetite, and filled in lots of unknown information. Of the music, I thoroughly enjoyed the album itself, I suspect mainly through the rose tinted specs of memories. The sleevenotes include some savage reviews from the time, and, actually I can see where some of them are coming from. The rhythm section are lost in the depths of the mix, and the lyrics are pretty chucklesome. But all that is put aside in the years of history with my younger self, and I enjoyed it enormously. Of the extras, only really Baphomet ticked the boxes for me, and indeed it sounded like it should have been on the album originally. The singles included I found very weak though, and without the familiarity and attachment with the songs, my interest tapered off. As has already been mentioned, the BBC sessions were harder than the album. I can see how that might be considered a good thing, as the album is thought a bit weak by some. But myself, and probably only due to my rosy memories, I actually preferred the original album. br /So all in all, is it the lost classic that it is thought of? No, I think not. However, I can think of many worse ways to spend the £4 it cost me. If the price is right, you can get a perfectly good album with tons of extras, and give the blokes behind it some probably very welcome retrospective royalties. Go on, do it, and get yourself the Witchfynde "Give 'Em Hell" album while your at it. Probably my next review, that one. br /
