Amazon.co.uk Review
IPassion/I, Geri Halliwell's third solo album since leaving the Spice Girls, proves the queen Spice has still got what it takes. Perhaps Geri's take on a concept album, IPassion/I begins and ends with very traditional, big-band numbers--two smoky ballads where Geri sounds in good voice with no big, shouty chorus behind her as a safety net. The second single, "Desire", is a pretty good tune and the most contemporary here with its urban break and fuzzy synths, but the best bits of IPassion/I sound like they came straight from 1998. p If the Spice Girls' final album had sounded more like this one's "Don't Get Any Better" or "Superstar" (where Geri sings the campest line "Ooh, Baby, I want your hot action"), then they might have stayed together a bit longer. Ultimately, IPassion/I contains upbeat, sing-a-long songs with a touch of soul and a cheesy dollop of tongue-in-cheek pop. There are moments where Geri tries to subdue her nostalgic "grrl power" as on "Feel the Fear" and "Let Me Love You More", which both go for Dido's adult-pop listeners, but Geri's at her best when she sticks with the prevailing out-and-out pop formula. --IGeorgina Collins/I

5 out of 5 stars Geri's Triumphant Return   May 24, 2005

= Fantastic Return For GeribrReviewer: A music fan from UK, NewcastlebrThis album is still yet to be released on june 06, but I still managed to catch it a few days ago off the netbrGeri's Triumphant return with this album should cement her icon status as a great solo artist.brThis album rocks!, theres not a bad song amongst this new collection of material.p1. PassionbrBig intro, kinda jazzy, very breathy, but it works. Then the beat kicks in, again very jazzy, almost sexy. "Give me a reason to take you back, Give me a reason to try, Give me a reason, 'cos love is in season, But give me no reason to cry." Weird opener of song really, perhaps it'll grow, but it kinda dictates the 'passion' aspect of the album.br6/10p2. DesirebrThe 2nd single. You should all know it, electro, quite seductive, but not amazing. Isn't my favourite, but not terrible. Fun to listen to, but kinda hard on the ear at times, you never really know what to make of it.br7/10p3. Love Never Loved MebrThis was in the toss up for the 2nd single, both this and Desire were put onto songpeople to ask for reactions, obviously Desire won, but, I think they made a mistake. This is pretty much 1998 Cher, meets 2001 Geri... CAMPTASTIC. Great lyrics "Love never loved me, Love left me out in the cold, Love never loved me, Love gave up on me afterall" something I'm sure we can all relate too. Improved from the demo, good musical break down, with her hitting a high note towards the end. Should be the next single.br10/10p4. Feel The FearbrAnother self help inspired song, but with a beautiful intro, and very light airy vocals from Geri, until the chorus starts to kick in, and so does the beat. "Give me one more day, I've got to have my say, I'm not afraid to feel the fear, and do it anyway." It's a bit fillerish and plodding, but listenable, and picks up half way through where she really speeds it up, and towards the end it really really kicks in, which is a shame as I'd like the whole album like this, but it is a nice and almost unexpected build up.br7/10p5. SuperstarbrHmm more upbeat and camper than the rest of the tracks, less guitar based. I think it's been produced by Ian Masterstone, the first of two songs co-written with Guy Champers. "A little bit of jammin' on a Saturday, That's my ecstacy." Far better, still, it's not my favourite song, but definately catchy and miles better than the demo.br7/10p6. Surrender Your GroovebrReminds me a lot of Kylie's 'Giving You Up'. Upbeat, fun, and typically Geri. Nothing too amazing, but a solid enough album track!br6/10p7. Ride ItbrYa'll know this one! Camptastic, craptastic pop!br9/10p8. There's Always TomorrowbrSlow, sleepy song, boring. Not much else to say.br3/10p9. Let Me Love You MorebrAmazing intro, extremely sweet and sincere, middle of the road song, until it completely slows down, and she sings almost accapella showing that her voice HAS improved. Less guitars than the demo had. But truly beautiful song. Also the outro is as beautiful as the intro.br10/10p10. Don't Get Any BetterbrOne of her self-help type songs "This is life, take it from me, don't get any better". Hard to describe, it's not that great in all honesty, again a bit MOR, it plods along happily, but I really can't imagine it being raved over. Nice outra with Geri shouting it out in the background.br4/10p11. Loving Me Back To LifebrOriginally she wrote this years ago, well parts of it - a small clip was included in her 2nd book, it's also the 2nd co-written Guy Chambers track. Piano ballad, was one of my favourites from the demo, and I wasn't disappointed. Her new vocals really shine on this song, it reminds me a little of Walkaway in a bit, but without the murky muddy vocals that held the song back, her notes are crystal clear, she's not an amazing singer, but she's really done good here.br10/10p12. So I Give Up On LovebrShow girl, cabaret song. The typical end song from Geri - all jokey and fun, like You're In a Bubble and Heaven and Hell Being Geri Halliwell. She's basically ripping it out of ex's, in the intro she says "Good evening ladies and gentlemen, Boys you better listen, Names have been changed to protect the innocent, Just incase it's about you." I wasn't expecting to like this song as much as I do, I'm not often a fan of Geri's 'funny' songs, but this is a great way to end the album. Really uplifting, and well, if you like Geri as a person, you'll like this trackbr7/10pOverallbrI was originally very worried about Geri, back in 2003 there was no sign of her musical comeback, SIYWGF had underperformed, and she was being la la in USA. But then, a song 'Ryde It' leaked, which then shocked the fans to became the next single as it had come from nowhere, the album isnt as bad as people will expect.brSome tunes are good, some well, not so good - she then got sent to re-recorded, remaster and record new songs. I was worried the whole thing would be a complete and utter MESS. Luckily, it's not. It's a great collection of songs by Geri, less camp than 'Scream If You Wanna Go Faster', and probably a bit more mature at times than 'Schizophonic'. If anyone is worried she's sold out to become Middle of the Road, don't worry. This album is pure Geri, and Passion will become the first album that will complete a Spice Girls contract. If you like pop, buy it. p9/10

5 out of 5 stars Geri's most mature work to date   June 11, 2005

After the dissapointing low entry of Desire(no 22) last week and rumours the album wasn't very good I still had to but it cause its Geri. I have to say I am very impressed. My track-by-track review is belowpPassion: Jazzy opener to Geri's third solo album, reminisent of Goodnight kiss from her first solo record, plods along, easily listenable but nothing very special.br5/10pDesire: Despite its low entry in the charts last week this isn't a bad song I think because its so different to previous Geri material people were just not ready for it. Its sexy and seductive catchy pop shame it did so bad.br7/10pLove never loved me: This is one of my favourite tracks on the album and should have been realised instead of desire. It's fun yet has a deep meaning behind it. I suppose you could say credible Euro-pop. After the first 2 tracks being slow its a welcome fast uplifting highlight to the album.br9/10pFeel the fear: Feel the fear was written about Geri's spice girl days and in the album sleeve she dedicates the track to Five girls in a Fiat Uno(Victoria used to own a Fiat Uno before the girls made it big). Its like a power ballad slow but a strong chorus and really becomes alive towards the end with a louder final chorus.br7/10pSuperstar: Very camp and typically Geri one of two tracks written with Guy Chambers, Robbie Williams former song-writing partner. Its fast, good fun but not amazing.br7/10pSurrender your groove: Of all the album tracks I find this the weakest after several listens I don't find much to it. It's quite slow despite the title making you think it would be a big disco number so I was dissapointed. Weakest track.br4/10pRide it: As soon as you buy the album you'll know this one.Definately undertsand why it was the first single as its the most commercial number. Seductive and extremely catchy reminisent of many kylie songs. One of the best tracks.br9/10pThere's always tomorrow: This is an ok track and perfectly acceptable album track but I don't think that much of it. Despite the verses being quite catchy I found the chorus to be dissapointing. The latino background music is pleasant though just could have been stronger. Some people may enjoy it and some won't.br6/10pLet me love you more: Another amazing track so beautiful and sensual. It's definately one of the best tracks on the album and very mature sounding for a ballad no cheese to it. br9/10pDon't get any better: This track is camp and catchy after few listens it grows on you much more. Fun track and geri talks about her tits and ass so its good fun.br7/10pLove me back to life: Second track written with Guy Chambers and in my opinion the best track on the album. A beautiful ballad about thanking someone despite breaking up with them for the love they gave you. Stirrs up deep emotions and the beautiful piano intro is unlike any previous Geri tracks. It has such a mature feel to it almost Dido-esque.br10/10pSo I give up on love: Very jazzy and reminisent of the Spice Girls track The Lady is a vamp. Geri talks about her exes and gives them code names to hide their identities.Very amusing and catchy camp jazz at the same time. This is like Geri's fun track to round the album off.Good fun.br8/10pAll in all this album is a much more mature piece of work and there are songs here unlike anything Geri has recorded before. Her voice is stronger and she's growing from a performer into an artist. Not perfect but definately a cd that you can leave playing and no two tracks sound the same. br9/10

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Geri, Beautiful!!!   June 28, 2005

Geri will probably forever remembered as a member of Spice Girls but I think her first and third solo album will be remebered almost as well as the Spice Girls albums too...at least they should be. When I first I heard the songs "Ride It" and "Desire" I though that she will make an excellent album this time...and she did. There's some peaceful songs like "Passion", "There's Always Tomorrow", "So I Give Up on Love" and it is strange that "Passion" is also an opening track. However, when you begin to listen to this album again and again...you will found it as one of the best pop albums ever. There's also a little bit jazz in some songs. The lyrics are actually mostly about love, hope, and you-know-what...I don't think that the songs "Ride It" and "Desire" leave you without answer. There's some very good songs like "Love Never Loved Me" and "Feel the Fear" which are very beautiful songs. "Don't Get Any Better" and "Superstar" are defintely the songs with the positive attitude...taking the things as they are. Geri's voice is much more beautiful than in the earlier albums...or is it maybe her mood??? I found all the songs very good and definitely Geri's best. I found almost all the songs in this album even as good as "Calling", "Circles Round the Moon", "Mi Chico Latino", "Lift Me Up", and "Mi Chico Latino" in her earlier two albums. "Love Never Loved Me" is my favourite Geri Halliwell song ever!!! It has very good keyboards.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful new direction for Geri   February 8, 2006

I was so happy to see that my girl was coming back with a new album. I was ecstatic when I first heard "Ride It", on her web site, because unfortunately my country is so saturated with this whole rediculous urban/hip-hop scene that songs like "Ride it" or "Desire" (especially) would never even get a chance to be played on the radio. It#x27;s hard enough for pop artists to get played now without lending themselves to hip hop beats or raps now. The hay-day of the nineties, when Geri and the girls ruled over the charts, are long gone. It#x27;s nice to see though that she#x27;s still going, even if from what I#x27;ve read and heard the album didn#x27;t do so well.p"Passion" is an aquired taste, I think. It#x27;s hard for an artist to kinda do their own thing and not give in to top 40 appeal. This record I think was the msot personal for Geri, at least that what it sounded like. I remember reading a while ago that she liked the jazzy type sound, the slow lounge singer thing, which would explain "Passion" and "So I Give Up on Love", which are both very different from what the usual pop listener would take up listening to in their car. I didn#x27;t really like the last track at first, but after I decided to listen to it a couple times, I really grew to like it. I had to do the same thing with "Desire" because it was an unusual track, but I like it now. It#x27;s kinda like Britney#x27;s "Toxic" but slower.pOver all the album is really good, I think. It#x27;s a different direction for Miss Halliwell, taking a much more serious tone than either of her previous albums. There#x27;s not so much camp as we#x27;ve grown to love her for, but it can definetly be found in several tracks. I think "Desire", "Love Never Loved Me", "There#x27;s Always Tomorrow", "Let Me Love You More" and "Ride It" are the best tracks on here. I#x27;m upset that "Ride it" didn#x27;t do better. I think "Love Never Loved Me" should have been the second single as it is an amazing song and she knows how her boy#x27;s like it! "Let me Love You More" is beautiful and she sounds great in this relaxed tone. It#x27;s just beautiful. Those should have been her follow ups to "Ride it". But she is fabulous nonetheless.pI am really hoping the EMI or innocent or whatever they have her on now doesn#x27;t give up on her. I#x27;m disappointed with how the record company continued to handle her. I don#x27;t understand how labels can expect artists to be successful without promoting them. I don#x27;t know if I#x27;ll ever see another Geri album released here in the U.S., as badly as I want it, and "Passion" wouldn#x27;t stand a chance here. Out of all the girls, Geri was the only one to completely fulfill her contract with a major label for three albums, and she is one of the most successful and loved female performers from the UK. She just does her own thing and appreciates the fact that she can do what she loves to do because that#x27;s all we really want. I don#x27;t think she likes giving into mainstream stuff, and as she#x27;s said Pop doesn#x27;t have to be a dirty word. She makes it fun, not so serious, and helps to define pop. I always thought that if she pushed herself hard enough, she could be the next Madonna. I really did. She doesn#x27;t care what anyone else thinks and I have so much respect for her.pPlease EMI, don#x27;t give up on her if you haven#x27;t already. I don#x27;t think you understand what you have. And hopefully she#x27;ll be able to continue recording. I just read that she#x27;s pregnant, which is wonderful. The child will be fabulous! I know it. All the best Miss Halliwell, and know that even across the pond you are continuously adored.
