Album with more soul than soul food June 29, 2005 mmb (South Africa) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I really loved this CD, I've had it on my CD player since I got it. It's sexy, it's interesting, and it's intellectually stimulating. Being a female I think that this is one of the first male hip-hop albums I've listened to which really appreciates a woman's point of view on the world. And I don't care what all you other playa haters have said...Common is looking really good. The whole feel of the album is just so fresh and mature. The only big gripe I do have though is that the songs are a bit too short and the whole album is a bit too short as well. I would have liked 2 or 3 more tracks on it. Go out and get it if you haven't got it, and if you do have it keep pumping it so everyone else can go and get it. Good music should be heard by all, so that all that bad stuff that is out there can be diluted and done away with....
Common Is Back!!!!!!!!! June 9, 2005 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I was initialy sceptical about Commons latest release but those fears were laid to rest after listening to this amazing album. I have been a fan of common for a while but after hearing his last effort 'electric circus' I beacame slightly disalusioned. I'm not a massive fan of Kanye West but his talents are clear form the fantastic production efforts on this album. Commons lyrical flow and content are up to his usual excellent standard. After so much poor hip hop from the U.S.(50 cent, the Game, Lil John etc.) promoting thugism on a continual level it is refreshing to here such a stand alone voice amongst the masses. Picking one great track is impossible as they are all great with artists such as John Legend, Bilal and of course Kanye making a their own contrbution. This is the hip hop album of 2005.
Soulful hip hop heaven! June 10, 2005 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Common confused many purist hip hop heads with his previous lp Electric Circus, although it was excellent (in my view) it was clearly too experimental for most. "Be" sees Common returning to the Tribe Called Quest Tru School Hip Hop blueprint. pThe production is perfect, courtesy of the ubiquitous Kanye West. The themes are "conscious" and this will most likely hold the album back from major commercial success. Nevertheless, this is a classic hip hop record, in the vein of Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest, Illmatic by Nas or Black On Both Sides by Mos Def. However, the way that Kanye infuses the album with gospel lends the album a spiritual feel that is contemporary and fresh rather than backward looking.
Not bad better yet Very Good June 1, 2005 eloquent (England Uk) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I must say that when I purchased this album I was'nt surprised at the quality of the production and one of my favourite lyricist, this is a star album one you can bump in your car or listen at home personally, there are only two small flaws; the album was short but still better than the big baller albums these days, the track called testify was spoilt by the woman in the song her voice seem to make his lyrics vague, but if you like an album that you can play all the way through what does it matter, the testify track is definitely for personal sit and listen but Kanye does spit some conscious stuff, he did well. Everyone cussed the Electric Circus album, but why is it always our people talking about originality and hate to see something different, 'Be' is not that different sound wise but a bit more of on the side of water for chocolate, it is very soulful (Kanye West and J Dilla) and conscious, and to those that bought it keep listening to it again and again, he does what an artist is suppose to do make you think, a good album highly reccommended, instead of buying all that 50 Cent invest in something that won't age on you but with you

Amazon style rating: 5 StarsbrMy critical rating: 9/10pCommon, the MC from Chicago and formally known as Common Sense, returns to unleash his sixth album! At a time when underground hip hop needs a good album from an underground heavyweight to come through, this really does go down a treat!pCommon's last album 'Electric Circus' although technically very good, was not for many exactly what they wanted to hear. It maintained the lyricism Common fans expected but was too deep to be bumped at hip hop events, in the streets or from rides! So imagine many fans panic when they hear Common has teamed up with Kanye West to be Executive Producer for the album. Kanye West certainly knows his way around the production boards and his hip hop in general, but he has produced some very poor beats as well as some good ones! Also his style certainly has a commercial slant to it, which sometimes just doesn't do it for me!pHowever this album really is good and suits Common's style and delivery brilliantly! Uplifting pianos and lyricism can be found throughout the album with decent modern old school beats, rather than some of the horrible sounds and broken beats that seem to dominate urban music these days! Kanye promised 'Resurrection style beats' when the project was announced, and although not quite in that league or as jazzy, they certainly fit the mood of the album well. J-Dilla (aka Jay Dee) produces the two tracks that Kanye doesn't and as you would expect from him lays down some soulful stuff in a similar vein.pLyrically Common is as good as ever and you really get the feeling this is an album representing the current times and looking to the future! Kanye is featured on several tracks and with his unique swagger adds something positive to the mix! The Last Poets, John Mayer, DJ A-Trak, DJ Dummy, James Poyser, John Legend, Bilal Luna E all feature adding their respective vocals, scratches and keys to the tracks!pAll the tracks are good with personal favourites being 'The Corner', 'Go!' 'Chi-City' and 'The Food' which was recorded at the Dave Chappelle Show live event. The only criticisms of the album are some of the backing vocals on 'Faithful' and 'Testify' sound vocodered and too sequenced and don't flow naturally behind the rest of the music! The bonus track 'So Cool' is also a bit too pop sounding for my liking!pThere is a bonus DVD available on limited versions of the album which is worth having to see the interviews with Common and Kanye and understand the vibe for this album providing you are only paying a few more quid for it! Common talks about what he wanted this album to represent and how he had found pressure after mixed opinions of 'Electric Circus' his previous album. Kanye talks about his love of hip hop and producing and how he wanted to make the album sound.pOverall I feel this is a modern classic that will continue to grow on the listener for sometime! It's positive and uplifting while keeping it very real as Common knows exactly how! A great album for anytime, but especially for the summertime!
