Barat has kept a low profile since the demise of The Libertines - at least, compared to estranged friend and increasingly tragic tabloid fixture Pete Doherty - but his contribution to DMC's Under "The Influence" series should be a very welcome return for Libs fans who prefer the music to the media freakshow. p A trawl through the annals of classic rock, punk, and new-wave, this is a selection that strongly belies Barat's fondness for music's dreamers, idealists, and romantics. Kicking off with a handful of picks from the hazy mid-`60s - Bowie, Dylan, the Small Faces - the pace picks up pace with definitive cuts from The Jam, The Stranglers, and The Specials AKA (and, arguably, The Smiths, whose "Bigmouth Strikes Again" still sounds exceptional today). p Hardcore Libertines fans may read significance into some of the picks: is, for instance, the inclusion of New York Dolls' "Personality Crisis" - which features the line "Your turned into the Wolfman/Howling at the moon" a conscious reference to Doherty's shady underworld friend and sometime recording partner, or just mere coincidence? Meanwhile, chaotic New York anti-folk duo Moldy Peaches' "Who's Got The Crack?" poses the sort of question that, given recent form, is probably best put rhetorically. I--Louis Pattison/I

Anyone who has loved the music of the Libertines will have quickly learned to respect Carl Barat - unpretentious, genuine and a man of proven integrity and loyalty to his band and the music he loves.pHis "Under the Influence" compilation says all this about him. Whilst other music celebrities will scratch around for something obscure in an attempt to be cool and interesting, Barat doesn't need to bother - much as he's never had to bother about being "cool" because he just IS. Here he has done what he always does, stayed true to his beliefs and to himself, and put together some timeless tracks which give a simple message - this is me.pFans of his music may already possess some of these tracks, but that just reinforces the point. For new fans and those awaiting his solo album later in the year, this is a good grounding in the sounds that influenced this talented musician and the stunning work of the Libertines themselves.pThe one surprise is the absence of the Velvets - though this is likely to be a matter of copyright permissions rather than choice.pNo-one who loves indie rock and its sources can fail to enjoy this CD .....go get it.

Having to advertise Carl as of The Libertines is in itself an indication of what is really being sold here. And that is what should make you reconsider what's inside the album sleeve. A quick read of the tracks only reinforces how standard a compilation this is - something any half serious muso could knock out in their sleep. pThis lacks what most other Under the Influences add - an insight into a musician's own personal taste that, in some way, adds an extra dimesion to our perception of them, and hopefully provides the listener with a bit of an education.pGiven that definition, Carl's effort is on a par with every other shoe gazing, ex-public schoolboy indie kid. So fairly spot on then!
