An excellent example of what Joe Meek was all about, music wise.I got this album for the Cryin Shames Please stay, which has eluded me for many years. I was well chuffed when I also found Mike Berry, Lord Sutch, Heinz and many more. A good collection and one well worth having.
Great Introduction to the work of Joe Meek May 13, 2009 Humphrey Plugg (Liverpool, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Joe Meek is, rightly, described as the English Phil Spector, and this bargain priced CD is well worth investing in if you're interested in the history of UK pop, or want an introduction to Meek's work. It features the majority of what might be termed his "classics" (Johnny Remember Me, Telstar, Just Like Eddie, Please Stay etc) and although there are a couple of duff tracks (the cheesy Globetrotter for example) overall this is a great compilation. Meek's genius was not simply his innovative use of sounds, nor his somewhat Heath Robinson approach to achieving them, but his ability to make fantastic records using what can best be described as "second division" artists like John Leyton and Mike Berry. Probably the only serious omission on this compilation is the lack of female artists - you'll have to buy the "Let's Go" CD to rectify that.
