5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!   November 4, 2005

Firstly if you#x27;re thinking about buying this Greatest Hits CD, and can play Region 1 DVDs, then go to Amazon.com(USA) and buy the Deluxe Edition which has a fantastic DVD with it...a stunning DVD in fact;with Melissa talking about all the songs on the album, old clips galore and 12 music videos/performances in full!pAnyway, the CD itself, is much better than most Greatest Hits compliations. Of the 17 tracks there are 5 new recordings, that don#x27;t appear on other albums. The choice of songs also goes right from Melissa#x27;s 1st album to the latest one. brOf the new tracks "Refugee", "This Is Not Goodbye" and "I Run For Life" are excellent tracks; full of meaning and really punchy and have a good feel to them. And you can#x27;t beat Melissa singing "Piece Of My Heart". pWith the excellent choice of tracks, mixing old with new, this is a fantastic CD, that won#x27;t ever get boring to listen to. 5 Stars!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection   November 28, 2007

I love Springsteen, Bob Seger, Mellencamp and Petty, great American rockers. I was intrigued by Etheridge. I did not really know her music and I was given a few Etheridge albums to listen to and thought each of them had some very good songs but overall, the albums were just ok. I bought this and was very impressed. A great collection of songs sung with real passion. Great voice (which reminds me a little of Bonnie Tyler!). A great introduction to Etheridge and well worth buying if you do not have any of her music in your collection and you like American rock. Thoroughly enjoyable. Recommended.

Melissa Etheridge is one of the American journeyman rockers who has quietly plied their trade in arena friendly rock-pop songs and lighters held on high ballads for the last decade and a bit. Whilst not in the league of Springsteen or Petty, she certainly is the equal of John Mellencamp, and like them all has survived all the vicissitudes in pop music#8217;s flavour of the moment scene. As this set shows, she is a reliable purveyor of catchy rock songs about love and longing, escape and desperation. Often it is her passionate delivery that elevates the rather ordinary bar band melodies and lyrics to those of a great song. #8220;I Want to Come Over#8221; and #8220;I#8217;m the Only One#8221; are classic examples of Etheridge#8217;s knack of making the ordinary almost extraordinary. The three selections from her debut are her best, bluesy and passionate; but much of her subsequent work has been similar and, at times, a bit dull. This collection is weakened by several new songs, which are uniformly unmemorable. Why did they not include the live version of #8220;Piece of My Heart#8221; from the Grammy Awards instead of the new and unconvincing studio version? Her remake of Petty#8217;s #8220;Refugee#8221; adds nothing to the song whatsoever; it just makes you remember how good the original was to hear. A better collection would have tapped some of the unreleased gems from her albums, such as #8220;Silent Legacy.#8221; That said, barring the new work, it is a solid collection for someone new to Etheridge#8217;s music.

4 out of 5 stars The hits   October 27, 2007

How nice to have so many of Melissa Etheridge's best tunes on one album. Obviously, fans will disagree on exactly which tracks should/shouldn't have been included and to some extent even I feel that way (hence the 4 stars), but you can't please everyone/ put every song on it! br /I do think it is a good mix of songs ranging from her oldest to newest (obv not 'The awakening') albums. Plus there are 5 new songs which are great. br / br /'I run for life' is so inspiring especially since I first heard it after spending a couple of months attached to a Breast Care Clinic. A very meaningful song that anyone who has been affected by this cancer in some way will be touched by. br / br /'This is not goodbye' is on the sad side but thats not unsurprising as she wrote it about her time undergoing chemotherapy. I don't like this quite as much, the melody just doesn't seem right. br / br /'Christmas in America' is a classic ME in terms of content. She goes for the jugular in the most roundabout ways. The lyrics appear to be about someone who's loved one is away in the war during xmas time and asks for them to be brought back home. Something I believe many American and British families are now saying. I must say I wish this was the last song on the album so it would be easy to skip. I feel rather silly listening to xmas songs in the middle of the year!!!! br / br /'Piece of my heart' is a rendition of the famous Janis Joplin song. I think its a 'love it or hate it' song which may depend on how you feel about the original/other versions. br / br /'Refugee' is the opening track and also a newbie. More of the typical ME in terms of music and lyrics. A good track to start off with. br / br /The other songs on the album are oldies so I won't go into it! br /Not a bad album to get if you don't have any others as it actually is a good snapshot view of what she's all about, might inspire you to get the others too!

In my opinion this is a morbid collection of 'protest' songs - truly depressing. br /My first and last time listening to Melissa Etheridge - she may think that she's some kind of poet - but she can't sing. br /The songs feel like they were written in a gloomy place and you will feel gloomy too after listening to them. br /My copy is for the 'rubbish bin'
