4 out of 5 stars Brilliant on MP3   October 8, 2006

If you don't like Hip Hop don't buy this album. If you don't like rap, well, there's a chance you might like some thing on this album. This is a variety show demonstrating the diversity of the south. Yes it does contain a large amount of rap tracks. But its so much more than that. br / br /The DF (if you don't know what the DF is- you should!) dedication by Killer Mike is a clever mix of several well known OutKast tracks and a good introductory rap track- short but listenable. Aquemini is the main beat behind Killer Mike's introduction letting "you know the story" and how "Aquemini changed to Purple Ribbon", it also includes extracts from Player's Ball and Two Dope Boyz. But enough of me letting you know my knowledge of OutKast! br / br /Honestly speaking, all the interludes are a little annoying because when you are faced with 23 tracks and only 12 songs, the album feels swamped, the dedication is a good example of this; on its own, its brilliant but, combined with two other interludes it means that Kryptonite the first full length track is the fourth track on the album. This becomes a little tedious on repeat listenings- very quickly. br / br /The track that stands out above the rest, for me, was Scar and Cee-Lo's duet. `What is this?' could have been on the `Save the Last Dance' soundtrack, it's a teenage love song that's blissful to listen to, and Cee-Lo adds his intelligent and maturing lyrics to add weight. Scar is the outstanding performer of the album. His duet with Big Boi was a precursor (and perhaps better because of its less commercial feel) to Morris Brown the massive new single on the Idelwild soundtrack. Another artist that features on both Got Purp? and Idlewild is Janelle Monae. Peculiarly, her solo performance on Got Purp? is the polar opposite too her fantastic dark comic performance on the song `Call the Law'. Sleepy Brown, disappointingly never lives up to anything on tracks in either album. br / br / The slightly crunk disposition of Bubba Sparxxx Claremont Lounge is a clear example of the diversity of the Dungeon Family. This is truly and all-round album but this is a various artist album that doesn't really flow with a unifying mood. Its not an album to listen to from end to end because of the lack of a theme as the artists are so different. br /
