Just grab it!! February 4, 2006 55 out of 61 found this review helpful
A must have for all Prince fans and an interesting collection of songs for who wants to discover his music.pIt's a 2cd-set. The first cd contains lots of Prince classics, from 'I wanna be your lover'to 'When doves cry', from 'Alphabet St' to 'Nothing compares 2 U'.brBut it's the 2nd cd that deserves more attention. You'll find here many of the finest 12 versions/remixes of songs like 'Kiss', 'Let's go crazy', 'Pop life', 'Cream'. Many of them were previously unreleased on cd format.pLast but not least, all of the songs have been digitally remastered for the occasion!!pThis is the complete tracklist:pCD1br01: I Wanna Be Your Lover br02: Uptown (Single Version) br03: Controversy br04: 1999 (Edit Version) br05: Delirious br06: When Doves Cry (Single Version)br07: I Would Die 4 U (Single Version)br08: Purple Rainbr09: Sign O The Times br10: I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man br11: Alphabet St. br12: Diamonds And Pearls (Single Version)br13: Gett Off (Single Version) br14: Money Dont Matter 2 Night br15: 7 remastered br16: Nothing Compares 2 Ubr17: My Name Is Prince (Single Version)pCD2br01: Let's Go Crazy (Special Dance Mix) br02: Little Red Corvette (Dance Remix) br03: Let's Work (Dance Remix) br04: Pop Life (Fresh Dance Mix) br05: She's Always In My Hair (12 Version)br06: Rasberry Beret (12 Version) br07: Kiss (Extended Version) br08: U Got The Look (Long Look) br09: Hot Thing (Extended Remix) br10: Thieves In The Temple (Remix)br11: Cream (N.P.G. Ultimate? Is this the last ever Prince? August 24, 2006 playinthesunshine (London) 18 out of 20 found this review helpful
I think not... his latest album '3121' would suggest Prince is so back (of course for us die-hards he never really went away). So, the Purple Paisley God rides high once more, in the US at least, and to mark the occasion those insatiable executives at Warners have packaged us up another greatest hits. And great packaging it is, with it's ace inlay fold-out documenting Prince's Warner-years singles-sleeves.
br /
br /This 'Ultimate' anthology has glaring omissions, but to be fair any Prince collection will. It's peculiar why they chose to include the full version of 'Controversy' (fab as it is) but only the edited singles-cuts of bigger hits such as '1999' and (probably the finest pop moment of the 80s) 'When Doves Cry'.
br /
br /Still, what's great about this double-CD is: 1. the tunes are remastered for your iPod pleasure, and 2. there are remixes on the second disc. The aforementioned die-hard fans will have all these remixes on original vinyl, naturally, but to have them on CD/MP3, and remastered, makes one dribble like Homer over his dounuts.
br /
br /'Ultimate' is a great intro for those seeking to understand what all the fuss is about with Prince. And great for those that were there the first time 'round. Maybe the videos remastered next? Go on Warners, milk it... we'll always shell out the pennies for Prince - the greatest musical hero of our times.
Essential Bargain for Funky Followers!! September 23, 2006 Simon Loxham (Bolton England) 12 out of 15 found this review helpful
Being a Prince fan I had to buy this release and it is one of the most rewarding CDs I have bought this year.Firstly as other reviewers have mentioned the sound is the best quality you will have heard of these tunes, assuming you buy and don't download!!
br /
br /Value for money wise it is a bargain and I feel if you are a fan of the funky man it is essential that you buy it.
br /You see Disc Two is a disco and party funk bonanza.I listened once and then again in the car and it revealed versions I didn't have and extended workouts which are awesome. There's rhythms and guitar solos in there to tickle your funky bones into action.
br /
br /Don't pass this by,every Prince fan should own it and everyone else should appreciate the jiving genius that is PRINCE!
Prince Ultimate July 27, 2006 Mr. And Mrs Aj Elliott (Gloucester, UK) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Hi
br /
br /I've been a long term Prince fan, so in fairness this could be seen as a bit bias. The album ultimate is just that on the 2nd disc there is some really rare mixes, such as the quality Lets Work remix( only available on vinyl) if you can find a copy!!! Furthermore this album sounds great, it's remastered and is one of only a few CD's that do this artist justice. Anybody who is a fan needs to get this ASAP, it also has a great inlay which details somebodies pretty amazing collection of rare vinyl.
Ultimate Dilemma August 7, 2007 Richard 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Should a casual Prince fan buy this or 'The Hits/The B-Sides'? Well, it really is a case of swings and roundabouts, because 'Ultimate' has a great selection of hits which includes some excellent 12" Versions/Remixes, plus it has been digitally remastered, but 'Hits' is more comprehensive and includes some really great stuff like: 'Dirty Mind', 'If I Was Your Girlfriend' and 'Sexy MF' etc, which are not on 'Ultimate'. Also, you get a third disc made up of B-sides as well.
br /
br /Anyway the point is, whether you get 'Ultimate' or 'Hits' you are on to a winner, just don't get 'The Very Best Of Prince' which only has a measley 17 tracks on it, which is way too lightweight even for the most casual Prince fan.
