5 out of 5 stars An Eagerly Awaited Debut Album   May 19, 2006

I'd first heard of Laura Michelle Kelly via the 'West End Musical Scene'. She was the original Mary Poppins, and after hearing her sing live in the show - well her voice is kind of angelic. I presumed that her first album would see LMK belting out some west end musical numbers but I was very wrong. This album has some wonderful original songs on it such as There Was A Time, The Storm Inside and an absolutely beautiful ballad called Butterflies. There are a few 'cover' versions but they don't sound like your average cover as you have to check the sleeve notes to be sure. Nick Drake's 'Riverman'; Bacharach's 'Reach Out' and Paul Weller's 'You Do Something To Me' will send a little shiver down the old spine. br / br /As for west end musical songs, Laura Michelle does'nt disappoint as again 'covers' but not in the traditional sense, Stephen Sondheim's 'Losing My Mind'. It's an album full of beautiful arrangements and the voice of an angel (a real one as opposed to the so called 'Crazy Chick'). br / br /It's Practically Perfect in Every Way..... (sorry, couldn't resist typing that in!)

I've had this album on repeat for a couple of days since it arrived and with every play I find a new "favourite". To start with it was the very sexy and moody version of Paul Weller's You Do Something To Me. Soon after I was singing along to Reach Out (I'd never actually listened to the words before!) but my current favourite is the wonderful Sweet Solution. It was written for Laura by Jamie Cullum and although you can really feel his fingerprint on the track Laura has made it all her own. A very sexy, high energy tune that makes you happy just listening. br / br /No doubt that by the time this is posted I'll have another favourite but that is the beauty of this album. You can listen to it time and time again and get something different out of it every time. Laura has a fantastic voice and has created a wonderful way to excape from the world for an hour or so. A Perfect Storm I'd say! br /

I read a review of this album in the papers and checked it out in my local store.Wow!!!I love Nick Drakes 'Riverman' and never imagined it could be bettered... it hasn't,but...she's definitely matched it!!The original is so wistfully melancholic whereas Lauras version evokes a sense of hope..its fab! br /As for the cover of Keanes 'Somewhere only we know' well...its pure musical theatre! You could easily see this performed as a show stopper on stage or film for that matter! Its superb and far far better than the original.I play it all the time...the orchestration is outstanding. br /The Paul Wellar cover'You do something to me' is again a spot of genius!Whoever wrote the orchestration should be given a noble prize for services to music!Ok..a bit OTT but it really adds something special to the song! br /Reach Out is fantastic...very uplifting and the choral section is imaginative! br /The original songs are excellent too...the title track is epic! You can see Divine Comedy's Neil Hannons touch there! br /Overall...the best album of 2006 so far!She should get a lot more recognition and hope to heaven she does a tour!!

I have followed Laura's career for many years now and so delighted now to have a solo album to enjoy and savour. br /Every track is quite amazing from the quiet poignant opening track of Riverman to the uplifting John Barry inspired title track The Storm Inside finished off with a great version of Keane's Somewhere Only We Know far superior to the original. br /The album is produced exquisitely by Marius De Vries with some fine musicians playing on it including Pino Pallindino(The Who and Paul Young) and Robbie McIntosh(The Prenteders and Paul McCartney Band) br /There is no limit to how high the talented and very beautiful Laura Michelle Kelly can go
