Amazon.co.uk Review
When hedonism tips into overindulgence, when the champagne fizz of pop stardom goes stale, that's where you'll find IThe Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living/I--the third album from Mike Skinner's The Streets. We fall in at the deep end with "Pranging Out", the sound of a spiky Mike "fresh" off tour and trying to booze his way out of a five-month hangover, contemplating that "the rock'n'roll cliché just walked in and smacked me". p As ever, though, the music here is thoroughly individual and frequently hilarious: the Mission Impossible-tinged "Hotel Expressionism" sees trashing a room raised to the status of artform, while the reflective "Two Nations"--an open letter to deceased rapper Notorious BIG--sees Skinner swell with pride as he recalls the UK giving America the legacy of John Lennon, "Even though you shot him as well". Meanwhile, two gospel tracks, "Never Went To Church" and "All Goes Out The Window", make a bid to be this album's "Dry Your Eyes". pAll in all, it's Skinner's most bitty, fractured album so far--not quite the gobsmacking state-of-the-nation address of 2002's IOriginal Pirate Material/I and lacking the immersive narrative of IA Grand Don't Come For Free/I--but no one makes a record like Mike Skinner makes a record, and even going out of his head, he's never less than entertaining.--ILouis Pattison/I

5 out of 5 stars why dont you actually try listening to the thing.......................   May 12, 2006

from where i am sitting it seems that the majority of people reviewing this album have bought the new Streets CD, listened to it on the way home, and judged it. The Streets have never been about that, not with regard to thier albums any way. If you want to get the full value of the entire album you must invest your time in it, and just like all the other streets albums you will reap the rewards. br /Take the time to listen again, a few times, and you might notice that Mike skinners skills have moved on fairly dramatically since a grand dont come for free, story telling, lyrical delivery ,and the loops in the background are far superior to most of his previous stuff. Yeah, and i think that i will just back-up what some other observant reviewers have noticed, HE IS SINGING ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND HIM AT THE TIME, JUST LIKE HE ALWAYS HAS!!!!!! what, you want him to start lying??!!! br /i like this album, in fact, the album as awhole is a hell of a lot better than a grand dont come for free, granted it doesnt have any songs that can match 'dry your eyes' or 'blinded by the lights' but on the whole it is a much more complete listening experiance. You just have to give a little of yourself to it to get all the benefits. br /Of course, if its instant pop gratification that your after, i agree the Street new album is rubbish and i would probably go and buy the new McFly album, but then you probably already have that......

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the negatives   May 3, 2006

I read all your reviews before beuying this album and im glad i ignored the majority because this album is classic Streets. The lyrics actually mean something. There were classic lines in the other albums, like "So lets all out on our classics and have a little dance, shall we?". But it meant nothing. This album is real. br / br /1) Prangin out - 4/5...this has grown on me a lot! Hard to tell how much of it is true, but still quality br / br /2) War of the sexes - 5.5...couldn't stand this at first, but lyrically superb "Did you know, cigarette lighters were invented before matches"...typical Skinner humour br / br /3) Hardest Way to Make an Easy Loving - 4/5...the title track doesn't disapoint. If your not whistling this tune within a day of hearing it i'll my hat (its made of toast). br / br /4) All goes out the windo - 5/5...probably this albums version of dry your eyes mate? But not as sad, more advisory. Lyrically sensational. br / br /5) Momento Mori - 3/5...probably my least favourite song on the album, but still works br / br /6) Can't con an honest John - 4/4...pure brillaince, lyrcially and as a story, Skinner shows his genius again. br / br /7) When you wasn't famour - 5/5...you all know the lead track, i think its brilliany br / br /8) Never Went to church - 5/5...touching, very very good br / br /9) Hotel Expressionism - 5/5 Really grown on me, very funny br / br /10) Two nations - 5/5...doesnt really flow and is nt cohesive but works strangely well. br / br /11) Fake streets hats - 2/5...i cant really work out what this song is about. Well i can, but it doesnt seem right for the song. However, and interesting attempt at trying something different, and the only weak track on the album br / br /

5 out of 5 stars Quality...   April 17, 2006

First of all it needs to be said that i've been a fan of the streets from the very beginning. br / br /this record fulfilled more or less everything if wished for. It's plain to see that Mike Skinner made progress in both writing lyrics and stating his point. br / br /This record holds a couple of surpirses for the listener. On the one hand you encounter once again Mike's funny and sarcastic character trait, see "When you wasn't famous" and "The hardest way...". Besides that, the listener gets a clear impression of what's going on inside the artist. Difficult and private topics were couched into rhymes and are to be heard on "Never went to church" and even in the also funny, albeit a bit cheesy, "All goes out the window". You also won't miss out on the rhyme-pumping side of the artist when you listen to the track "memento mori". br / br /This record contains good laughs, songs which invite to contemplate and think thoroughly, and also the renowned STREETS old-school style. br / br /All the people, who only find criticism for this record, should ask themselves if it is not an artist's right to grow up and try new things.

I don't usually write reviews either, and have to admit that I agreed with the first reviewer on first listen of the album. The thing with the last two is that they captured me instantly. This isn't as instant. br / br /Thing is though, Mike is being true to himself. He obviously has a new viewpoint on life and writes about his experiences. There's only so much he can say about being a geezer and he's already said it. And this is...he's not a geezer anymore in my opinion. So the content of his songs is going to suffer but then again, it's something new to write about. br / br /Although it's his worst, the beats are still inventive, his flow is great and its Mike doing what he does best....being Mike.

5 out of 5 stars Better than 'A grand don't come for free'!   April 16, 2006

The reviewer at the top of the page seems to have missed the point of Mike Skinner lyrics somewhat. br / br /He is still telling the listening his truths, its just that his world has moved on from the days of the last album. If he was to rehash the same stories of 2 years ago he would really be selling out. By the way, the lyrics to 'Two Nations' have got nothing to do with the streets success rate in the US, it was originally a tune to go on the Biggie duets album and its about the relationship between the USA and the UK musically. br / br /The beats on this album are superb, much more urgency than the last album and more in relation to the debut release. It has a much more party/club vibe than 'a grand don't come for free'. There are some interesting vocal tricks going on as well! br / br /Some people may need a few listens to get into the album but its well worth the effort!
