Amazon.co.uk Review In 2006, Danger Mouse is King Midas of the music world. He has an uncanny knack for creating jagged, dense, frenzied beats and odd, eerie, vivid soundscapes that never compromise the music's natural flow. Meanwhile, rapper and singer Cee-Lo, a veteran of Atlanta's Dirty South scene, has never been one to be constrained by hip-hop conventions, and is a willing partner in adventure. The result is an intrepid psychedelic blend of pop, hip-hop, soul, and rock that consistently challenges and delights. It's no wonder that "Crazy," with its modest riff, irresistible hook, and disarming opening line ("I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind") became a worldwide Internet sensation a full six months before the official release of iSt. Elsewhere/i. But that relatively simple soul-pop gem is the tamest track on this wide-ranging, often dark and introspective collaboration. (In fact, the duo considers Gnarls Barkley to be a wholly new creation, as opposed to a collaboration of existing artists.) "Everybody is somebody, but nobody wants to be themselves," Cee-Lo croons on "Who Cares?" He and Danger Mouse try very hard not to be their old selves as they creatively and confidently break down boundaries, but the brilliant cores of their musical personae--Cee-Lo's eccentric spiritual soul man and Danger's bold sonic explorer--remain. --iMarc Greilsamer/i

Pure Greatness. May 2, 2006 W. Baker (Dorset, Angleterre) 22 out of 24 found this review helpful
This album truly is something special. The originality of the music, the silky combinations of rap and gospel singing, backed by a marvellous orchestra of all manner of instruments.
br /
br /From the high tempo songs such as 'Transformer' and 'Go Go Gadget Gospel' to the smooth, RB styled 'On-line' and 'St Elsewhere' there is at least one song for everyone. Even if you do buy it for that one song, (the hit single 'crazy' for example), it is still a worthy investment.
br /
br /Its one of those albums that just has to be played loud, not to annoy everyone else, but to share its brilliance with the world! Each and every song (superbly) mixes dance club 'chic' bass and synthesised rhythms with earthy beats and that unique singing voice.
br /
br /This album has no peers, behold a new music genre!
br /There truly is only one Gnarls Barley.

Not sure why this album has had such poor reviews from other Amazon buyers. I think this album is absolutely awesome. Some very punchy tunes with some interesting lyrics and very varied types. Perhaps people were expecting some middle of the range album. However, I really like the whole album and find that it flows really well. Some very funky tunes with a definite hint of hip-hop in there. If your wanting something that has some character and colour the this is deifinitely for you.
My album of the year so far.... June 18, 2006 A critic 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I am hugely impressed by this album. Cee-lo's voice is immense - it's worth buying the album just to enjoy it!
br /
br /But this is just one aspect which makes the album great. Dangermouse's work is great too - great samples, music and production. The two artists combined have made a modern soul masterpiece...hats off to them both!
br /
br /And the album also manages to be both musically and lyrically amusing! Like other reviewers have written; try and keep still whilst listening to this album. It's impossible! There are well deserved swipes at those dreary sorts that embrace anything remotely foreign and mystical to enliven their own bland lives (Feng Shui) and the misery of real-life-substitute websites such as Myspace (On-line).
br /
br /If you are a fan of artists such as NERD/Pharell, Outkast, Curtis Mayfield or any kinda soul, hip-hop, funk etc...you will love this album. The standout tracks for me are St Elsewhere, Feng Shui, Just A Thought, Storm Coming and of course Crazy!
br /
br /I am lucky enough to be going to the o2 wireless gig in Hyde Park on Friday and will see Gnarls live...I am very much looking forward to seeing them!
Get obsessed with this! July 5, 2006 TeakLipstickFiend (France) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I can't remember the last time I liked a whole album this much. I've been playing it over and over since I bought it and it grows on me more and more. It's an interesting mix of humour, passion, melancholy, depression, sex, and insanity. The vocals are gorgeous (both lead and backing) and each song has something to offer the soul and/or mind and/or body. Some took time to grow on me, but grow on me they did. Favourites are: Go Go Gadget Gospel, Crazy (of course), Smiley Faces, Just a Thought, Storm Coming and the incredibly sexy Last Dance. And after seeing Gnarls Barkley in concert the other night, I love this even more. Think, Dance, Enjoy!
If you like fluffy music, prob not best album 4 u June 14, 2006 Flash (UK) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I was scared listening to this album, many people were saying it was rubbish.
br /It isn't. If you like music in the style of Britney Spears, you prob won't like it, if you are into Robbie Williams, you prob won't like it either, ie if you are into easy cheap tunes like most crap on the radio today, you probably won't like it. This is a more classic Soul type album. If you've never really learned about Curtis Mayfield, you won't get this album.
br /
br /It's fun, funky and crazy, weird. My type of music. I like music that messes with your head a little. Something I can chew and get nourishment not cotton candy fluff pop that shuts my brain down. Some people like cotton candy, me, it makes my tummy ache after a bite.
br /
br /Smiley Faces, St Elsewhere, Gone Daddy Gone feels a bit rock, I love Just a Thought, I like all of them. I'm a bit dubious about Feng Shui and Boogie Monster, they probably just need to grow on me a bit more. The Last time reminds me of Seal for some reason.
br /
br /I get a 70's funk/soul vibe in the album with a 21st century twist.
br /If you are into Curtis Mayfield type music, or Parliament Funkadelic, with a dash of that Gorillaz darkness, I'm sure you'll like it.
br /Like I said, cotton candy type music fans stay away. Let us enjoy our albums in peace.
