Amazon.co.uk Review
The Roots aren't the only hip-hop group to build their sound around live instrumentation. Yet this Upstate New York quartet doesn't sound much like Philly's finest. Further, iAs Cruel as School Children/i is more radio-ready than previous efforts, especially "Cupid's Chokehold," which appropriates Supertramp's "Breakfast in America" to fine effect, i.e. "Take a look at my girlfriend / She's the only one I got." (A different mix appears on iThe Papercut Chronicles/i.) Not many indie-pop artists can freestyle, though, as frontman Travis McCoy proves on "Sloppy Love Jingle, Pts. 1-3," a trio of a cappella raps. Aside from dividing these tracks into "periods," "study halls," and the like, in fitting with the high school theme, McCoy's narratives touch on teachers, cheerleaders, and lunch room chatter. Guests include William Beckett (The Academy Is...) on "7 Weeks" and Speech (Arrested Development) on "Biter's Block." iCruel as School Children/i was co-produced by Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy) and released by band mate Pete Wentz's Decaydance imprint. Stump, who pops up in the "Cupid" video, also provides programming and backing vocals. i--Kathleen C. Fennessy/i

If you liked the papercut chronicals then I think you will love this record as in my opinion it is a much better record all round.Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy returns to feature on the track "Clothes Off" which is way better than their first duet! "New Friend Request" is probably my fave song off the album I love the fact that they have wrote a song about myspace! what put the icing on the cake for me was the shout out to I Am The Avalance on the last track. my advice is go buy this record its amazing

5 out of 5 stars amazing album...   July 27, 2006

this album is more of a party album then GCH's first title. with songs such as clothes off. the lyrics are just as good but a little bit different. travis does songs where its just him going accapella which are tight he did it live when i saw them. the album is one of the best albums of this year so far. GCH are gonna get big from this. They are still just angry at all the people that make the same music as everyone else. its worth a purchase definately.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite top of the class just yet.   October 4, 2006

A good album from a band who are just starting to get a bit more attention over here in the UK. I'm undecided as to whether it's a step up from their debut, "Papercut Chronicles" but all the same it's delightful to hear something a bit more different. For that alone it's worth checking out one or two songs to see if they do appeal to you. br / br /My personal recommendations from this album would be "On My Own Time (Write On!)" and "New Friend Request". If you're just getting into them as well then it's well worth going back to their debut album and hearing "Taxi Driver" and trying to count how many bands are mentioned. br / br /If you're into your "alternative" music but getting a bit tired of the traditional current stream of similiar bands then Gym Class Heroes could well be the band your ears have been longing for.

Bought it mainly for Cupid's Chokehold and pictures of Travis in the booklet (of which, be warned, there is only one - apart from a cartoon) but found it to be on the whole a very satisfactory album! I'm not usually a big fan of hip hop either, but the fact that there are proper guitars being played, the great lyrics, Travis' flawless style, and the revoltingly catchy tunes make this a wonderful album.
