Amazon.co.uk Review
Razorlight's eponymous sophomore release doesn't so much reinvent the freewheeling sensibilities of their '04 debut iUp All Night/i as hone them into a more willfully focused pop whole, a mindset that immediately evinces itself on the inviting, Boomtown Rats-meets-INXS-flavored opener "In the Morning." The growing confidence of songwriter/vocalist Johnny Borrell is almost palpable as he expands the band's horizons to include the '50s-rooted influences of "Before I Fall to Pieces" and the Dion-esque "Who Needs Love," the Chrissie Hynde-bred tension of "Hold On" and the sonic fervor of early U2 on "Pop Song 2006." Gratifyingly, that tack has also pushed the rest of the band - especially guitarist Bjorn Agren - towards honing their chops in service of a tighter, yet still playful sound. It may be too easy for seasoned ears to deconstruct the influences here, but by the time this taut, economic collection closes on the high note of the melodramatic "Los Angeles Waltz" even the cynics should be won over. i--Jerry McCulley/i

I love this album even though it's not as diverse as the debut. The guitars, lyrics and vocals compliment like any good rock album should - wind that car window right down and pump up the volume

Never one to run out and buy an album purely on popular opinion, it was with some caution that I picked up Razorlight's self titled album. In the two weeks since I bought it, the album has been a regular feature in my CD-player and on my PC and has left me with no regrets for taking a chance on it. br / br /Right from the first track, `In the Morning', `Razorlight' proves to be an album of excellent quality with tracks like `Who Needs Love', `America', `Can't Stop This Feeling I Got' and the finale `Los Angeles Waltz' keeping the listener's ears peaked. And that's taking nothing from the other five tracks that are definitely worth praise of their own. br / br /If I can have one criticism of the album it would be its thirty-five minute length. However, the track line-up more than makes up for the shortness of the album and will give you thirty-five minutes of listening pleasure. br / br /Razorlight's `Razorlight' is an album I'd highly recommend to anyone who takes their music collection seriously. Length aside, it is an album of exceptional quality and an example of popular opinion backing a real winner.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff!   January 29, 2007

More mainstream and radio friendly? Yes, but not in a bad way. Admittedly, the songs here are less spiky and urgent than those on Up All Night, but what they lose in vigour, they more than make up for with the sheer quality of the tunes on show here. Every song here could conceivably be released as a single (and, honestly, how many albums can you say that about?). People have also complained about the relatively short length of the album, but hey, sometimes exactly what you want is a short, sharp dose of perfectly formed, singalong, pop songs, which is exactly what this is. You'll have heard the singles by now - if you like them, you'll like the rest of the album. If you didn't, then you won't (but then you probably knew that already, right?). All in all then, a brilliant album. Get it, or miss out!

5 out of 5 stars Why The Negative Reviews!?   August 17, 2006

Let's get something straight before I begin this review, I'm no Razorlight fanboy. I thought 'Up All Night' (their debut album) was an album that was just about an average effort, they had personality, whopping ego's and a good energy coming from their songs, but I thought they were to be yet another band to appear, then vanish almost as quickly. But I am glad to say that they have proved me more than just wrong.... br / br /The first track 'In The Morning' comes on, it's as catchy as anything and has a faint sense of 'Up All Night' in its sound, but is miles better than anything off of that album and shows us the sound they were heading toward with the single 'somewhere Else', what your hearing is the sound of a band that have found their own musical style and have perfected it!! br / br /Second song, 'Who Needs Love?' is a fantastic, happy, bouncy tune that you just have to sing along to and is perfect radio Pop/rock, a completely inoffensive song that is as modern in its sound as it is old fashioned. 'Hold On' follows, again simply sublime, music hasn't sounded this toe-tappingly great in ages and it is refreshing and original. br / br /The next song 'America' retains classic Razorlight sound, but travels into new territory musically, a more emotional song, that is superb and even comes complete with o-oo-ooo-ooooo's, I would say it's a standout track but the whole album is a standout rarity. Then we have 'Before I Fall To Pieces', it's hard to say what this track does differently to the last four, they have a winning formula, why change it!? Just apply all the above complements! br /Then we have my favourite track, 'I Can't Stop This Feeling I've Got', it is just.......ahhhhh....I can't explain, you will know after you hear it, but what does standout is the arrangement of the instruments and the order they are played, I can see them now, wanting to dominate the music industry and trying out different methods until they reach musical paradise!! br / br /'Pop Song 2006' lasts little over 2mins and 40secs and is another brilliant track, you would have to really nitpick to find fault here. br / br /'Kirby's House' is a great and simple little track and the fine rhythm of the song is carried over by the tone of Johnny Borrell's vocals, this works fantastically well and is yet more proof (if needed) that this band has evolved tenfold! br / br /Then we have the last two tracks, 'Back To The Start' (another personal favourite) which retains the bouncy energy of 'Up All Night' but this time amounts to a song rather than just gleeful noise and 'Los Angeles Waltz' which is a song with lyrics to reflect upon and a perfect end to a stunning album, it has the most simple of Choruses but one which works better than it should. I do feel though, that the expletive wasn't needed and feels slightly out of place on this otherwise sweet sounding bunch of hits. br / br /So there you have it and clocking in at about 35mins it proves that sometimes, less is more. We have a band which have stunned me and probably many others, I don't know if this is a 'grower' or not, as it grabbed me instantly and has refused to let go ever since. Every track could be a possible single and every track amazes. The fact that something this simple has caught so many imaginations, there are surely bands kicking themselves that they hadn't done it first. Certainly one of the best albums of the year and I am sure THE best to some people, but, the question is, can they do it again??! br /For now, take a chance and enjoy this masterpiece!!

5 out of 5 stars Indie? What are you on?   June 16, 2007

More like pop rock. This is, unfortunately, as dissapointing as it is overated. After the exciting and original "Up All Night" I would have expected a better follow up. Dont get me wrong, its entertaining, but not brilliant. Dont be fooled by the appraisals, the reviews written by people who only heard "America", which by the way is no more than an aimless riff with a poorly constructed and sung chorus and meaningless lyrics. This is mediocre, and the mainstream's blindness is proved by the acclaim it has aroused. People, please get your act togther and actually listen to the music and stop praising Mediocrity when it calls itself Genius. Johnny Borrel is a derivatve songwriter with a Bob Dylan complex. Oh and by the way, the very next person who calls them "indie" gets a slap (that includes you NME)and a copy of "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel. Indie means indipendant, and any band with a team of PR men behind them dont deserve the title.
