Amazon.co.uk Review
It's flatly unfair that the Gossip aren't a massive success, a rocknroll giant slayer, especially as they unleash another 10-song, 30-minute zinger like iStanding in the Way of Control./i Singer Beth Ditto's boundless, whether shouting out the title song's chorus or feather-dusting the lyric on Meg White-sounding album closer, "Dark Lines." The band rocks with an unerring simplicity, a leanness that writhes. The big-beat, hop-along (and sing-along) "Listen Up," is the centerpiece here, a stripped focus on the Gossip's core conviction, that rhythm can rock like little else. The tune has Ditto holding court over a bluntly simple one-two beat, cautioning a crowd that by rights ought to be tenfold larger: "now gather round/now listen up," warning them that "some people talk way too much." As Ditto stuns, drummer Hannah Blilie's beat pounds, and Brace Paine's guitar lays down a simple law. Ignorance of that law is no excuse. I--Andrew Bartlett/i

Firstly re Tenpennys review: Why Beth Ditto's sexuality or size is relevant or worthy of comment here I fail to grasp. Don't allow the homophobic/sizeist prejudices of this person to put you off what is a very raw and energetic album. Get tapping on Amazon and find out for yourselves!

Absolutely loving this album!Bought it after seeing them on the Jonathan Ross show and thought it would entertain me in the car on a journey home. Could have been a shopping mistake but most certainly was not. Some tracks are a little bit similar, but still its def worth a listen. 'Listen up' and "Standing in the way of control" are ace. They are all ace.

5 out of 5 stars A great rock album. Don#x27;t judge it by its cover!   March 4, 2006

The cover of this album is very off putting, it looks like something a ten year old would make. Ignore that and give it a listen. This band has a great singer, a strong female voice. The music has a punky edge with a funky rhythm. Highly recommended.

I loved this album.Beth's voice is full of soul, sharp wit, compassion and dominating overtones. My faves are "Fire With Fire,"the first track and "Dark Lines",the last one.Gossip have just completed their second British tour and have made their mark now with this album.Have a listen to it,you'll admire this band for their positive stance. br /

5 out of 5 stars An example!   January 7, 2007

I notice that a lot of people seem to have a problem with Beth Ditto's weight - usually soap-dodging indie boys who weigh five stone, but they aren't relevant anyway. br / br /As it stands, the music is the most important thing, and judging by this effort, The Gossip don't have anything to worry about on that count. Beth Ditto's voice is one of the best in music at the moment: loud, distinctive, and yes - soulful. She has a voice which is reminiscent of a bygone era, when singers really projected their voices forth from deep within them. Her voice sometimes has a somewhat scratchy quality to it too, not in a bad way. This could be compared to the obvious singer of that mould, Janis Joplin, or even Robert Plant on certain songs. br / br /Many of the songs are very stripped down and low-key - the production values are very unpretentious. Good. Sometimes simplicity works, sometimes it doesn't, but here, it definitely works. Many of these songs have a somewhat retrogressive sound to them, but the fact that Beth Ditto's is a startling vocal presence transcends everything. br / br /Then there is the standout track, 'Standing In The Way Of Control', in which Beth sings one of her most fantastic vocals over an infectious, fast-paced guitar. It's the sort of song which livens up a dull night-out, always a good thing. br / br /Besides all of this, Beth really is a tremendous role model: a woman who gets by on talent rather than looks, and a generally feisty woman with lots of attitude. Long may she continue to annoy sad, out-of-date schmindie dullards.
