5 out of 5 stars Lost Classic!   December 8, 2007

From the pop of 'Why Can't I Be You' to the romantic 'Catch', through the dramatic 'Fight' this is the ultimate Cure album. There is not a bad track here, and shows the breadth of their talent. Great!

5 out of 5 stars At last, remastered with Hey You returned to the tracklist!   July 18, 2007

I'm so glad they've finally put 'Hey You' back on the tracklist. This was inexplicably missing on the original cd but present on the vinyl and cassette versions of the album. This for me was the last, great Cure work of art and for me it's right up there with Faith and Pornography as my 3 favourite Cure albums. The opening track is just phenomenal. A really long doom-laden guitar melody introduces Robert's most venomous vocals and lyrics to date. I absolutely love it, easily one of the best Cure tracks ever! This album is around 50% dark doomy Cure and the other half is more poppy but don't let that put you off because I think this album appeals more to the older 'true' Cure fans than those who like the newer poppier stuff post-Wish. Essential Cure!

3 out of 5 stars Too long at 74 minutes with too much filler   May 11, 2009
BS on parade
Certainly wipes the floor with the early Cure albums such as Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography. It has a much fuller, rockier sound than those as the skeletal minimalist approach has been relaxed for most songs. The drums are also not anywhere near as rigid as they used to be. And the vocals are much improved as they're higher in the mix and the lyrics are better. br / br / br /1. "The Kiss" - 6:17 (4 out of 5 stars) br /A straight forward rock song with heroic rock guitar playing a scratchy circular riff. br / br /2. "Catch" - 2:42 (3 stars) br /Melodic mid-tempo pop song. A violin seems to dominate. It's a bit so-so and feels like filler. br / br /3. "Torture" - 4:13 (3 stars) br /A dark Cure by numbers rock song. Unremarkable filler. br / br /4. "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" - 4:50 (4 stars) br /Interesting fussy arrangement - it's all about how the instruments fit together as they play little bits here and there. I think it's very much a musicianly track. Has a slight Eastern sound and an Arabian flute(?) at the end. br / br /5. "Why Can't I Be You?" - 3:11 (5 stars) br /On of their most famous songs. An up-beat pop song. br / br /6. "How Beautiful You Are" - 5:10 (5 stars) br /Very melodic rock song with a pop sound. The high note bass is very like New Order. Bass is the lead instrument. The keyboards sound like accordions(?) and I think there's a violin on the track as well. br / br /7. "The Snakepit" - 6:56 (2 stars) br /Lyrics are buried in lots of vocal overdubs. More of a mood piece than a song. Sounds okay but doesn't really add anything but padding to the album. Filler. br / br /8. "Hey You!" - 2:22 (4 stars) br /The bass is the lead instrument again on this propulsive rocker. There is also saxophone and a horn section on it. A fun track. The lyrics are pretty much just the title repeated a few times so it's more of an instrumental than a proper song. This track was deleted from the original CD version due to space restrictions. Admitting to liking this song probably outs me as not being a true Cure fan. br / br /9. "Just Like Heaven" - 3:30 (5 stars) br /A hit single and one of their most famous songs. Sounds very similar to New Order. br / br /10. "All I Want" - 5:18 (3 stars) br /Icy mid-tempo Cure by numbers rock song. br / br /11. "Hot Hot Hot!!!" - 3:32 (4 stars) br /An oddly funky and melodic pop song. br / br /12. "One More Time" - 4:29 (3 stars) br /Slow melodic love song with only about one verse of lyrics. I assume most people would consider this to be a highlight. I thought it was dull. br / br /13. "Like Cockatoos" - 3:38 (2 stars) br /Odd percussive sounds are the only interesting thing about this song. The lyrics are difficult to make out. br / br /14. "Icing Sugar" - 3:48 (1 star) br /Near instrumental with saxophone. Only one brief verse. Nothing interesting happens. Filler. br / br /15. "The Perfect Girl" - 2:34 (2 stars) br /Mid-tempo melodic pop song. Too short to make any impact. br / br /16. "A Thousand Hours" - 3:21 (1 star) br /Boring song with annoying, but brief, high pitched vocals. br / br /17. "Shiver and Shake" - 3:26 (3 stars) br /Loud rocker of no great distinction. br / br /18. "Fight" - 4:27 (3 stars) br /Decent song with the word "Fight" shouted out over and over. br / br / br /Tracks 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12 and 18 make for a much better 40 minute single album.

2 out of 5 stars Ghastly orgy of over-indulgence   June 4, 2008

This would have made an excellent EP. When Bob knocks out a good song it's really worth listening to. But truly great tracks such as 'How Beautiful You Are' and 'Just Like Heaven' drown in a horrible porridge of musical indulgence. There are simply too many bad tracks here. br / br /The good ones stand out gleaming like carrots in Saturday night pavement sick. But tricky to pick out without getting slime on your fingers. br / br /But now you can buy individual tracks as mp3 files so all you have do is find out is which are the good ones and which are the bad. Clue: There are 12 horrible tracks and five good ones. br / br / br / br / br / br /
