Amazon.co.uk Review
The debut album from St Albans quartet Enter Shikari is an impressive testament to one band's spirited self-reliance. Not only does ITake To The Skies/I touch down on Shikari's own homegrown label, Ambush Reality, this is the sort of unlikely soundclash - hardcore punk meets glowstick-waving rave - that millions said wouldn't work, but when done right, very clearly does. Not everyone will get it, of course - you can almost hear the generation gap yawning as "Stand Your Ground; This Is Ancient Land" kicks in - a mix of drum'n'bass snares, trance keyboards, and growled profanity that should leave the older rockers scratching their heads. But like Lostprophets before them, Enter Shikari are clearly something far more than a kiddie fad. The likes of "Mothership" and "Anything Can Happen In The Next Half Hour" tremor with the sort of earthquake breakdowns and thrash riffs moshpits were made for, and where synthesisers fire up, they do so with a remarkable cohesiveness, adding a surprising, euphoric counterpoint to the barked metal aggression. As with Lostprophets, time will tell if Enter Shikari have the anthems to become part of the metal big leagues, but ITake To The Skies/I is an impressive, energetic starting point. i--Louis Pattison/i

5 out of 5 stars Hertfordshire Hubris   May 4, 2008
The Wolf (uk)
6 out of 8 found this review helpful

Mrs Wolf has family in Hertfordshire. br /A Hatfield pack of uncertain pedigree. br / br /Following a recent sojurn there with Scatty and Grits (the cubs) br /she returned with a basketload of gifts, including 4 jars of her br /sister's homemade marmalade, an ebony framed sepia photograph br /of a once famous local woodcutter and a copy of Enter Shikari's new album br /'Take To The Skies', which I can only assume had been slipped in at the last moment br /by my somewhat wayward nephew Warren without his Mother's knowledge. br / br /(He knows that his favorite uncle is always up for a challenge!) br / br /To enjoy this entertainment from these redoubtable sons of St Albans br /you will either be : br / br /1)Young and wearing a Gio-Goi hoodie. br / br /2)From Hertfordshire. br / br /or: br / br /3)In possession of a robust sense of humour. br / br /The Wolf, for his part, hasn't had such a good laugh br /in a long-long time (he does not mean this in an unkind way). br / br /There is something both unnerving and very funny about the br /almost relentless, deadpan "sturm und drang" of this little epic. br / br /Fierce thrash-guitar riffs, portentious synthesiser intrusions and br /bucketloads of demonic shouting (just loving the shouty-shouty stuff). br /The whole thing driven along with energetic aplomb by drummer Master Rob. br / br /'Mothership', 'Anything Can Happen In The Next Half Hour', 'Labyrinth', br /'Return To Energiser' and the blistering 'No Sssweat' all compete to br /make our ears bleed in wholesome and good-natured fashion. br / br /There is some respite in the lyrical and more melodically refined 'Today Won't br /Go Down In History' and the uplifting anthem 'Adieu'. br / br /'OK, Time For Plan B' with it's rousing battle cries is unintentionally hillarious! br / br /In 'Jonny Sniper', however, this splendid little band would appear br /to have accidently created a very fine pop song. br / br /Scatty and Grits love it and have asked their mother to buy br /them matching hoodies on her next visit to the market. br / br /She is not amused ! br /

I managed to sneak a copy of this album from someone i know who owns a record store and didnt know quite what to expect, br / br /Split by short '90's trance and drum and bass interludes the album is a mix of Metal, Hardcore and rave music. However, to my suprise it is done in such a way that..... it actually works.....perfectly! br / br /This should appeal to the fans of all types of music, its utter crazy music, and fair play to the guys for setting up thier own record label aswell. br / br /I would recommend this 5/5 album to anyone open minded and with an ounce of taste.

5 out of 5 stars Everything Happens Within This Half Hour   March 16, 2007

No matter if you're a Q, Kerrang!, Mojo or NME reader, it will come as no suprise to you that Enter Shikari are going to be the screamo band of the year. They have risen from being a energetic, lean cult band performing at small venues and clubs - to a lively mammoth of a band playing sold-out tours all around the country. It's been three whole years, but this year Enter Shikari will take over the world of rock music. br / br /While having an early listen to their debut album, "Take It To The Skies," I was slightly reminded of the Klaxons' "Magick" mixed up with Bring Me The Horizon's "Count For Blessings" album. If you are unaware with both of those bands, Think: Techno electronica mixed up with heavy guitars. It really is superb stuff. br / br /The album obviously includes the recent singles "Sorry, You're Not A Winner" and the mighty "Anything Can Happen In The Next Half Hour," but it also features a fistful of songs many fans will be very aware of, their fantastic "Mothership" for instance. br / br /Having said that, "Take It To The Skies" features a lot of tracks that the band have kept secret until the release. One of them being "Today Won't Go Down In History," which is one of the highlights of the entire album. It takes singer Rou Reynolds's vocals to the maximum. br / br /But tracks like "Mothership" and "Return To Energiser" have been popular for years. Shikari hadn't released a single since last November, yet many of their songs were well-known by followers and fans of the band. br / br /"Return To Energiser" is a four minute masterpiece. "OK Time For Plan B" is a destructive monolith. "Jonny Sniper" is a mellow-sounding masterpiece. "Labyrith" steals the show, and "Mothership" is a mighty anthem about a man that gets captured by aliens. Genius. br / br /All though the high-pitched screams and blasting guitars may not be for everybody, Enter Shikari have defiantly made a name for themselves. I have not yet witnessed one of their live shows, but am attending a performance on the 27th of March. I simply cannot wait. But until then, I will be listening out for their number on the UK Albums Chart and hope for a high number. Enter Shikari have already become one of my favourite bands, and have given me different looks upon today's music. And this is only the beginning.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff   April 12, 2007

First, it's a good idea to start off by saying, music means different things to different people. When bands start doing cross-genre stuff, it makes things very tricky. br / br /I personally didn't like Enter Shikari's sound at first. It grew on me, a lot. (I love it now). I thought it sounded clashy, the vocals weren't very melodic when they try to be, and the genre is confusing to say the least. br / br /However, this band are trying something new, no one's perfect when they first start out. It's important not to go out and buy this album because you like only "electronica" or only"hardcore". You have to like both to appreciate it. br / br /People who listen to hardcore music will know that a lot of its sounds "dirty", rough, grimy (for lack of more accurate words) and well - hardcore! Those who don't know and realise this will think the vocals are frankly poor and talentless. Those who listen to electronica or dance will think a kid aged 10 could probably do a better job on the keyboard and synth. br / br /Okay getting to the point... I love it. It's up beat. The organisation of the tracks are great, with interludes between nearly all of their vocal tracks. The lyrics are simple yet meaningful. Nice use of screaming and gang vocals. br / br /Another point to remember! These guys are from Hertfordshire, they sound "common", they're supposed to. If you don't like the Estuary dialect/accent, you might have a problem with this album! I love it though! br / br /To wrap it up, this album has been getting mixed reviews, but it really does depend on what you're basing your opinion on! br / br /Best tracks: Anything Could Happen in the Next Half Hour, Johnny Snipper, Sorry You're Not a Winner.

5 out of 5 stars The saviours of UK metal   March 27, 2007

Forget Bullet For Your Valentine, Bring Me The Horizon or lostprophets - these guys really ARE the saviours of the UK scene in my eyes. I'm sure you've read the hype, and believe me - it's justified. This CD is unbelievable in every respect. And the fact that it's self released and recorded, shunning label intervention makes it even more astonishing!! If you haven't picked this up then DO - and support UK talent, and simultaneously discover your new favourite band, like i did. And go see them live!! I've caught a good few dates on their tours now, and they're fantastic. Buy this. Now.
