Amazon.co.uk Review The first clue to the sound of Avril Lavigne's third CD, iThe Best Damn Thing/i, comes in the form of her kickoff single, "Girlfriend," which is filled with singing, clapping, and cheerleader-style chanting. The song is quite a sonic contrast to her previous disc, iUnder My Skin/i, which was considered to be Lavigne's more mature follow-up to her 16 million-selling debut CD, iLet Go/i. Like that debut, iThe Best Damn Thing/i will be largely and deeply embraced by teenage girls, and is packed with songs that will create enthusiastic sing-alongs in concert. There are a handful of numbers that will appeal to a wider audience; "Innocence" and disc closer "Keep Holding On" would both fit perfectly in a Gray's Anatomy episode, while the sultry message and solid harmonies in "Hot" will appease ears of many ages. Lavigne's husband, Sum 41 frontman Deryk Whibley makes an appearance as producer and instrumentalist on a handful of tracks; their union, however, seems to have bred more than love. "I Don't Have to Try" and "Everything Back But You" both have a frenetic pace and chorus that is so eerily Sum-like that if they weren't married, a copyright lawsuit might ensue. That aside, the record oscillates between lyrically acerbic fare ("One of Those Girls," "I Can Do Better") and fluffy sugar-pop melodies ("Contagious," "The Best Damn Thing") delivering far more spunk rock than punk rock. i--Denise Sheppard/i

Simply Is The Best Damn Thing... July 14, 2007 A. Lucas (England) 17 out of 20 found this review helpful
Girlfriend - Great lyrics and a fantastic start to the album. I promise that you will be singing along to this song within minutes. 9/10
br /
br /I Can Do Better - Possibly the worst song on the album, sounds a lot like Girlfriend. However the song is still catchy and isn't one that you need to skip through. 7/10
br /
br /Runaway - Reminds me a lot of the old Avril songs, great chorus and verses. 10/10
br /
br /The Best Damn Thing - I love the way the lyrics just flow in this song and how Avril sings about how happy she and how her "Cinderella story scene" has come true. 10/10
br /
br /When You're Gone - The most beautiful song i've heard in a long time, the lyrics are really truthful and are sung perfectly. MUST HEAR! 10/10
br /
br /Everything Back But You - Good upbeat song which follows perfectly lifting the album after When You're Gone. 8/10
br /
br /Hot - Hailed as one of the greatest songs on the album, I beg to differ there are much better songs on this album. However it is still brilliant :D 9/10
br /
br /Innocence - Made me cry! 10/10
br /
br /I Don't Have To Try - Another fantastic song that keeps the album going from strength to strength. Lyrics are a bit poor compared to other songs but excellent nonetheless. 9/10
br /
br /One Of Those Girls - I love the verses on this song, really good hooks :D 9/10
br /
br /Contagious - My favourite song on the album, shame it isn't longer. 10/10
br /
br /Keep Holding On - This song brings a nice clean ending to the album and finishes perfectly. 9/10
Pom Pom Power ! April 21, 2008 The Wolf (uk) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Mrs. Wolf watches me from the kitchen. As she stands by the
br /oven basting the piglet I can see that she is wearing what I
br /have come to call her "Turn-It-Down" face...
br /
br /...and then the sting in the tale (tail?) :
br /
br /"Aren't You A Bit OLD To Be Listening To This ?"
br /
br /Well crikey ! ...erm, probably Yes but then again categorically NO !
br /
br /AND YET !...How, after this, will I be able I look at myself
br /squarely in the mirror, having recently written less than loving
br /reviews for both Mr Oldfield's and Mr Reznor's most recent releases
br /and even begin to hope that my humble opinion might continue
br /to contain even the smallest grain of credibility ?
br /
br /Well...it's like this - I love Miss Lavigne's new album
br /and I don't give a hoot who knows it !
br /
br /2004's 'Under My Skin', with it's black and white photography
br /and somewhat darker sound than her dizzy 2002 debut 'Let Go',
br /seemed to be saying "OK People Time To Take Me Seriously".
br /
br /No harm in that ... It was a damn fine second album.
br /
br /With 'The Best Damn Thing' we discover a raucous return
br /to the simple, explosive pink/punk/pop formula at which she excels.
br /
br /12 marvelously mindless tracks !
br /Simple - Yes; Formulaic - Yes; Cliched - Yes ...
br /...but with enough energy to keep a major league baseball team in
br /hotdogs, beer and cheerleaders for at least two seasons !
br /
br /Brevity and economy work to Ms Lavigne's advanatage in every way.
br /'I Can Do Better' and the almost Mockney 'Everything Back But You'
br /really thrash along.
br /'Girlfriend' and 'The Best Damn Thing' have the kind of killer hooks
br /that always make me laugh out loud and (blush) sing along.
br /
br /"Let Me Hear You Say Hey Hey Hey !"
br /"Hey! Hey! Hey!"
br /"Alright ! Now Let Me Hear You Say Hey Hey Ho !"
br /"Hey! Hey! Ho!"
br /
br /( Pom Poms Optional! )
br /
br /Nothing lasts long enough for boredom ever to rear it's ugly head.
br /The perfect sountrack for an X Box, attention-deficit generation.
br /
br /The pace slows down a tad for 3 tracks: 'When You're Gone',
br /'Innocence' and 'Keep Holding On'; all wave-your-lighter-in-the-air
br /power ballads and nothing wrong with that either.
br /( I mean - If 'Innocence' made "Lobsterboy" cry then it's
br /sure as hell good enough for me too !)
br /
br /Scatty and Grits (the cubs) have just come in from school
br /and are already dancing about with wild abandon.
br /
br /They usually take my side in moments like this.
br /
br /Mrs Wolf is still frowning so I guess that's all three
br /of us in the doghouse.
br /
br /... but that roasting piglet is beginning to smell really good !

different but it works June 30, 2007 Family (Switzerland) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
I LOVE this album. Yes it's much different from Under My Skin and Let Go, but everyone changes and I think this style works for Avril. The songs are catchy and she sings them well, my little brother knows half the words now!
br /
br /1. Girlfriend - Just a fun song, loud and poppy 10/10
br /
br /2. I Can Do Better - Took a while to get into because of the pre-chorus bit which doesn't fit in, but very catchy 10/10
br /
br /3. Runaway - One of my favourite songs on the album, a bit more meaningful and a very soulful chorus that just hooks you 10/10
br /
br /4. The Best Damn Thing - The verses don't seem to fit with the chorus, sounds a bit pushed sometimes 9.5/10
br /
br /5. When You're Gone - Not the best choice for a single, in some parts it sounds like she's rushing the word to fit the chorus in 9/10
br /
br /6. Everything Back But You - Again took a while to get into, the lyrics are strange and some parts don't seem to fit together 9/10
br /
br /7. Hot - A bit provocative, not the best 8/10
br /
br /8. Innocence - Meaningful, soulfully sung, one of the best songs 10/10
br /
br /9. I Don't Have To Try - Slightly odd lyrics at the beginning, gets much better though and is quite clubby 10/10
br /
br /10. One Of Those Girls - Probably the poppiest on the album, Avril's voice can get a little too sweet but still great 10/10
br /
br /11. Contagious - Way too short, could have been developed so much more! 9/10, because of the length
br /
br /12. Keep Holding On - Beautiful and very moving, easily high above the rest 11/10

Avril is back! and better then ever! November 9, 2007 NAR (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
i loved avrils first two albums "Let Go" and "Under My Skin" but this is even better. I wouldn't say it is "The Best Damn Thing" but its still amazing and well worth buying! The songs are very catchy and fun to listen to. My favourite songs are Runaway,Innocence,When Your Gone and Girlfriend but there all very good. I would say this album is mainly aimed at teenagers which is great! An absolutely well worth buying album!
fantastic December 20, 2007 Maria Savva (London) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this album because I really liked the single 'When You're Gone' and I'd heard 'Girlfriend' which is really catchy. I wasn't disappointed. I have the CD on my car stereo constantly now! It's great! I especially love 'Innocence' which is a haunting ballad, and I listen to it over and over without getting bored! Fantastic!! I think all the songs are catchy - Avril just keeps getting better.
